Hester This dissertation was prepared under the direction of the candidate's dissertation advisor, Dr. Jane Caputi, Center for Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, Communication, and Multimedia and has been approved by the members of his supervisory committee. It was submitted to the faculty of the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters and was accepted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Khaled Sobhan, Ph.D. Interim Dean, Graduate College iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Jane Caputi for guiding me through this process. She was truly there from this paper’s incubation as it was in her Sex, Violence, and Hollywood class where the idea that James Bond could be repressing his homosexuality first revealed itself to me. She encouraged the exploration and was an unbelievable sounding board every step to fruition. Stephen Charbonneau has also been an invaluable resource. Frankly, he changed the way I look at film. His door has always been open and he has given honest feedback and good advice. Oliver Buckton possesses a knowledge of James Bond that is unparalleled. I marvel at how he retains such information.

WDAM Radio’s undercover record researchers have uncovered all the opening title themes, as well as “secondary songs” and various end title themes worth having. Our secret musicology agents also have gathered intelligence on virtually every known and verifiable* song that was submitted to and rejected by the various James Bond movie producers as proposed theme music. All of us at the station hope you will enjoy this musical license to thrill.** Rock on. Radio Dave *There is a significant amount of dubious data on Wikipedia and YouTube with respect to songs that were proposed, but not accepted, for various James Bond films. Using proprietary alga rhythms (a/k/a Radio Dave’s memory and WDAM Radio’s Groove Yard archives), as well as identifying obvious inconsistencies on several postings purporting to present such claims, we have revoked the license of such songs to be included in this collection. (For instance, two sites claim Elvis Presley songs that were included in two of his movies were originally proposed to the James Bond producers – not true.) **Watch for updates to this dossier as future James Bond films are issued, as well as additional “rejected songs” to existing films are identified and obtained via our ongoing overt and covert musicology surveillance activities. I have heard people deny this, but I was born in 1970. I have seen enough to know that it is true. • "He Strikes Like Thun-N-N-Nder-R-R-R
“He Strikes Like Thun-n-n-nder-r-r-r-BALL-L-L-L-L-L!” The Place of the James Bond Theme Song Mark R. McDermott Existing almost completely outside the narrative of the two dozen James Bond movies, the theme song played over the opening credits has served as one of the movies’ major promotional tools. In a world before Don LaFontaine-narrated trailers that took up half an hour of a theatrical program, national movie ads piled onto television networks’ “must-see-TV” Thursday nights, and a plague of magazines, cable channels and web sites devoted to covering movies before their release; the song from a Bond movie “of the same name” on heavy radio rotation was an avenue to free publicity. When these songs were effective, they conveyed something of the mood of the movies, or offered a tantalizing glimpse of Bond, his villain of the day, or the dystopian world in which Bond operates. During the greatest popularity of the Roger Moore movies, the theme songs became more about Bond’s sexual prowess. The later themes, though no longer as popular on American radio, continue to illuminate Bond’s world, and have remained one of the many repeated memes of the movies. Movies and Music History Given the apparently easy synergy that has existed between feature films and soundtrack albums during the Vinyl and CD eras, it can be hard to understand that it took so long to happen. An ad hoc arrangement between record companies and movie studios can be found even before the advent of talkies: pop chart maven Joel Whitburn documented the brief popularity of “Poor Pauline” by Arthur Fields (1915), a recording of the accompaniment composed for the 1914 serial The Perils of Pauline.

  • How the Films of James Bond Tells the World What
Policy Galore: How The Films Of James Bond Tells The World What Issues Really Matter Elise Sitzman,,y Geoffrey Peterson ( (y)faculty) Political Science University of WisconsinWisconsin--EauEau Claire Results James Bond rarely has direct conflict with the intelligence agencies of other Abstract nation-states. IfIn fact, t here is on ly one film – FYFor Your Eyes OlOnly – ihihin which Bond is in direct conflict with the legitimately authorized intelligence forces of another nation, those of the USSR. The James Bond films are icons of style and adventure. The films’ perfectly-tailored suits, gourmet food, Post-SPECTRE, Bond dealt with two types of villains: extremely wealthy and sleek automobiles have always reflected the evolving benchmarks of Western style. In the same way, individuals with a desire to control world events (Goldfinger) and large crime the Bond films can act as a measure of the evolving set of dominant western political issues, from the Cold organizations, including drug dealers (Live And Let Die & License To Kill), War to space weaponry, from the drug trade to blood diamonds. We do not view the Bond films as setting international arms dealers (The Living Daylights and Casino Royale), and the patterns for global issues. Rather, we assert they engage issues that have reached a critical mass in international smugglers (Octopussy). Western political consciousness. Always cutting edge, the Bond films have never shied away from the 1960s: The plots of Dr. No and You Only Live Twice focus on efforts of salient, even trendy, issues of their time. Thus, the Bond films function as a lagging indicator; once an issue SPECTRE to interfere in the space race.

  • An Undergraduate Journal of Historical Research
HISTORY MATTERS An Undergraduate Journal of Historical Research Volume 14 May 2017 Appalachian State University For the History Matters family The History of History Matters Appalachian State University Department of History Have you ever spent so much time and effort on something that you wanted to share it with other people? Have you ever felt unfulfilled receiving only a grade and your own satisfaction as rewards for your hard work? Have you ever wanted to get your work published? For these reasons History Matters was founded. In the spring of 2003, Eric Burnette, a freshman at Appalachian State University, was looking for an outlet for his research paper. He was frustrated by the lack of venues for undergraduate research, and he figured that other students probably felt the same way. Dr. Michael Moore, who had edited Albion, a professional journal of British history, for over 25 years, began advising Burnette on how best to go about starting an academic journal for undergraduate historical research. Another Appalachian student, Matthew Manes, was asked to join the interesting experiment, and together they laid the groundwork for History Matters. Our first deadline was in late January 2004. For the editorial staff, it was an extensive and time-consuming process of reading, revising, and communicating with both the authors and the Faculty Editorial Board. In the end, the collaboration published one research paper, one research essay, and three editorial book reviews. This first issue of History Matters: An Undergraduate Journal of Historical Research was published online on April 28, 2004. From the beginning, Burnette and Manes wanted to expand the journal.
