RICHARD and ROBERT SHERMAN DAY September 24, ZOI I

WHEREAS, the wrote more motion-picture musical song scores than any other songwriting

team in film history. Film scores of the Sherman Brothers include Mary Poppin~ The Jungle Book, and ; and

WHEREAS, the Sherman Brothers have written numerous top selling songs including "You're Sixteen," which reached Billboard's Hot I 00 top I 0 twice: first with Johnny Burnette in 1960 and then at #I with more than thirteen years later. Other top-ten hits include "Pineapple Princess," "Let's Get Together," and more; and

WHEREAS, they also wrote what is perhaps their best-known song, "It's A Small World {After All)" for the 1964 New York World's Fair. Since then, some have claimed this has become the most translated and performed song on Earth; and

WHEREAS, in 1965, the Sherman Brothers won two for , which includes the songs "," Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious," and the Oscar-winning "Chim Chim Cher-ee." Since Mary Poppins' premiere, the Sherman's have subsequently earned nine Academy Award nominations, two Gram my Awards, four Gram my Award nominations, and 23 gold- and platinum-certified albums; and

WHEREAS, Robert and Richard Sherman worked directly for , completing the scores for the live­ action musical films and The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band until Disney's death in 1966. Since leaving the company, the brothers have worked freelance as songwriters on scores of motion pictures, television shows, theme-park exhibits, and stage musicals; and

WHEREAS, their first non-Disney assignment came with Albert R. Broccoli's motion picture production Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in 1968, which garnered the brothers their third Academy Award Nomination; and

WHEREAS, in 1970, the Sherman's returned to Disney for a brief stint where they completed work on The Aristocats and Bed knobs and Broomsticks. The latter film garnered the brothers their fourth and fifth Oscar Nominations, respectively. 1972 saw the release of Come Home, for which the brothers received a Gram my nomination; and

WHEREAS, in 1976, "" was picked to be the Royal Command Performance of the year. The performance was attended by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. A modern musical adaptation of the classic Cinderella story, "Slipper", also featured songs, score, and screenplay by the Sherman Brothers. Two further Academy Award nominations were garnered by the brothers for the film. That same year the Sherman Brothers received their star on the "Walk of Fame" directly across from Grauman's Chinese Theater; and

WHEREAS, the Sherman Brothers' numerous other Disney and non-Disney top box office film credits include The Parent Trap ( 1961 ), The Parent Trap ( 1998), Charlotte's Web ( 1973), The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh ( 1977), Snoopy, Come Home ( 1972), Bed knobs and Broomsticks ( 1971 ), and Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland (I 992):

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that by the adoption of this resolution the Los Angeles City Council does hereby declare September 24th, ZOI I, RICHARD AND ROBERT SHERMAN DAY in the City of Los Angeles. They are American legends, forever and irrevocably tied to children's films, theater, music and the entertainment history. May their music and careers continue to influence professional and aspiring artists for generations to come.

WHEREAS,Accie Mitchellwas born September8, 1936in San Francisco,California, he is the only child of Mattieand A.C. Mitchell.After junior high school he was acceptedat the prestigiousLowell High Schoolwhere he was one of four African Americanstudents. His academicstrengths were quicklyrecognized by the teachersand administrators,as was his tenacity and willingnessto questionthe statusquo. This trait has alwaysbeen a challengeto thosewho believethey are in charge. After graduationhe attended Universityof San Franciscoand received his BS in Sciencefrom San FranciscoState Universityin 1960;and

WHEREAS,Acciewas acceptedinto the HowardUniversity School of Medicineand in August1961 took the long train ride from Californiato Washington,DC. He had no moneyand no idea how he would pay for his education.He remembers walkingup and downthe hill betweenadministration buildings looking for someonewho wouldassist him with his plight.His angelcame in the bodyof Mrs.Runners in DeanRobert Jason's office; and

WHEREAS,After graduationfrom MedicalSchool, Accie returnedto Californiawhere he completedhis internshipat Queen of AngelsHospital and his residencyat HollywoodPresbyterian Hospital under the mentorshipof the preeminentDr. Leroy Weekes;and

WHEREAS,Dr. Weekesprepared office spacefor Accie in his medicalcomplex but he had his sights on a medicaloffice building,Florence Western Medical Clinic, where three doctorswere establishedwith mostlywhite patients.The Wattsriots had occurredand the majoritypopulation was fleeingthe inner-city.In 1970Accie purchased the buildingwith no moneyand no idea how he could pay for it. He enteredinto what couldbe termeda "no win purchasecontract". All bets were that he could not meet his contractualobligations. Before his retirementfrom "hands-on"medical practice in 2007 he was seeing third generationpatients at FlorenceWestern Medical Clinic which serves over 5000 patients. Communityservice and outreachis a majorfocus of Dr. Mitchell'spersonal and professionallife. Whenoperating the familypractice clinic at Florence Western,he providedlow-cost physical examinations to studentathletes and mentoredcollege-bound high schoolstudents, oftenpaying for their SATprep and test takingfees; and

WHEREAS,In 1997 Dr. Mitchell single handedlyorganized CommunityFamily Care, IPA (CFC). This Independent PhysiciansAssociation, (IPA), was started to insurethat patientsin the underservedareas of Los Angeleswould continue to have accessto quality medicalcare in the advent of Health MaintenanceOrganizations becoming the major source of healthcaredelivery in America.Large medical organizations that, in the past, had little or no interestin providingcare to the "fee for service" MediCalpopulation were vying for the captivatedpatients, Today CFC has over 250 physicians,in all specialties,serving over 60,000 patients in the poorestareas of Los AngelesCounty and the AntelopeValley; and

WHEREAS,Dr. Mitchellis a foundingmember of the NationalSickle Cell DiseaseResearch Foundation. In 1973he testified beforeCongress about the needfor fundingfor SickleCell research.He is a memberof the NationalMedical Association, Los AngelesUrban League and NAACP.Dr. Mitchellis proudto be a foundingmember of the Los AngelesGuardsmen. He is a formerboard member of RevivingBaseball in InnerCities (RBI) and is a strongsupporter of the Boysand Girls Clubsof LosAngeles and the SanFernando Valley; and

WHEREAS,In additionto setting a strong examplefor his own family, the role that Dr. Mitchellhas playedin the lives of many young people is exemplary.Without hesitation Accie has counseledand guidedthose around him in the areas of medicine,business and life. Dr. Mitchelland his wife, Gloria,have beenmarried 35 yearsand are the proudparents of five adult children,Cynthia, Tracy, Lori, Marcand Alex. Theyare even more proudof their grandchildren,Jason, Briella, Eliana, Harrisonand Bennett:

NOW,THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED,that the City Councilof the City of Los Angeles,does herebyjoin in celebration along with your family and friends to extend our very best wishes and many happy returns as you celebrateyour 75th Birthday.
