The blot on the landscape: Fred Williams and Australian art history Keith Broadfoot There is a blot on the Australian landscape. It has been there for a long time, but its existence only really became apparent with a defining shift in Australian art historiography which occurred with Bernard Smith’s 1980 Boyer Lecture series, The Spectre of Truganini. Seeing the exclusion of an Aboriginal presence in Australian art through the ideas of Sigmund Freud, Smith proposed in his pivotal text that the history of Australian art was a history of repression. After Smith, contemporary art historian Ian McLean has developed the most detailed account of the history of Australian art according to this methodology. This essay examines the work of the modern Australian artist Fred Williams in relation to both Smith and McLean’s understanding of the history of Australian art but to expand on their work I argue that, rather than Freud alone, it is Jacques Lacan’s refiguring of Freud that offers us the most insight into Williams’s work. Further, insofar as I argue that the history of Australian art is the very subject matter of Williams’s work, his work stands in for a wider project, the writing of a history of Australian art according to Lacan’s proposal of a foundational split between the eye and the gaze. But first, to that blot. From colonial melancholy to a modern uncanny In a brilliant observation, Ian McLean, in drawing attention to emigrant artist John Glover’s attempt to control the disorderly dispersion of gums across the hillsides in the background of some of his paintings, suggests that therein could be found the origin to the art of Fred Williams. -

The lavish and much anticipated opening of the magnificently re-sited National Gallery of Victoria was held on the brisk winter evening of Tuesday, 20 August that year. The new building on St Kilda Road – the first phase of the $20 million Victorian Arts Centre complex – boasted a collection valued over $25 million, with its most valuable paintings, including works by Rembrandt, Tiepolo and Cézanne, acquired through the magnanimous bequest of industrialist Alfred Felton. In the towering Great Hall, intended for State receptions and banquets, the multi- hued glass ceiling by the Melbourne artist Leonard French – one of the world’s largest pieces of suspended stained glass – shimmered with radiant flashes of brilliant colour. As Evan Williams reported in the Sydney Morning Herald the following day, ‘with a candle-lit banquet, special exhibitions and seminars, a symphony concert, a trumpet fanfare composed for the occasion, it is some 1 opening’. Aus$39.95. 978 0 642 33423 7 At his death in 1982 at the age of fifty-five, Fred Williams had firmly established himself as Australia’s leading artist, the one indisputably major talent in the generation that succeeded Sidney Nolan and Arthur Boyd. Both of them had placed a representative figure against the landscape, be it the outlaw Ned Kelly or the doomed explorers Robert Burke and William Wills (Nolan) or a desperate lover in pursuit of his white bride (Boyd) to create a mythic presence. The sun-drenched plain or the nocturnal bush became a theatre where the aspirations and agonies of the human condition could be acted out. Williams would change all that. Williams’s decisive turn to the landscape came in 1957 when he returned to Australia after five years in London. The shock of recognition was intense. From his first sight of the bush near Fremantle to settling back into Melbourne, he was determined to paint the landscape and, more specifically, the gum tree, then regarded as a hopelessly outdated subject. Williams was a Francophile, and Cézanne became an early and obvious guide. More significantly, Williams had seen an important survey of Georges Braque when in London. The latter’s Cubist landscapes of 1908–9 aided him in coming to grips with the featureless character of the Australian landscape. -

Photograph. University of Melbourne Archives. Art history’s history in Melbourne began with the appointment of Joseph Burke (1913-1992) to the Herald Chair of Fine Arts in 1946. Burke made a number of remarkable appointments with Ursula Hoff, Franz Phillip, and Bernard Smith to create the seminal department of art history in Australia. Burke’s real field of expertise was in the English eighteenth century. Like many intellectuals of the diaspora, he transposed his scholarship to a different society. This article is based on Burke’s correspondence with Daryl Lindsay and Kenneth Clark. Burke’s support for Australian artists is analysed, notably Hugh Ramsay, Russell Drysdale and Sidney Nolan. In my formation as a scholar I encountered Joe Burke at three crucial points in my life. Initially, at the age of sixteen, as a first year undergraduate at the University of Melbourne, I heard him lecture on subjects such as Tiepolo’s Banquet of Antony and Cleopatra.1 Joe Burke (Fig. 1) remains in my Originally published in MAJ Melbourne Art Journal No 8, 2005, 89-99. memory as a remarkable lecturer, only comparable with Anthony Blunt, who exerted a similar charismatic effect on his audience. He was fluent, witty, would walk up and down, dressed elegantly in a 1940s pin stripe suit, and somehow communicated that art history was a very special intellectual experience, one that I and many of my contemporaries felt compelled to dedicate our lives to pursuing. -

Monash University Collection Celebrating 60 Years 1961 Foundation Vice- Monash University officially opens to its first 347 students at Clayton. The inaugural Chancellor 1960– Vice-Chancellor Louis Matheson makes a ‘modest sum’ of £500 available annually for the 76, Sir James Adam acquisition of contemporary Australian art. The idea to commission murals and embellish Louis Matheson the buildings and grounds of the new campus with art is sparked by Dean of Science and Foundation Professor of Zoology and Comparative Physiology, Jock Marshall. Chair, Art Purchasing An Art Purchasing Committee forms comprising Professors Marshall, Donald Cochrane Committee 1961, (Dean of Economics and Politics), Dr Tim Ealey (Professor of Zoology) and student Professor Alan John representative Ken Gooding. Interestingly, the first acquisition to the Collection is not by (Jock) Marshall an Australian but by Spanish artist Pablo Picasso, Grey Jug with Engraved Face, 1954–61 (Dean of Science) (chosen by the Vice-Chancellor). Clifton Pugh’s Two Foxes, 1961, is the first work to be acquired based on Committee recommendations.
