After a lot of hard work over the last few years led by S/C Noel Diefendorf with lots of help from Paul Descalso, Bill Minehan and others, our galley has been given a gold star On The House by the Health Department. Good going guys! The landscaping is coming together on the Anchor plot. It’s gone from eyesore to a stunning entrance to the club property. This is due to the hard work of Bob Morey, John Likas, Bill Minehan, Lee Essayan and others. Bravo!

We're responsible for whatever wake our boats create. It Pittsburg - October 18 - 20 shouldn't be excessive or pose a hazard to others. Any vessel operating at idle-speed in a no-wake zone, must operate at Oakland Yacht Club - November 15 - 17 minimum speed to allow headway and steerage, yet creating little or no wake. If your vessel is creating a wake that breaks or generates white water or waves, you're going too fast. It's simply discourteous to create a wake in a no-wake zone; and, Sign up and you'll have fun! you're responsible for any property damage or bodily injury Fair winds, calm seas, and deep water! your wake may cause. So, slow down and observe your wake.

A long-time boater once said to me, "if something doesn't go wrong, you ain't boating' ". We should always expect failures; these usually happen at the worst possible time. Bruce Fairey, Rear Commodore Wires break, fuses blow, connections corrode, batteries fail, and on and on. We all depend on electronics; they tell us our speed, our position, our depth, what's fish are below, etc. But if these fail, the lowly compass can be counted on; it can give you proper directional orientation and, with it, a course can be set to navigate home or to safe harbor. Most people can read a compass and are able to follow a general heading. When used, it'll allow for quick and accurate reading of bearing and range and to determine a course. (Note: They do need some basic maintenance and should be calibrated with your electronics. Mounting should be where it won't be affected by electric or magnetic fields. And, they will have a deviation from a chart; it may be a degree or two or several; you'll have REMEMBER to figure this out.)

Line handling seems not being taught in a classroom or found THE MYC BAR IS OPEN ON in books. It's generally passed on by word of mouth, from person to person. In tying off, we tie the boat to the dock, SUMMER SATURDAYS not the the dock to the boat; try passing the eye of the line to and around the dock cleat and back to the boat to be cleated FROM NOON UNTIL 6 PM off; then you can adjust the line without leaving the boat. When heaving, first of all have a line of sufficient length; then, have the person catching extend their arms out; throw to their arms, not to or at their heads. In coiling line, you don't want twists; when bringing in a length, a finger turn of that length, on way or the other, can allow that loop to hang freely; a nicely hanging or coiled line tends not to tangle when used.

only $2500 (half off) and the sponsoring member gets a $100 MYC credit for each successful applicant. At this point we had hashed through and presented to Bob a final list of plants to purchase. You might have noticed the flag colors kept changing as we worked Landscaping through various ideas. Three weeks later the plants Committee arrived. Joe, this time, provided eight yards of topsoil to set the plants as they would not have thrived in that poor of an environment even with our professional grade watering system. Bob and a team of three of his employees spent ten hours planting all of the new arrivals. They too needed to borrow Bill’s jackhammer to dig the holes.

It was Bob Morey’s idea! Clive, Bill, and I finalized the placement of the emitters and completed the automation of the system. There are Lee, Bob and I were surveying the landscaping in a few odds and ends still to be attended to, but we are advance of Clean-Up day, and as we got around the materially done. Now that I know how much work is front, Bob represented that the area around the anchors involved in such an undertaking, I plan to avoid all such was really ugly and a real embarrassment to the Club. endeavors in the future. His offer was that he would buy the plants at wholesale and plant them if the club would cover the cost of the plants. Within minutes, the plan was hatched. After soliciting support from Clive Endress who drew up the plans (now I know what a landscape architect does) and Bill Minahen who has the tractor, we created a PowerPoint to pitch the idea to the club. Lee took it up with the Board of Directors and after much hemming and hawing, the Board granted our request for $3000.00 for a makeover.

It all seemed so cut and dried then. We solidified the plan, and Bill went to work grading that front area with his tractor. The ground was mostly rock, and without Bill and his tractor the project would have failed. Seriously failed! We sent out a request for help to Joe Garbarino to provide debris boxes so that we could get rid of some of the larger rocks. He provided, we filled, and he removed three large debris boxes of rocks, stumps, tennis balls, and whatever. The Committee

Next, Clive laid out the watering system. Without his expertise and perseverance we would have been lost. Frankly, I did not even understand this as a really critical element of the plan. Fortunately, we had him on the team, and he led us to build a professional grade John Likas, Chair system. This deployment, however, turned out to be a major production as we had to borrow Bill’s jackhammer to dig the trenches for the system as the ground was still so rocky. After the trenching, which was hellish, the laying out, piecing together, and gluing of the components was almost fun…. hot working though. The Landscaping Project

John did not appear in the pictures I took when the landscaping was being added (and Bill was eating doughnuts), but the additional picture shows him at a previous MYC Work Day. I think that was his first mistake showing that he could be part of a landscaping work day, and Commodore Sales used that as blackmail to get John to agree to be Chair. It is an honor to be part of this dynamic hard working team...Chair John Likas, Bill Minahen, Bob Morey, and Clive Endress. Both Clive and I have served as Chairs of Landscaping, but it took this year's team (as they are called) to get our front area looking like someone really lives here. Thanks also to Joe Garbarino for contributing top soil so our new plants will thrive. Now we need another Club Work Day to get the drive into the grounds looking as good as the Anchor Area...any suggestions for a date?????

Noel Diefendorf, Staff Commodore In subsequent one boat racing, ETNZ set a speed record of 44.15 kts or 50.8 mph!

ETNZ won again over Luna Rossa on July 21 in spite of losing their jib, and found that the 72s can be downwind without a jib, but have difficulty tacking and are not optimized for foiling without the headsail.

Our typical race day routine is as follows:

0900 -- Arrival at ACRM's Pier 19 Complex - boat prep, checking out of radiios, flags, lunches, etc.

1000--On-the-water Operations Meeting (photo below) led by Professional Race Officer John Craig -- outlining the day's scheduled event, wind and tide conditions, and any resulting changes in course layout.

1030 Dock out --- Departure from Pier 19 1/2, fuel-up City Yachts - Gashouse Cove.

1100 --Course set and Special Local Regulation (SLR) lock-down preventing non-race spectators, excepting commercial and VIP craft, from accessing the course.

1115-- Access - ORACLE Racing conducting two boat testing on the course.

1215-- Race START.

1300-- Race FINISH

AC Course Marshal's 1330-- Back at Dock, wash down boats, check in radios, On-the Water Perspective flags, debrief. 1400-- Depart Pier 19 1/2. The America's Cup on-the-water activities got off to a slow start in July. The July 5th Parade was foggy and cold, and the individual boat Time Trials scheduled for that day, which could have been really exciting, were cancelled.

Then we had a series of "one boat" racing days since Artemis Racing's second AC 72 was not expected to be launched until July 29th. On air broadcast commentators Tucker Thompson and Andy Green gave it their best, but it is pretty difficult to create excitement when there is no competition. So on July 14th the video broadcast of "one boat" racing ceased.

The only racing that ensued was between ETNZ and Luna Rossa. The Kiwis were much more experienced and quicker in their boat handling maneuvers, winning their first race by over 5 minutes.

In this first competition, ETNZ was 3 kts faster downwind, 1 kt faster upwind, and 8 seconds faster through the tacks - foiling at 29, 28 and 29 kts through the maneuvers.

The day can vary with the scheduled activities. On July 20-21 we supported the Kites and Big Cats Racing event off of StFYC, immediately following the Louis Vuitton Round Robin races. We ended up “rescuing” two kiters who were flailing around in the heavy wind and tide.

The Louis Vuitton Semi-Finals begin August 6th and ARTEMIS Racing is expected to be on the course. The Race Schedule is available at this link. http:// www.americascup.com/en/schedules/races

We expect the spectator fleet to grow as the semi-finals and finals ensue. But frankly the best way to view the event is to watch the fantastic helicopter shots on NBC Sports or YouTube broadcast on a big screen.

But if you are out on The Bay and see us coming at you at 35+ kts (below), we encourage you to proceed expeditiously off of the course.

After 16 days on the water, S/C Ron Witzel was presented with new Puma AC Offshore Weather Gear. He wears his pfd underneath!

S/C Ron Witzel - Course Marshal #4 Tony F Annual Salmon Derby and Great Fish Feed Sunday August 18, 2013

Special notice to all members, including non-fishing and/or non-boating members, Associates, Tennis Members, All of the Club:

You are very welcome! Come and be part of the fun!

There is nothing better than fresh-caught wild King Salmon, and the Great Fish Feed is only $20/head.

Competing boats will donate fresh salmon to the club, and there is nothing in this whole world better than fresh-caught wild salmon. Book soon, because this is surely the best night of the year. Also we need to know how many are coming for catering purposes, and to let me whip the competitors to produce enough salmon for a outstanding night! (we’ve never failed yet).

Great Boat Auction is Friday, AUG 16 Don’t forget the fun at the traditional Great Boat Auction, which will be held after dinner on Friday, August 16. Club members and skippers dumb enough to be still up drinking will bid for each boat in the event. There are a few club members who are known to be extreme bidders – if they turn up the bidding will get wild, and then the fun really starts.

5% of the bids go to “the house” and the remainder is split 65% for the winning boat, 35% to the second boat. The winning boat is determined by a formula based on the size of the fish caught and the number of rods fished.

And fishermen, get your entries in! $25 per participant. Any number of participants per boat. There is no disadvantage to having a lot of people on the boat, as the auction result is based on the number of rods fished, not the number of participants. Send the club office your Boat name, skipper name, number of participants and number of rods to be fished. Don’t send money – the club will bill you later.

Prizes: 60% of the entry fees will be allocated to prize money. 65% of the prize money for the largest salmon and 35% for the second largest salmon. The rest of the entry fees goes towards costs, including the ever-popular souvenir caps which are given to each entrant. Everybody wins in the MYC Salmon Derby.
