PRESIDENT'S LETTER

Those people who become interested and involved in genealogy soon realize that there are premiums to be paid to be successful. Two of these are effort and expense. The two join to thwart even our best interests and means.

Sometimes it takes something called a "breakthrough" that is composed of finding data on an individual or on a family to spur our interest above the mundane sphere of work and cost. It compares to the power of a booster rocket sending its space shuttle into orbit. This kind of achievement has kept the art of genealogy alive!

Recently on a trip to Washington, D.C. I was concerned about my expenses, but then I found two generations on one of my lines , that I had thought to be unobtainable. I no longer felt any \ regrets about having made the trip!

The Northeast Alabama Genealogical Society is a great organization. I am proud to be a part of its membership. Do you belong? We invite you to join our ranks. Write to us about your membership. This would be especially a help to those with Alabama roots.

W. A. Lewis, Robert Pilgrim and Garland Wood need to. be singled out for their efforts on our building. Gentlemen, THANK YOU!

I also want to thank Willard Israel for his outstanding quarterly programs. He is a busy man. Whatever he does, he does well !

C. Jack Wood, President Northeast Alabama Genealogical Society, Inc.

The president requested committee and individual reports. Lawrence Gore, Treasurer gave the financial report, which showed our bank balance on January 10, 1992 to be $4,688.36. The Recording Secretary reported problems with the library copy machine due to moisture and temperature problems in the building. Suggestions were heard to solve the problem. It was reported that some older Etowah County, AL Circuit Court records had been moved to the Gadsden Public Library for preservation. They will be catalogued and made available to the public for research. A fund raising project was again mentioned, and local members will make an announcement on this later. Program Chairman, Willard Israel, introduced the speaker, Mr. Gale Peters, Director of the Southeastern Branch of the National Archives, East Point, GA, who distributed brochures relating to records available through National Archives. The Society voted to purchase a comprehensive set of books covering those holdings. SANSOM FAMILY The MICAJAH SANSOM family was enumerated in the 1850 Census of Murray County, Georgia. His wife LAMILA VANN is believed by some researchers to be a niece of Cherokee Indian Chief JOSEPH VANN. The Vann family lived in Murray County, Georgia, and Vann House State Historic Site, at Spring Place, Murray County, Georgia, is the restored 1804 mansion of Cherokee Chief JAMES VANN. Prior to 1850 the Sansom's lived in Walton County, Georgia. Daughter Emma, the "Heroine of the Southern Confederacy," stated that she was born in Social Circle, Walton County, Georgia on 2 June 1847. About 1852 Micajah Sansom moved his family to Cherokee County, Alabama to claim new Indian lands near Gadsden which he had purchased from the government. The Gadsden area is now in Etowah County.

Sansom b. 1841 Walton Co, GA (m) Lucy Margaret Collier Emma Sansom b. 2 June 1847, Social Circle, Walton Co, GA (m) Christopher Ballard Johnson In February 1895, Emma Sansom, the youngest child of Micajah and Lamila Vann Sansom was honored as the "Heroine of the Southern Conf ederjacy" by an act of the Alabama legislature when it commissioned the Seal of Alabama to commemorate the heroic and patriotic deed she performed during the Civil War.

On May 2, 1863 during a skirmish at Black Creek, near her home in Gadsden, the Yankee raiders burned the bridge to slow the pursuit of Confederate General . Upon the arrival of Forrest's cavalry unit at the Sansom's gate, the General introduced himself and inquired of the little group of frightened women whether there was another bridge that his troops might use to cross the swollen creek. Fifteen year old Emma courageously stated, i"I'll show you to a ford, General Forrest." Quickly, Forrest reached out his hand and mounted her behind him and raced upstream, under a hail of bullets as Emma guided him to the ford. Rebel yells echoed into the nearby wooded heights of Lookout Mountain.as the gray clad cavalry men raced behind their General who had never been stopped. In grateful appreciation for her -96- Northeast Alabama Settlers Vol. XXX, No. 4, Apri1 1992

SANSOM FAMILY (Cont'd) bravery, the General gave her a lock of his hair, and had her escorted back to her home. Emma's act of heroism enabled General Forrest to capture the Yankee Col. A. D. Streight and his entire command.

Later, General Forrest left Emma the following note: "Headquarters in the Saddle, May 2, 1863. My highest regards to Miss Emma Sansom for her gallant conduct while my posse was skirmishing with the Federals across Black Creek, near Gadsden, Alabama. N. B. Forrest, Brig. General, Commanding North Alabama."

The Seal of Alabama is a part of the state's history and serves to remind Alabamians of Emma Sansom's bravery, .and the motto, "Neither rashly nor timidly" which characterizes her deed. In her memory, a monument was erected in 1907 at' the Broad Street Bridge by the Gadsden Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy to honor her deed of heroism. The base-relief depicts Emma Sansom mounted behind General Forrest. Surmounting the base is the life-sized white marble figure of the young girl pointing as toward the ford.

Emma Sansom married 29 October 1864 to Christopher Ballard Johnson who served as a Private in Co. L, 10th Alabama Infantry. He was born 12 Dec 1832 and died 27 May 1887 in Upshur Co, . She died 9 August 1900 in Upshur County, Texas where she and Chris settled in 1876. Both are buried in Little Mound Cemetery.

-101- Northeast Alabama Settlers Vol. XXX, No. 4, April 1992 ABSTRACT HISTORY OF LAND TRANSACTIONS - 1852 to 1973 DWIGHT MANUFACTURING COMPANY & HOWARD GARDNER NICHOLS MEMORIAL LIBRARY

Some of you may have wondered, as I have, about the history of our attractive library, which is located in what was in prior years called the "Mill Village" of Alabama City. It is constructed of red brick, and the interior is trimmed in rich oak. The building was originally one room, extending across the front as the photo reflects. In the rear center was originally located a smaller alcove where the books were kept. Lattice work across the front of the alcove gave it a "caged effect," with a window in the center where books could be ordered and received. Several years ago the size was more than doubled, giving us space for a reading room, a kitchenette, bathroom, storage area, with the original large room becoming an assembly room.

The lot on which the library is located is identified in the land records as lot #28, parcel Four of the City of Gadsden, Alabama. The lot is "V" shaped, and extends 151 feet along Cabot A-Venue on the west side, with the distance across the rear of the lot being 149.58 feet. For further legal clarification, the lot is located in the SE 1/4, of the SW 1/4, Sec. 31, TP 11, R6E, Etowah County, Alabama. Since the history of that part of Gadsden is so closely related to the exploits of our Emma Sansom, we feel it was altogether proper that the original 39.29 acres of land where the library is located was homesteaded by Micajah Sansom, Emma's father. That transaction took place December 1, 1852. For your review, a copy of the patent certificate #13867 is a part of this paper. While it is not mentioned, this was in Cherokee County, Alabama, at that time.

THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA: CERTIFICATE No. 13867 TO ALL TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME, GREETING: . ^Whereas Micajah Sansom of Murry County, Georgia, has deposited in the General Land Office of the United States, a Certificate of the Register of the Land Office, at Lebanon whereby it appears that full payment has been made by the said Micajah Sansom according to the provisions of the Act of Congress of the 24th of April, 1820, entitled, "An Act making further provision for the sale of the Public Lands," for the South East quarter of the South West quarter of Section thirty-one in Township Eleven of Range Six, in the district of lands subject to the sale at Lebanon Alabama, containing thirty-nine acres!, and twenty-nine hundredths of an acre, according to the official plat of the survey of the said lands, returned, to the General Land Office by the Surveyor

General, which said tract has been purchased by the said Micajah Sansom. IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF, I, Millard Fillmore, President of the United States of America, have caused these Letters to be made Patent, and the Seal of the General Land Office to be hereunto affixed. Given under my hand, at the City of Washington, the first day of December in the Year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty-two and of the independence of the United States the seventy seventh.

By the President Millard Fillmore By Alex. McCormick Asst. Sec'y. E.S. Terry, Recorder of the General Land Office

Filed in office for record the 2nd day of July, A.D., 1920, at 10 o'clock A.M., and duly recorded the 2nd day Of July, 1920, Etowah County, Alabama.

Micajah married an Indian maiden, Lamila Vann, and the oldest child, Martha, was born in 1819. This was a year before they settled in Walton County, Georgia, and Emma was born there 2 June 1847. ' In the next few years the family would move to Murray County, Georgia, and in 1852, when Emma was five years old they would move to what is now Etowah County, Alabama. Micajah died 12-24-1859, in what was still Cherokee Coun_*i, and is buried in the median of West Meighan Boulevard, only 0.2 of a mile west of Black Creek, and in the same area where the Sansom home was located. Also buried in the original family cemetery are three others. One was Mattie Forest Johnson, a daughter of Emma, who died at an age of 4 to 6 years. Another was Aunt Fanny, the black mammy of the Sansom family, and who had moved from Georgia with them. The

•103- Northeast Alabama Settler^ Vol. XXX, No. 4, April 1992 fourth person was Robert Turner, a Confederate soldier who was killed in a skirmish at Black Creek on May 2, 1863. After Micajah's death, the Sansom family owned the land until the late 1870s. Joseph L. Cunningham was the administrator of the Sansom estate, and some legal action arose between he and T. W. Cowan Co., which was made up of a T. W. Cowan and W. P. Golightly. In the June 1877 term of Chancery Court, a Mr. James T. Brooks, Registrar of the Court, ordered the land sold at public outcry. Mr. Cunningham was the high bidder at $101.00, and Mr.Brooks gave hi'm a deed on 2-4-1878. The next transaction was on 10-1-1881, when Mr. Cunningham, and his wife Elizabeth sold the land for $225.00 to a Jeremiah Jones. The Jones family owned the land until 1-20-1887, when J.eremiah and wife, Martha 0. Jones (her maiden name was Turner), sold it for $450.00 to a T. J. Ramey. Less than a month later, or on 2-14-1887, Thomas J. Ramey and wife, Sallie L. Ramey sold one-half interest in the land for $475.00 to Andrew J. Lawrence. We wonder if Mr. Lawrence was a single man when he made the purchase because on 12-15-1891, he gave a one-half interest in that land, plus another 6 acres in Attalla t'o his wife, Mildred W. Lawrence. The Consideration was $1.00 and other valuable consideration, including a legacy placed in his possession at the time or soon after his marriage. On 11-23-1894, Mildred W. Lawrence and husband A. J. Lawrence, sold an individual one half-interest in the plot of land to Dwight Manufacturing Company. This was the beginning of this concerns purchase of over 3000 acres of land on which the large cotton mill would be built. Some of the land would be used to build homes for employees, churches, schools, and the library for the use of all. On the same date, Thomas J. Ramey and wife Sallie sold the remaining one-half interest in this land to Dwight Manufacturing Company. While the construction of 20,000 spindle cotton mill began in 1895-96, construction on the library did not begin until late 1898, 'and early 1899. A short article in the February 7, 1899, issue of The Gadsden Times-News read, "A force of men have gone to work on the new library and from present appearance will soon have it up. It) is said the Church will be the next erected." A March 23, 1900, article in the same paper stated the library building was nearing completion. The Nichols family realized the value of education of young Southern boys and girls, thus the building of a building and stocking it with books would be of great value to that end. We did wonder what would the name of the library be today had not a very unfortunate accident occurred in the early morning hours of May 20, 18196. While the Nichols family would donate the library for the use and benefit of employees and others, they would name it in honor of, and as a memorial to their son. Howard Gardner Nichols,

-104- Northeast Alabama Settler, Vol. XXX, No. 4, April 1992 the 24 year old son of J. Howard and Charlotte Peabody Nichols of Massachusetts was put in charge of all construction connected with the plant, houses, etc. Young Nichols was assisting men in the location of a large dynamo in the plant, when it fell, and he was seriously injured. While it was felt with the best of medical attention he would survive, he expired June 23, 1896. Thus, the library came into being as a memorial to him. The exact date the library opened has been lost in family records, but in an article in the Gadsden Times, December 3, 1936, by reporter Frank Padgett, it is indicated the best estimate was the Spring of 1900. Mr. Padgett went on to point out there were about 2,500 books in the library; that it was open Monday^, Wednesday, and Friday of each week from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. The building continued as a library until the thirties, when books!, periodicals, etc. were moved to the present Alabama City Library. That building also became known as the Howard Gardner Nicholk Memorial Library. In his 1936 article Mr. Padgett stated th£ building was deserted, but as to when it was first vacant we were not able to determine. When World War II began and more women with children entered the work force, Dwight officials saw the need for a facility to take care of the children during the work day. Thus,; they opened the building as a children's day care nursery. Their own carpenters built tables, chairs, cots, etc., for the children and the operation of it was handled by Mrs. Ola Hamil. She first worked for Dwight in this venture until about the time the plant was closed. At that time she rented the premises and continued to operate the nursery. She was able to get the State of. Alabama to license it as a Day Care Nursery, and her's was one of the first in Northeast Alabama. In early 1971, Cone Mills, the successor to Dwight Manufacturing Company, decided to sell the building, and it was purchased by the Hamil family May 12, 1971. Mrs. Hamil continued to operate it as a nursery until 1973, when she retired. We have the Hamil family to thank for wanting to!honor the original intent of the Nichols family in maintaining it jls , a memorial to their son. Two local organizations, the Etowah Historical Society, and the Northeast Alabama Genealogical Society, were contacted in regard to purchasing the property, and on 6-30- 197 3, Gary Lee Hamil and wife Judy C. Hamil sold the library to the Northeast Alabama Genealogical Society. A copy of the deed is a part of this report and you will observe there was a ten year restriction placed on the deed that the property was to be held, owned and operated as a memorial library. Again we appreciate the wishes of the Hamil family, and as members of the Northeast Alabama Genealogical Society, we trust this restriction extends from now on.

This Indenture, made this 30th day of June, 1973, between Gary Lee Hamil and wife Judy C. Hamil of the

For the benefit of all of us, we want to tell you the Howard Gardner Nichols Memorial Library was the first public library in the State of Alabama. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places in America. As members of our Genealogical Society, we welcome your visit to the beautiful building, and we trust our efforts in repairing and maintaining it will enable future generations to enjoy it.

W. A. Lewis (President Elect) Northeast Alabama Genealogical Society, Inc.

FUND DRIVE HOWARD GARDNER NICHOLS MEMORIAL LIBRARY In the last issue of our quarterly, mention was made of repairs which have been made to the porch of our library and that we were considering a fund drive in the spring for other needed repairs. That time has arrived, and in this issue we hope our out- of-town members and friends will take note of the drive.

We are also getting local newspaper publicity to notify local interested people of a combination library Open-House and Yard Sale on S'aturday, April 25, 1992, 8:00 AM until 3:00 PM. Several people in the surrounding community have shown interest in, and an appreciation for maintaining the building. We feel sure that we will have a good participation in the function. We already have non-members who will donate both time and sale items to make this a success, and know local members will contribute in many ways toward the effort. Publicity regarding the fund drive will be given in personal contact by local members to other civic organizations, and we will also mention it to those attending our annual Seminar on April 11, 1992. To those of you who live too far away to assist physically, we solicit your moral support, plus whatever other contributions you desire to make. As most of you know, we are a non-profit organization, and your contributions will be tax deductible. We trust you will want to assist us in maintaining our beautiful library. Your donation, regardless of the amount will certainly be appreciated.
