A crossover work in this style creates unique challenges for the performer because it requires the person to have experience in both performance practices. The research on musical works in this style is limited. Furthermore, the research on the sections of improvisation found in this sonata is limited to general performance considerations. In my own study of this work, and due to the performance problems commonly associated with the improvisation sections, I found that there is a need for a more detailed analysis focusing on how to practice, develop, and perform the improvised solos in this sonata. This document, therefore, is a performer’s guide to the sections of improvisation found in the 1997 revised edition of Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano by Phil Woods.

Saturday Afternoon Jazz On the Air Music News Listen & Connect Calendars & Events Support About Search Gerry Teekens, Whose Criss Cross Label Was a Harbor to Several Jazz Generations, Dies at 83 By DAVID R. ADLER • NOV 6, 2019 ! Twitter " Facebook # Google+ $ Email LEO VAN VELZEN / LEOVANVELZEN.COM Gerry Teekens, founder and proprietor of Criss Cross Jazz, an unassuming Dutch indie label that became a vital repository of recorded jazz from the 1980s onward, died on Oct. 31. He was 83. His death was confirmed by his son, Jerry Teekens, Jr. At the news, tributes poured in from Criss Cross artists old and new, including soprano saxophonist Sam Newsome and guitarist David Gilmore. Formerly a professional drummer, Teekens founded Criss Cross in 1981 with a mission to document swinging, straight-ahead jazz of the highest caliber. At first the roster featured musicians as revered as guitarist Jimmy Raney and saxophonist Warne Marsh, but it grew to include the young and the promising: saxophonists Kenny Garrett, Chris Potter and Mark Turner, to name but a few, and pianists Orrin Evans, Bill Charlap and Benny Green. Countdown Watch later Share Multiple times a year, Teekens would cross the ocean from Enschede, Netherlands (thus the Criss Cross name), taking up at Rudy Van Gelder’s famed studio in New Jersey (and later at Systems Two in Brooklyn) for a full week of recording — knocking out an album a day, in the old-school way. In recent years the Criss Cross aesthetic began to broaden, with artists like alto saxophonist David Binney and trumpeter Alex Sipiagin using electronics and synthesizers, moving beyond the strictures of one-take-and-done while still remaining on board with the label.

  • Sammy Figueroa Full
Sammy Figueroa has long been regarded as one of the world’s great musicians. As a much-admired percussionist he provided the rhythmical framework for hundreds of hits and countless recordings. Well-known for his versatility and professionalism, he is equally comfortable in a multitude of styles, from R & B to rock to pop to electronic to bebop to Latin to Brazilian to New Age. But Sammy is much more than a mere accompanist: when Sammy plays percussion he tells a story, taking the listener on a journey, and amazing audiences with both his flamboyant technique and his subtle nuance and phrasing. Sammy Figueroa is now considered to be the most likely candidate to inherit the mantles of Mongo Santamaria and Ray Barretto as one of the world’s great congueros. Sammy Figueroa was born in the Bronx, New York, the son of the well-known romantic singer Charlie Figueroa. His first professional experience came at the age of 18, while attending the University of Puerto Rico, with the band of bassist Bobby Valentin. During this time he co-founded the innovative Brazilian/Latin group Raices, which broke ground for many of today’s fusion bands. Raices was signed to a contract with Atlantic Records and Sammy returned to New York, where he was discovered by the great flautist Herbie Mann. Sammy immediately became one of the music world’s hottest players and within a year he had appeared with John McLaughlin, the Brecker Brothers and many of the world’s most famous pop artists. Since then, in a career spanning over thirty years, Sammy has played with a

  • A Performer's Analysis and Improvisational Guide to Jazz
A PERFORMER’S ANALYSIS AND IMPROVISATIONAL GUIDE TO JAZZ SONATA FOR SOPRANO SAXOPHONE AND PIANO (1994), BY RAMON RICKER (B. 1943) A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate Faculty of the North Dakota State University of Agriculture and Applied Science By Brian Scott Hanegan In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS Major Department: Music August 2017 Fargo, North Dakota North Dakota State University Graduate School Title A PERFORMER’S ANALYSIS AND IMPROVISATIONAL GUIDE TO JAZZ SONATA FOR SOPRANO SAXOPHONE AND PIANO (1994), BY RAMON RICKER (B. 1943) By Brian Scott Hanegan The Supervisory Committee certifies that this disquisition complies with North Dakota State University’s regulations and meets the accepted standards for the degree of DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS SUPERVISORY COMMITTEE: Dr. Matthew Patnode Chair Dr. Cassie Keogh Dr. Tyler Wottrich Dr. Justin Wageman Approved: 10-12-2017 Dr. John Miller Date Department Chair ABSTRACT In the twentieth century, saxophonists are encountering compositions in the repertoire that contain musical elements from both the classical and the jazz idioms. As a result, saxophonists need more technical and improvisational skills to perform these works. Ramon Ricker’s (b. 1943) Jazz Sonata for Soprano Saxophone and Piano (1994) is an example from this repertoire that draws on both of these traditions. This disquisition presents a comprehensive performer’s analysis and improvisational guide to each of the three movements of Ricker’s Jazz Sonata. In chapters 2, 4, and 6, the analysis chapters, I discuss the specific technically challenging elements within each movement. These elements pertain to altered scales, articulations, accents, and polychord harmonies in the first movement (chapter 2); to tuning, interpretation of the melody, subtone, rapid note passages, and swing style in the second movement (chapter 4); and to pitch, technical passages, accents, syncopated melodies, and interpretation of the melody in the third movement (chapter 6).
