Xenosaurus phalaroanthereon Nieto-Montes de Oca, Campbell, and Flores-Villela, 2001. This knob-scaled lizard is endemic to the state of Oaxaca, where it occurs in the Montañas y Valles del Centro and Sierra Madre del Sur physiographic provinces at elevations from 1,670 (García- Padilla and Mata-Silva, 2014) to 2,185 m. Individuals of this live-bearing species occupy the interior of crevices, usually singly, in small granite boulders located on hillsides covered with oak and pine-oak forest. Populations persist, however, at sites converted to agricultural use, such as cornfields (Lemos-Espinal and Smith, 2005). Its EVS is calculated as 16, which places it in the middle portion of the high vulnerability category (Wilson et al., 2013a), and its IUCN status is Data Deficient. This species is one of 10 members of the monogeneric family Xenosauridae, which is endemic to Mesoamerica. All but one of the species is endemic to Mexico. Pseudoeurycea naucampatepetl. The Cofre de Perote salamander is endemic to the Sierra Madre Oriental of eastern Mexico. This relatively large salamander (reported to attain a total length of 150 mm) is recorded only from, “a narrow ridge extending east from Cofre de Perote and terminating [on] a small peak (Cerro Volcancillo) at the type locality,” in central Veracruz, at elevations from 2,500 to 3,000 m (Amphibian Species of the World website). Pseudoeurycea naucampatepetl has been assigned to the P. bellii complex of the P. bellii group (Raffaëlli 2007) and is considered most closely related to P. gigantea, a species endemic to the La specimens and has not been seen for 20 years, despite thorough surveys in 2003 and 2004 (EDGE; www.edgeofexistence.org), and thus it might be extinct. The habitat at the type locality (pine-oak forest with abundant bunch grass) lies within Lower Montane Wet Forest (Wilson and Johnson 2010; IUCN Red List website [accessed 21 April 2013]). The known specimens were “found beneath the surface of roadside banks” (www.edgeofexistence.org) along the road to Las Lajas Microwave Station, 15 kilometers (by road) south of Highway 140 from Las Vigas, Veracruz (Amphibian Species of the World website). This species is terrestrial and presumed to reproduce by direct development. Pseudoeurycea naucampatepetl is placed as number 89 in the top 100 Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered amphib- ians (EDGE; www.edgeofexistence.org). We calculated this animal’s EVS as 17, which is in the middle of the high vulnerability category (see text for explanation), and its IUCN status has been assessed as Critically Endangered.

Tachiramantis gen. nov. includes three species formerly placed in the large genus Pristimantis. Mo- lecular phylogenetic analysis of data from five nuclear and mitochondrial genes shows that Tachiramantis is not part of Pristimantis or any other named genus in its family (Craugastoridae or Strabomantidae). Morphological evidence further supports the distinctiveness of Tachiramantis, which has several aspects of skull morphology that are rare or absent in Pristimantis and synapomorphic for Tachiramantis, including frontoparietal-prootic fusion and degree of vomer develop- ment. The terminal phalanges, which narrow greatly before expanding at the tips, may represent an additional morpholog- ical synapomorphy.

FINAL REPORT Project: Status and population trends of amphibians in relation to microenvironment at a montane forest, southern Mexico Georgina Santos Barrera and José Nicolás Urbina-Cardona Museo de Zoología, Facultad de Ciencias, UNAM A. P. 70-399, C. P. 04510 México, D. F. We present here the results of our Project which consisted in an intense field, laboratory and local community work. The present report is separated in two parts, the Part I contains the results of the social and environmental education activities while the second part includes the results of our scientific ecological research in the way of a scientific paper that we will submit soon to a specialized journal after reviewing by the CLP pertinent staff. Study site, background and justification: Our field work was conducted at the town El Molote, Municipality of Atoyac de Alvarez, Guerrero, Mexico (Figure 1). The project was initially conceived to study the dynamics of the amphibian communities in a fragmented cloud forest and to know the local interest of the people about the very interesting fauna of amphibians in the region. In this area we conducted four field seasons (8 to 10 days in duration) sampling eight selected sites throughout a large area of Tropical Mountain Cloud Forest (TMCF). We established a close relationship with the local people; we taught children everyday about diversity and natural history of amphibians and reptiles and coordinated scientific activities with them. A previous visit to the town and vicinities were made during April 2007 in order to select the study sites and to establish the pertinent contacts with the people.

With over 280 h of observations in an area of Rupestrian Grasslands (Ouro Preto, Brazil), we described the network of interactions between 2313 ants of 23 species and 200 plants of 10 species. Ants from all species were further submitted to an identical task of finding and removing a standardized herbivore surrogate (termites) to quantify the relative protection effectiveness of different ant species. We then correlated ant protection to the volume and concentration of sugar in the nectar as conditional factors and the herbivory damage as interaction outcome.

  • Crotalus Tancitarensis. the Tancítaro Cross-Banded Mountain Rattlesnake
Crotalus tancitarensis. The Tancítaro cross-banded mountain rattlesnake is a small species (maximum recorded total length = 434 mm) known only from the upper elevations (3,220–3,225 m) of Cerro Tancítaro, the highest mountain in Michoacán, Mexico, where it inhabits pine-fir forest (Alvarado and Campbell 2004; Alvarado et al. 2007). Cerro Tancítaro lies in the western portion of the Transverse Volcanic Axis, which extends across Mexico from Jalisco to central Veracruz near the 20°N latitude. Its entire range is located within Parque Nacional Pico de Tancítaro (Campbell 2007), an area under threat from manmade fires, logging, avocado culture, and cattle raising. This attractive rattlesnake was described in 2004 by the senior author and Jonathan A. Campbell, and placed in the Crotalus intermedius group of Mexican montane rattlesnakes by Bryson et al. (2011). We calculated its EVS as 19, which is near the upper end of the high vulnerability category (see text for explanation), its IUCN status has been reported as Data Deficient (Campbell 2007), and this species is not listed by SEMARNAT. More information on the natural history and distribution of this species is available, however, which affects its conservation status (especially its IUCN status; Alvarado-Díaz et al. 2007). We consider C. tancitarensis one of the pre-eminent flagship reptile species for the state of Michoacán, and for Mexico in general. Photo by Javier Alvarado-Díaz. Amphib. Herpetology Notes, volume 10: 651-658 (2017) (published online on 23 November 2017) New records and an updated list of herpetofauna from Cerro Piedra Larga, an isolated mountain massif in Oaxaca, Mexico Rafael Alejandro Calzada-Arciniega1,*, Ernesto Recuero2, 3, Mirna G. García-Castillo1 and Gabriela Parra-Olea1 Abstract. Oaxaca has the highest diversity of amphibians and reptiles of all the states in Mexico. Cerro Piedra Larga is an isolated mountain located in the southeast region of Oaxaca; this massif is covered by mixed temperate and cloud forest and surrounded by drier lowlands. A previous study reported a high diversity of vertebrate fauna on the massif, with 34 species of herpetofauna. During a sampling field trip to Cerro Piedra Larga in September 2014 we found a total of 22 species of amphibians and reptiles, 10 of which represent new records to the area, including six Mexican endemics. Our new records include two salamander species known previously only from their type localities in separate physiographic provinces and the others represent an extension to their geographical known distribution. With the new data we provide herein, Cerro Piedra Larga reaches 42 species of amphibians and reptiles. Ambrose, Co-Chair Professor Vance T. Vredenburg, Co-Chair Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), a fungal pathogen that causes chytridiomycosis in amphibians, has infected >500 species and caused declines and extinctions in >200 species. Recently, a second deadly fungal pathogen that also causes chytridiomycosis, Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans (Bsal) was discovered. The presence of these lethal pathogens in international trade threatens amphibian diversity. In this dissertation, I use a novel modeling approach to predict disease risk from Bd and/or Bsal to amphibian populations in North America and Asia by incorporating pathogen habitat suitability, host availability, the potential presence of an invasive carrier species, and pathogen invasion history. First I identify Bsal threat to North American salamanders to be greatest in the Southeast US, the West Coast, and highlands of Mexico. I then ii investigate the compounded risk of Bd and Bsal in North America and find highest relative risk in those same areas and in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the northern Rocky Mountains.
