  • Shoreline Summary
HESKETH WITH BECCONSALL PARISH COUNCIL Shoreline Summary Edition Number 20 October 2010 ~ I can’t believe that it is now very nearly October, whatever happened to July and August (and for that matter September), in fact where has summer gone? The old saying ‘the older you get the faster time passes’ is proving to be very true in my case! My memory of summers were long hot sunny days throughout the summer ‘months’, now summer seems to be two weeks in June followed by weeks of warm, wet, humid weather and believe it or not, a water shortage and hose pipe ban! You can normally guarantee rain when it’s Southport Flower Show week and it is to be hoped that the winner of the Parish Councils ‘Win Tickets for the Flower Show’ competition, featured in the last edition of Shoreline Summary, benefitted from a dry day. Seven entrants got the correct answer to the question ‘what is the botanical name of the Pot Marigold?’ - Calendula officinalis; it’s a member of the daisy family Asteraceae and is commonly used in cooking. Congratulations go to Mrs Holly Kirkham of Holwood, Shore Road, Hesketh Bank whose entry was the first drawn from the hat. All the Councillors hope that you enjoyed your visit. THANKS TO ……….. Arden Lea Nurseries Ltd who has again kindly donated the hanging baskets that brightened up the village during the summer and for stocking the large planter on the corner of Moss Lane which has added a splash of colour to that area. Booths and the Eric Wright Group for the care and consideration they have shown to the local community in minimising disruption during the construction of the new store.

  • School Bus Information 2021 – 2022
School Bus Information 2021 – 2022 Lancashire County Council: Home to School Transport 2021-2022 Department of Education: Home to school travel and transport guidance. July 2014 Under section 508 (B) of the Education Act 1996 we must provide free transport to and from school for your child if they are aged 5 to 16 and they live outside the legal walking distance between your home and the nearest qualifying school. We must provide additional assistance for families who have a low income. The Department for Education published statutory guidance for local Authorities in July 2014; Home to school travel and transport guidance. Information about the Transport Assistance. The admission information which is available for all parents from each September (online and paper where requested) provides a summary transport policy. Parents are advised to check the policy carefully if getting their child from home to school and back is a consideration. Parents are directed to a full copy of the Home to School Transport Policy on the Lancashire County Council website and to seek advice from the area education office if they have any queries. Due to the many changes within the policy for school travel in Lancashire we are asked a number of questions about how to apply for school transport passes. We would like to make parents aware of the County Councils School Transport website, which offers useful information and advice of what parents need to do: http://www.lancashire.gov.uk/children-education-families/schools/school-transport.aspx In addition to the website we would also like to make you aware of the dedicated school transport hotline number 0300 123 6738 and email address [email protected] which can be used to answer any queries you may have.

Dig In Community Food Growing in West Lancashire Show What You Grow 2019 School children from across West Lancs celebrated their growing achievements recently our annual Show What You Grow day. Over 50 children from 8 schools brought their school grown produce, homemade scarecrows and displays of their work to the celebration event organised by the Community Food Growing project and West Lancs Allotment Federation. Mayor Gaynar Owen opened the event, and the children enjoyed explaining their gardening activities as she toured the displays. They then enthusiastically demonstrated their skills in the gardening quiz, the Grow Your Own activity books and by creating fantastic bugs, bees and butterflies out of vegetables. In the afternoon, the children took to the stage to share their gardening club stories and then cheered on their teachers as they took part in a welly throwing competition. The day ended with prize giving and taking home a range of goodies to help their growing efforts in the year ahead. The children were joined at the event by Ranger Anne from the Borough Council’s Ranger Service who brought a display of popular educational resources she is developing for use in Tawd Valley Park - currently the focus of a major regeneration project in Skelmersdale. The CVS is grateful to Skelmersdale based business ‘All About Food’ who donated a prize for the Best Display of Work. The lucky winning school was Holmeswood Methodist primary. The event was also supported by M.A Forshaw of Scarisbrick who provided the vegetables. Thanks go to West Lancashire College for use of their gym as the event venue and above all to Upholland Tawd Vale Lions for funding the event.

  • Lathom Abbey Lodge No 2229 It Is Right to Acknowledge That from the Establishment of the Lodge of Harmony and the Concern Of
Lathom Abbey Lodge No 2229 It is right to acknowledge that from the establishment of the Lodge of Harmony and the concern of those early Masons a foundation was laid from which the Ormskirk Group was eventually established, of which Lathom Abbey is a part. WBro Charles M.Hesford, Chairman of the Ormskirk Group and a Past Master of the Lodge of Harmony instigated the move to form Lathom Abbey Lodge when in 1945 he spoke to WBro.John E Funk and WBro. E R Skaife suggesting the formation of another lodge. The establishment of Pilgrim in 1946 just prior to the formation of Lathom Abbey Lodge in 1947 was to provide Masonic facilities to those who had come out of Liverpool during the war years. They met at the Kings Arms whilst Lathom Abbey was to draw its members from the business community of Ormskirk and met at the Wheatsheaf Hotel. During the meeting on 16 November 1945, at which the details relating to the formation were discussed, the name by which the Lodge was to be known brought the suggestion Abbey Lodge. When this was put to the Grand Lodge permission to use this name was refused on the grounds that the name was already in use by eleven orders. However, if a suitable prefix could be found this would be acceptable. The founders agreed upon Lathom Abbey Lodge. The Abbey referred to is, of course, Burscough Priory whose ruins now stand on Abbey farm which is situated in Lathom and adjacent to Lathom House which was the residence of the Derby family, hereby maintaining the Masonic connections between many pieces of local history.
