What’s Happening This Week Today’s Message

Luke 16:19-31 9:00 Sunday School Passing through the Gate 9:15 Choir warm up Today (29) 10:00 Worship Walking through the gate of an amusement park, one enters 11:00 Coffee fellowship a world of exciting sights and sounds. Passing through the gate of a cemetery, one enters a quiet space marked by the smell of fresh earth and the sight of names carved in stone. Tuesday 6:30 Yoga (Gym) Gates mark boundaries between homes and streets, safety (10/1) and danger, even life and death. Wednesday 7 pm AA (CR) tells a parable today of a gate that separates a rich man (2) from a poor man. The poor man, Lazarus, sat at the gate of (No Study this week) the rich man. Any time the rich man passed through the gate, Thursday 7pm Al-Anon (CR) he likely walked right past Lazarus. The gate kept the men in (3) two separate worlds, but it also was the place where they encountered one another. 10-3 Quilting It is interesting to notice that the rich man is not named in Friday (4) the gospel today, but the poor man’s name is mentioned sev- eral times. In naming Lazarus, Jesus highlights for us the reality and significance of the poor who sit at our own gates. 8-2 Consignment Sale/Quilt Raffle The rich man remains anonymous throughout the parable, Sale (Parking Lot/PH) but the poor man is named and blessed, even in death. Saturday (5) 8pm AA (CR) This parable certainly conveys judgment, convicting us of the way we walk past the poor among us. We erect gates of our own that separate us from those in need, and like the rich 9:00 Sunday School man, we expect to receive blessings regardless. But this par- Sunday 9:15 Choir warm up able also reminds us that Jesus sees those whom we refuse to (6) 10:00 Worship see, and he names those whom we would rather ignore. 11:00 Coffee Fellowship In his death and resurrection, has torn down the gates,

and our life in Christ is marked and changed by this fact. Today and every day, Jesus coaxes us past whatever sepa- Matthias Lutheran Church rates us from one another, calling us into a new reality and a 501 Powdersville Road new relationship based in Jesus’ love.
