KANCHANABURI DSS, THAILAND 1. Physical Geography of the Kanchanaburi DSS Kanchanaburi province is located in the Western are of Thailand and administratively is included in the Central region. It is about 129 kilometers west of Bangkok Metropolis, the capital city. Kanchanaburi is Thailand's third largest province, covering an area of 19,486 square kilometers. The province includes both mountainous and plain areas and borders Myanmar to the west. The province of Kanchanaburi consists of 13 districts. 2. Procedures 2.1 Introduction The DSS area consists of 100 villages/enumeration districts scattered throughout Kanchanaburi province. The area is divided into five strata; urban/semi urban, rice, plantation, highland, and mixed economy. The selection of the 100 communities was structured to reflect diversity in social, economic and ecological conditions found in the province. The objectives are to monitor population change within the area and to evaluate the effects of interventions. Changes in population are to be linked to changes in social, economic and environmental conditions. This also includes study of health consequences of population change. 2.2 Data collection and processing Annual census is carried out between 1st July – 15th August, using three sets of questionnaires: village, household, and individual. The information on a global positioning of household is collected for every household and important place such as health centers, school, temples and community focal points. Interviewers are temporary hired during the survey and data processing. The data processing unit has six permanent staff. 3.
