Courses in the core curriculum have been identified as “Writing Across the Curriculum” courses. Suggested minimum standards for Writing Across the Curriculum component are as follows: 1. The writing assignments should total 1500 – 2000 words. For example, a single report which is 1500 words in length could fulfill the requirement, or a series of essay questions and short papers (example: four 375-word assignments) which total 1500 words could meet the requirement. 2. The writing component will represent at least 10% of a student’s final grade in the MCC Form EDU 0007 (rev. 10/6/09) course. Is this course identified as a Writing Across the Curriculum course? Yes No Intended Course Outcomes By the end of the semester, students will be able to: 1. Draw objectively and descriptively by applying fundamental visual observation and drawing techniques. 2. Draw using a variety of mixed media. 3. Draw with wet and dry color media techniques. 4. Create drawings that evidence design principles and communicate specific expressive content. 5. Evaluate the form and content of drawings. 6. 7. Course Competencies and Objectives Competency 1 Students will demonstrate a variety of techniques and strategies for objective drawing. Objective 1.1 The student will be able to visually measure the subject. Objective 1.2 The student will be able to verify slope and direction of edges through sighting Objective 1.3 The student will be able to use sight techniques to visually compare the relative size and proportion of the parts of the subject. Objective 1.4 The student will be able to apply the concept of negative shape to avoid perceptual interference. Objective 1.5 The student will be able to apply continuous line to record the contours of the subject. Objective 1.6 The student will apply chiaroscuro to accurately record the value pattern of the subject. Objective 1.7 The student will render pattern from observation of the subject surface texture. Competency 2 Students will draw with a variety of media. Objective 2.1 The student will be able to make tonal drawings using dry media such as conte crayon, charcoal, graphite stick and powdered graphite. Objective 2.2 The student will be able to make drawings using wet and dry media in resist techniques. Objective 2.3 The student will be able to make drawings using a variety of pen patterns. Objective 2.4 The student will be able to make drawings using mixed media by combining materials such as solvents and graphite, crayon, and oil pastel. Competency 3 Students will draw using a variety of color media. Objective 3.1 The student will be able to make drawings using pastels, conte crayon, wax crayons, and gouache. Objective 3.2 The student will be able to make drawings using Prismacolor pencils in a variety of techniques. Objective 3.3 The student will be able to make drawings using wax, glue, mastic and gouach resists. Objective 3.4 The student will be able to make drawings using mixed media by combining materials such as graphite and solvents, Competency 4 Students will make expressive content apparent through a deliberate choice of formal elements and techniques. MCC Form EDU 0007 (rev. 10/6/09) Objective 4.1 The student will be able to limit values to high or low key to create a varied sense of mood. Objective 4.2 The student will be able to draw shapes that infer specific emotional expressions Objective 4.3 The student will be able to vary line quality to express mood and attitude of expression. Competency 5 Students will create compositions that demonstrate the effective application of design elements and principles. Objective 5.1 The student will be able to apply the principle of dominance and subordination to create emphasis Objective 5.2 The student will be able to position the subject to create a sense of balance Objective 5.3 The student will be able to use edge, line, speed, and direction to infer a sense of movement. Competency 6 Students will critique drawings in terms of form and content. Objective 6.1 The student will be able to discuss drawings using specific critical vocabulary to evaluate their effectiveness. Objective 6.2 The student will be able to apply principles of design to evaluate drawings. Objective 6.3 The student will understand professional techniques to matt, label, frame, jury and hang an exhibition of drawings. Explore a variety of dry media suchas conte crayon, graphite stick (woodless pencil), carpenter's pencils, sharpie markers, and water-soluable marker. MCC Form EDU 0007 (rev. 10/6/09) Sketchbook ( homework practice): Continuous contour drawings from life. Learning Unit Topic 2: Chiaroscuro Competency: 1,2,5,6 Objectives: 1.1,1.2,1.3,1.4,1.6,1.7,2.1,2.2,2.3,2.4,5.1,5.2,5.3,6.1,6.2 Activities/ Assignments: Read Chapter 6 Laboratory Activities: Using a variety of dry media indicate the effect of light and shadow using chiaroscuro techniques. Limit values to high key or low key to suggest expressive content. Sketchbook ( homework practice): Observe and draw 5 still subjects from direct observation using chiaroscuro. Learning Unit Topic 3: Texture and value pattern Competency: 1,2,5,6 Objectives: 1.1,1.2,1.3,1.4,1.6,1.7,2.1,2.2,2.3,2.4,5.1,5.2,5.3,6.1,6.2 Activities/ Assignments: Read Chapter 7 Laboratory Activities: Observe the varied textures of reflective, patterned surfaces, and roughly textured objects in a still life with a single light source. Observe and draw the the pattern of values with an awareness of the gradation and contrasts of values on various textured surfaces. Note that reflective surfaces have highly contrasting values while values are more subtly graded on less reflective surfaces. Note that native values in a pattern are different in comparison to background values even in strong light. Apply various marking patterns using pen and various other dry media. Sketchbook ( homework practice): Observe and draw 5 textured subjects from life. Learning Unit Topic 4: Dry Media Competency: 1,2,4,5,6 Objectives: 1.1,1.2,1.3,1.4,1.6,1.7,2.1,2.3,2.4,4.1,4.2,4.3,5.1,5.2,5.3,6.1,6.2 Activities/ Assignments: Read chapter 10 Laboratory Activities:Make three to five drawings in class from observation of the still-life using different dry media for each drawing. Note the fugitive nature of vine charcoal compared to the insistant definite quality of marker and soft graphite stick. experiment with smudging oil based charcoal. Layer charcoal and pastel with fixitive and re-draw. experiment with toned ground and erasures to add textural interest and variety while indicatng value pattern.
