A letter from Bishop Christopher

I imagine that many of you reading this letter are preparing to take a summer holiday. Whether you're going away or staying at home, the summer months are often a time when we're able to change gear and slow down a little. They are an opportunity for some rest and relaxation. It's easy to fall into the trap of thinking that we are only doing God's work if we are busy. It is true that our faith must be expressed in action, but should only ever be part of the story. That action must be informed by prayer and reflection. The gospels tell us that Jesus often got into a boat and took himself away from the crowds after busy times, so that he could spend time alone with God. Jesus knew how important it was to make the time to do that. When we live at a busy pace, we need rest in order for our bodies to recharge and feel rejuvenated. But there's more to it than that. Finding time to rest is essential for a life that is balanced and healthy, emotionally and spiritually as well as physically. Rest gives us time to recalibrate, to reflect and to pray, to ask ourselves, 'Am doing the things God wants me to do in my life?' Reflecting on that question might lead us to think about doing things differently, refocusing our lives so they are once again in tune with what God is asking us to do. So wherever you may be this summer, I encourage you to find some time simply to rest in the presence of God. May you be blessed in your rest and relaxation, and in all that you do in God's name.

Bishop Christopher

5 CHANGE AND GROW;- This is a time of endings and beginnings for us as a group of friends as we try to be true to our God in this amazingly diverse and beautiful Deanery of Bolingbroke. Firstly we must celebrate (as our Salvationist friends would put it) the Promotion to Glory of David James (72yrs born 30th May 1942 - died 03/06/14). David moved into the Deanery in 1975, with Rosemary as his new wife, to be Head at School and on its closure to be Head at from 1979 to 2000. David had that exceptional gift of delighting in helping children find freedom to grow and has been so important to so many of our young people in their formative years, as he has latterly with his grandchildren. As Reader, Church Warden, joint Chair of Deanery Synod, Bishop’s Visitor and committed follower of Christ has helped us all to seek for that freedom and growth too. Many thanks David and every blessing on all you have loved.

From June 23rd we quietly celebrate the official formation of Bolingbroke Deanery Group (BDG) (comprising, Stickney, Marden Hill, Partney & Spilsby Clusters) as both Martin and Jean had to resign as curates of the Spilsby Group and be licensed by Bp Christopher as curates in the new united BD Group. I cease being Priest in Charge of the Spilsby Group and become Team Rector of the new Group and we look forward to the Rev’d. Fran Jeffries starting her ministry as BD Group half time Team Vicar based as well as being half time Diocesan Discipleship Advisor (DDA).

South Ormsby Group will at some point soon stop having Cheryl Hilliam as Priest in Charge as she will become Rector. I am not sure of the date but these legal workings are a bit beyond me.

The one person who is changeless is Jane Howsam who continues to be Administrator for both Groups, Deanery Synod Secretary and Grape Vine Editor.

Jean and Teresa will of course be changed by their Priestly Ordination 28th June but they do not cease to be Deacons. That is fused into the expanded ministry of Service, Word and Sacrament.

I would like to say thank you to all those who gave up office or who took up new office at the Annual Meetings and would like to bless both in our continued working together.

Can I in particular say thank you to all members of Deanery Synod and MAP Group as we move to a New Synod in the autumn. Also to Bill Rose our Lay Chair of Synod for all the support he has given and for the elections of officers this autumn.

What needs to end in your life and what are the new beginnings? PC

St James Craft Mornings

Many thanks to everyone who supported the craft mornings and helped make fish decorations for the forthcoming art & craft fayre. My dining room is now covered in brightly coloured fish.

The enthusiasm led us to agreeing to do another craft morning on 12th July…I promise there will be no fish crafts allowed. If you would like to bring a craft activity along for everyone to have a go at please let me know. Also at this coffee morning there will be a fund raising stall for the Children’s Society so please come along and support that.

We are now collecting items for the raffle and hampers…if you would like to donate just look for the pink box at the back of the church…it’s the box with a fish on it! Raffle tickets are now on sale…make sure you have bought yours and if you are able to sell some please let me know. Once again thank you for your valued support and kindness. Jane

8 Eresby News

The week of May 18th was a busy week for the residents of Eresby as it was National Dementia week. The activities included a balloon race which proved quite hilarious as some of the balloons didn’t travel very far and some had to be dropped from a window! There was a coffee morning with scones and cream and as can be seen from the photographs this was greatly enjoyed.

We held a pet therapy day. This included 2 rabbits which we ended up keeping as the residents fell in love with them. We will let you know their names next month. Two kittens, dogs, 2 week old puppies and even a horse owned by one of the carers were brought to the home.

A fish and chip supper was delivered from Ambridges’ fish shop and residents loved eating them out of the paper. A Vintage ice cream van delivered ice creams. The Dementia cafe was also open. There was a real buzz about the home. A good week!

The craft group have been busy making flags of the world for June 20th which was National Care Home Day. The general public could visit the home to look round and see the wonderful facilities that are available. The residents, staff, volunteers and families enjoyed a hog roast at the end of the day.

Each home has been given a country to concentrate on for the summer party at and Eresby have been given China so the craft group are preparing items for residents to take with them.

9 Some residents are also preparing for the annual holiday and this year they will be visiting Scarborough. Let’s hope they have some lovely warm weather. Help in the garden is still needed so if you know of anyone who has an hour to spare please ring Helena Shelton, the Manager. Thank you. Helena Shelton & Margaret Cook (volunteer)

New (“Fun”) Computer Virus (Please beware of Scams that start this way!!)

It’s also affected my computer…….

I thought you would want to know about this e-mail virus. Even the most advanced programs from Norton or McAfee cannot take care of this one.

It appears to affect those who were born prior to 1965.

Symptoms:

1. Causes you to send the same e-mail twice. Done that!

2. Causes you to send a blank e-mail! That too!

3. Causes you to send e-mail to the wrong person. Yep!

4. Causes you to send it back to the person who sent it to you. Aha!

5. Causes you to forget to attach the attachment. Well darn!

6. Causes you to hit "SEND" before you've finished. Oh, no not again!

7. Causes you to hit "DELETE" instead of "SEND." And I just hate that!

8. Causes you to hit "SEND" when you should "DELETE." Oh No!

IT’S CALLED THE "C-NILE VIRUS."

Have I already sent this to you? Or did you send it to me?

ST LUKE’S CHURCH

You are all invited to the special service in St Luke's on the evening of Tuesday 22nd July at 7 pm to meet and officially welcome the REV’D FRANCES JEFFRIES to our Group of Parishes and to the Bolingbroke Deanery. We would like to decorate the Church with welcome cards, posters and banners; if you would like to help please contact Angela or Bev (churchwardens) and we can organise a working party. After the service there will be a supper in the Village Hall and if you would like to help prepare please let us know.

Through the past few years we have been looked after by the Rev'd Joan Thornett, Canon Peter Coates , Rev'd Martin Faulkner, with other helpers, but it will be special to have a priest living in the Rectory, once again, joining the Team.

GIFT DAY - Saturday 12th July: Letters and envelopes should soon be dropping through your letterboxes inviting you to contribute towards the upkeep of our Church Building. We do understand that many incomes have to be stretched at this time but if you can spare even a little it will be much appreciated.

Dealing with the recent discovery of dry -rot, which has crept under two areas of flooring, is going to incur considerable expense and we will need support. Donations can be passed on at any time, or bring them on Gift Day between 10 am and 1 pm when we will be serving coffee/ tea/ squash etc.

THE CYCLISTS WILL PAY US THEIR ANNUAL VISIT also on 12th July around midday. Help us to welcome these “Men in Lycra” as they journey from to raising money for Cancer Research U.K. We shall present them with a cheque for the donations and money raised at the June bingo: a special thank you to all supporters.

CHURCH BINGO: The money raised for the bingo at the end of May was £362.90. Thank you again. Suddenly we are past the half way point of this year: holiday times draw near for many. May sunny days and the glory of the summer season give you time to enjoy the world around you.

These photos show Year 6 children from Stickney Primary C of E School attending the Church Schools Festival at Lincoln Cathedral on Tuesday, 3 June.

There are various activities that take place and this year our children did dance and gardens – where they made their own biodegradable pots out of newspaper, planted up small plants and made their labels using ‘whittling’ of sticks. Each group of children are also taken on a tour of the cathedral and given a talk by a tour guide. After lunch, they met together for a service 25 which included songs, dramatic reading and a presentation to the founder of the Church Schools Festival.

Over 300 Year 6 children attended the Cathedral on this day, however it welcomes over 2000 children over the course of two weeks.

TUESDAY 22nd JULY 7.00 pm

A SPECIAL SERVICE TO WELCOME THE REV’D FRANCES JEFFRIES TO THE DEANERY IN ST LUKE’S, STICKNEY

FOLLOWED BY REFRESHMENTS IN STICKNEY VILLAGE HALL

Thoughts about July

It was, of course, named after a great Roman, Julius Caesar, who I always associate with Richard Burton, as he brought Shakespeare to life in a way that school never did. Summer term ends during July much to the joy of children and the dread of some parents as they do their best to entertain the family without too much expense. Our gardens are blooming, inviting a time of respite to enjoy the results of previous efforts - a time of rest and relaxation.

It's not that easy though, is it? Our modern lifestyle of rush, rush, rush builds us up into top gear all the time and relaxation takes time to achieve. It is essential though to take a break sometimes and step back into quietness of mind and body, in order to recharge our batteries. Even God stopped work on the seventh day of creation. We, however, go shopping, drive miles to the seaside, or make stressful visits to distant relations. We find it hard to simply sit and do nothing, to listen to music, to take up an unfamiliar hobby, to go for a walk in the countryside etc. We double check our work duties, we keep our ears stuck to mobile phones and the television is constantly in the background, without us really watching it. Would the world really stop if we did nothing on a Sunday for instance? A time of quiet during a visit to church can work wonders for some but not all of us are able to do that. However, we could all take time to listen to the voice of God within our minds, forget our troubles, reflect on the weeks gone by, or perhaps think how we can help others. Our essential services e.g. hospitals, fire stations and police stations all need to remain operational seven days a week but shift work patterns allow for staff to rest, so few people have a genuine

26 excuse not to relax occasionally. Our time is what we make of it.

July 2014 is a cause for joyful celebration. The new Bishop David Court is soon to be welcomed to Grimsby and the new part-time priest Reverend Frances Jeffries will join the Stickney community of churches. They will both, no doubt, be feeling nervous but excited about their new posts and we will have high expectations of them both. Let us also ensure we ask only what they can give of themselves and allow them their own personal times of rest and relaxation to the benefit of all as they do God's work in . I.G.

The Reverend Teresa McLaughlin, Curate , The South Ormsby group of Parishes Your South Ormsby Group of Parishes flourishes because of you. The success and future of the group is in your hands, the responsibility is yours and mine. I spoke of Robert Clarkson in my letter, We have been blessed with knowing so many wonderful people over the years. Do you remember Audrey Thackray? I was reminded of Audrey because of Teresa. You now have another priest to nurture, you should all be very proud that within our tiny, tiny group of parishes Teresa felt God call her to minister to you and she has followed her vocation to the ordained priesthood. Keep her and Paul in your prayers. Why did this remind me of so many wonderful group people and Audrey? As I sat watching Teresa at the wonderful service in Lincoln Cathedral I was reminded of one of “ Audrey’s Odes” 50 Wonderful Years, written in celebration of the group’s 50th anniversary and published again for our 60th anniversary: Fifty wonderful years started not without fears, Groups had never been tried before! For each church was the care of the priest serving there. Each village its own special lore, but the time had come, something had to be done. Even God’s men they needs must retire. And as the flock grew and shepherds were few, a group rector was the desire. Well a superman came, Arthur Smith was his name, and he laboured with unceasing care. Organising a church and the choir was a must and new bibles for all to share. And such was his fame many curates they came to serve and to willingly learn. Then as rectors moved on, before very long, they served the group in their turn. And the group has been blessed with priests of the best, each one bringing visions new. Giving real pastoral care and always being there, if there was a task to do…… Teresa is now one of those “priests of the best” You have nurtured her thus far and I know you will continue to do so. I write of Teresa but of course we keep Jean, our other “new priest” in our prayers and Fran, Stickney’s newly appointed priest. The Bolingbroke Deanery is working very hard to keep you spiritually fed and nurtured. Please ensure we are all kept in your prayers and please do remember to tell us of any issues, as Audrey said; It could not have been easy we know, so we celebrate now, perhaps wondering how, through good times and bad, many traumas we’ve had. But wonderful blessings we’ve known. So, to God be the praise, often hidden his ways. So let’s carry on, sometimes weak, sometimes strong, knowing he’s always near. Amen to that, thank you Audrey. 31

Words

Our lives are influenced by words, whether spoken or unspoken. One of my favourite words, although not perhaps its meaning, is; Oligopoly I do not know how, where or when but oligopoly was a word I heard the “grown ups” utter many decades ago. I thought perhaps it was one of those words only “grown ups” were allowed to say. Oligopoly, I would say it to myself over and over, count the syllables on my fingers; ol, i, gop, ol, y. I would use it to skip to, to count in fives to. What a sad child! Never once did I ask the meaning or anything about it. Oligopoly, wonderful sounding collection of letters. I did eventually look the word up in a dictionary, but back then I was none the wiser; A market condition in which sellers are so few that the actions of any one of them will materially affect price and have a measurable impact on competitors. from oligo- + Greek pōlein to sell, on the model of monopoly

In today’s world oligopoly flourishes and in most instances, not to the benefit of the hard working or the poor. But it still remains one of my favourite sounding words. Thinking about words led me to some of the amazing people I have met and been influenced by. I thought about Robert Clarkson, chairman of the South Ormsby Group when I came. Robert, together with Anne White and several other selfless people, worked tirelessly and magnificently for you and the group during the interregnum. Robert gave me the initials of a word to live by; BIBLE. We were organising a bible study group and Robert asked if I knew the meaning of the word bible; Basic Information Before Leaving Earth. Again it was just one of those moments but I have always thought of his definition when opening my bible and it is another word which I constantly say to myself . As a priest morning and evening prayer are vital to my life and my faith, during these sacred times many of God’s words settle in my heart and I try to live by them as your priest. Five verses from St. Paul’s first letter to the people of Corinth contain many words which are vital to me as a person and as your priest; “ So it was my friends, that I came to you without any pretensions to eloquence or wisdom in declaring the truth about God. I resolved that while I was with you I would not claim to know anything but Jesus Christ- Christ nailed to the cross. I came before you in weakness, in fear, in great trepidation. The word I spoke, the gospel I proclaimed, did not sway you with clever arguments, it carried conviction by spiritual power, so that your faith might be built, not on human wisdom, but on the power of God.”

May God bless each and every one of us with his love and his guidance.

Breakfast Buns & Drinks!

A wonderful morning was had by all at the recent Coffee Morning organised by Rachel Morton in celebration of her 90th Birthday. It was amazing to see so many people enjoying the morning, the delicious refreshments, perusing the stalls and taking a turn on the tombola. The morning raised an incredible £550.00. St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice is extremely grateful to Rachel for wishing to celebrate her birthday in this way and for organising the morning. Thanks also to all the helpers and to everyone who came along and/or who donated is some way. It was a pleasure to meet so many of you and I appreciate the welcome extended to me during the morning.

I also recently attended a cheque presentation from GPC Industries based in Spilsby. The Company recently took part in a 30 years Anniversary Distributors Conference. A raffle and Auction were held with the prizes being very kindly donated by a number of the suppliers to GPC Industries. The raffle and auction along with other generous donations raised £2000.00. St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospices is a cause close to the heart of several staff members at GPC Industries including Mr Greg Clarke, Managing Director,

33 after the Hospice cared for his father 18 months ago. Again St Barnabas is extremely grateful for this amazing donation.

The monies donated from both the above will be used to enable the continuing delivery of care to both patients and their families living with a life limiting illness in the area. You may be interested to know that last year the Hospice supported over 6000 patients and families living with life limiting illnesses across the whole of the county.

Each year we hold a Sunflowers Memories appeal which enables supporters and friends of St Barnabas the opportunity to remember and honour loved ones. In return for a donation we will be growing an array of Sunflowers at our Hospice buildings across the county including our Louth Hospice, to bloom during June and July in memory of your loved one. If you prefer we can send you the seeds to your home for you to plant in your own garden. Every donation will be acknowledged with a sunflower card with the names of your loved ones written within. If you would like a Sunflowers memories appeal 2014 form please get in touch and I will send one to you.

Linked to this on Thursday 10th July 2pm – 6pm at the Louth Hospice, Grimsby Road, Louth LN11 0SX we will be holding a Sunflower Afternoon Tea party. An opportunity to enjoy refreshments and relax in the garden looking at our sunflowers and out over the idyllic fields. There will also be a selection of local craft and gift stalls, activities and music. Everyone would be most welcome to come along to this afternoon.

Our next Louth Hospice Coffee Mornings, will take place on Monday 21st July, 10am – 12 noon in the Hospice building. Everyone is most welcome to come along and see our wonderful Hospice facility and find out more about the work and services the Hospice delivers in the area.

And Finally.. whether you are looking for something different to do over the Summer, wishing to discover new places whilst on holiday or simply enjoy getting out in the fresh air our Summer Stroll-a-thons are the answer. Simply chose a date anytime in July or August and set your self a goal of `strolling 3miles (5K) contact me for a sponsorship form and start collecting now. You will be joining lots of people across the county all striding out in support of the Hospice!

If you would like more information on any of the above please do not hesitate to get in touch.
