Agenda Item #: PALM BEACH COUNTY / D: .3 0 ~.. ,t\. BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS AGENDA ITEM SUMMARY Draft, Subject to Change Meeting Date: April 23, 2013 [ ] Consent [ ] Regular [X] Workshop [ ] Public Hearing Department: Cooperative Extension Service Submitted By: Cooperative Extension Service I. EXECUTIVE BRIEF Motion and Title: Staff Requests Board Direction: Regarding the naming of the Mounts Botanical Garden. Summary: For over three decades, the land surrounding the Cooperative Extension Service Office has been known as the Mounts Botanical Garden, in honor of Marvin U. "Red" Mounts, former County Agriculture Agent. The Friends of the Mounts Botanical Garden (Friends), a non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization, desires to designate the name of the Mounts Botanical Garden to the "Palm Beach Botanical Garden at Mounts". On Wednesday, January 2, 2013, the Friends held their Board meeting with a quorum present and voted to make this request to the Board of County Commissioners. District 7(AH) Background and Justification: Marvin U. "Red" Mounts was the University of Florida, Palm Beach County Extension Agent and Director from 1925 to 1965. At that time, there was a significant population boom and a dramatic increase in the agricultural/horticultural industry and acreage in the County. His contributions included providing research and expertise to citizens and farmers, increasing food production methods, managing pasture grasses for an increasing cattle industry, teaching growers to "double crop" thereby providing food for U.S. Military Services and spearheading the growth of the agriculture industry to one of the largest in the nation. The eastern section of what is now known as the Mounts Botanical Garden was used by the Cooperative Extension Service for field variety trials to do research on crops that grow well in hot, humid, sandy, sub-tropical environment. -
