From Hebrides to Highlands…

Stunning scenery, mercurial weather, mountains and microsystems will all be celebrated in a new four–part series, Highlands, commissioned by BBC Scotland in conjunction with BBC Two. Highlands is being made by Maramedia, the same company which made the BAFTA Award-nominated Hebrides – Islands on the Edge.

Craig Hunter, Executive Producer for BBC Scotland, says: “This series is putting the kind of focus on Scottish wildlife, usually reserved for what we normally think of as exotic locations, and harnessing it all from the big to the small to showcase it in a dynamic and captivating way. This forms part of BBC Scotland’s commitment to a broad range of documentaries that show and reflect diverse aspects of life in Scotland, from the rural to the urban from the historical to the contemporary.”

Already filming, the project is aiming to capture stunning images ranging from red deer of Monarch of the Glen fame to capercaillies; from the merlins of the summer moors to the tiniest of life on the floor of the Caledonian pine forests, as well as the teeming life of the sea and lochs; from colonies of seabirds to orcas, from pearl mussels to crayfish and trout.

Nigel Pope, Managing Director of Maramedia, who will be executive producer on the project, said: “Our aim is to show the wildlife of the Highlands as it has never been seen before, from the big and expected beasts such as the red deer and eagles, and favourites such as red squirrels, ospreys and otters, to amazing fish and the ant life of the Caledonian pine forest, which have lived there from ancient times and we'll be using the latest in cutting-edge macro photography to film them.

“The amazing terrain north of the Highland fault-line from Arran up eastwards through the Cairngorms will be captured with one of the most extensive campaigns of aerial photography ever used on a British wildlife series. Through super slow-motion, infrared and underwater photography, we will be revealing amazing focus on the wildlife in the air, trees, on the rocks and in the lochs in intimate detail.”

The team includes award-winning cameraman Gordon Buchanan, alongside up and coming young cameramen Lindsay McCrae, of Cumbria, and Raymond Besant, who grew up in the Orkney Islands but now lives in Aberdeenshire, who have both been ‘earning their spurs’ in recent years on the likes of Spring and Autumnwatch.

As well as the wildlife and scenery, the team hope to reflect the dynamic changes in the landscape, wrought by weather, from scorching sunshine to blizzards across the mountains and moors. Added Nigel: “The ever-changing weather – good and bad – are part of the story of the wildlife and the landscape of the Highlands, part and parcel of its magic.”

Highlands, which began filming earlier this year, is a two year project which is expected to transmit in 2016.

TUESDAY 27 MAY TELEVISION & RADIO HIGHLIGHTS / BBC WEEK 21 ______

River City Tuesday 27 May BBC One Scotland HD, 8.00 – 9.00pm

This week in Shieldinch…the Lindsay family’s new start doesn’t begin well when schoolgirl Kirsty goes off the rails; Angus tempts Bob with a risky business deal; and Robbie and Will’s fostering dreams gather momentum. Alan, Angus and Kirsty Lindsay arrive to start a new life in Shieldinch. However, Liz and Malcom’s warm welcome meets a frosty reception from Alan who’s none-too-happy at having nosey neighbours on his doorstep. Angus ignores his father’s orders to meet a contractor at the site, opting instead to test drive a car he’s keen to buy. Less-than-impressed with her new home, teenager Kirsty plays truant from school, stealing a bottle of gin from the mini-market to drown her sorrows. Back at the house, Alan tracks down Angus, scolding him for being a no-show at work. Heading back to work, Alan is further humiliated when Frank Paton takes over key construction decisions, undermining his role as project manager. Zinnie comes across an intoxicated Kirsty and offers a shoulder to cry on but is horrified when Kirsty unleashes a tirade against Alan, painting a deliberately dishonest picture of her father. Meanwhile, newcomer Angus hits it off with Bob after a chance encounter. The pair end up in the pub and, over a few pints, Angus makes Bob a tempting, but illegal, business proposition. Will and Robbie prepare for a visit from social worker Sandra to discuss fostering. Feeling the pressure, Sandra quickly puts Will and Robbie at ease - she’d be happy to put them forward to fostering.

Kirsty Lindsay is played by Bobby Rainsbury, Angus by Scott Fletcher, Bob by Stephen Purdon, Robbie by Gary Lamont, Will by Scott Ryan Vickers, Alan by Stephen McCole, Liz by Eileen McCallum, Malcolm by Johnny Beattie, Frank Paton by Paul Thomas Hickey, Zinnie by Nalini Chetty and Sandra by Caroline Paterson.
