Bob Donnan STEPPING FORWARD David Noel is Carolina’s undisputed leader.

by Adam Lucas, Tar Heel Monthly P Eight Tar Heels logged at least 10 minutes in the 2005 NCAA championship game. Only one of them, David Noel, is attending L

classes in Chapel Hill this fall. A

It’s not quite equivalent to being the new kid in school, but it is Y

striking to see Noel wandering the halls of the Smith Center with- E out best friend Raymond Felton or cracking jokes while doing shooting drills without partner in crime Jackie Manuel nearby. For R

three years, the group was inseparable. Now just Noel remains. To ease the transition, he spent two weeks in Oakland this sum- P

mer with Quentin Thomas. R “It hasn’t been as lonely as I thought it would be, and that time in Oakland is a big O reason why,” Noel says. “Spending time with ‘Q’ was really important, and when I was

back in Chapel Hill I spent a lot of time with Reyshawn (Terry). We’ve bonded with F

people we might not have bonded with before and that is going to be important for this I

team. L

“In a sense I’m starting over. But at the same time we want to pick up where we left E

off. Starting fresh with new guys is always fun, because you learn about new people and S what they can do. I’m finding new friends and new people to rely on.” The Durham native, who attended the NBA Draft this summer and spent some time playing pickup games against several of the draft hopefuls, hasn’t really had time to be lonely. He’s essentially taken over the role of the face of the Tar Heels, which comes with significant responsibility—and time commitments. He’s on the cover of the media guide, one of the featured faces on the team poster, and is almost always the first interview request from anyone searching for a Tar Heel story angle. “Right now, it’s still fun to have all these things to do,” Noel said. “I don’t have too much more to do. Once the season starts it may be a little hectic, but I’m going to be the same person regardless. I consider it to be a blessing.” But being the senior leader isn’t solely about photo shoots and interviews. Last year Jawad Williams organized most of the informal team pickup games. This year that responsibility has been passed to Noel. When coaches need to arrange a team function, they usually turn to Noel first. “I’ve taken it upon myself to do a lot of those things,” he said. “I want to get us on a schedule and make sure everyone can schedule themselves accordingly. I definitely 2

take that as part of my leadership role.” 0

But being the acknowledged leader of this year’s squad doesn’t mean Noel could 0 coast over the summer. Roy Williams handed him a long list of needed improvements 5

in his game before the summer began. With Byron Sanders the only returning post pres- N ence and Tyler Hansbrough likely to go through an adjustment period to college basket- a t

ball, Noel seems destined to reprise the role he played as a freshman—undersized post i o

warrior. n

Last season he was effective guarding players on the wing in tandem with Jackie a

Manuel, using his size and strength to harass undersized opponents. This year he’ll have l

to use guile and quickness to stay with opposing posts. C “Coach always wants us to work on defense,” Noel says. “I know I’ll be in the post h a

more this year. But in the post it’s a little bit easier to guard people because they don’t m move around as much. I’ll be smaller than most guys I guard, but I’ll also be quicker.” p i o n s
