Biography Josh Abbott founded the group in 2006 in Lubbock, Texas, while studying at Texas Tech University, where he was a member of the Texas branch of Phi Delta Theta. He founded the group while in graduate school with fraternity brothers Austin Davis, Neil Huey, and Andrew Hurt. The band recorded a demo of four songs, including Taste in 2007 with violinist Preston Waite, and began touring in 2008. Hughie and Hurt have given up their careers, while Preston Waite and Eddie Villanueva have officially joined. The band then recorded their debut album Scapegoat in 2008. Caleb Keeter and James Hertles joined the team in 2010, and Hertless eventually left in 2018. A sophomore album, she appeared in Texas and then in 2010 and entered the charts. Allmusic's Michael Leach praised his four stars out of five, comparing him to Steve Earle and saying Abbott's songwriting showed maturity. They had their first sold-out crowd at Billy Bobs Texas's historic Fort Worth Stockyards on February 10, 2010, selling 6,000 tickets. She's Like Texas includes the single Oh, Tonight, which entered the Country Songs chart in early 2011 #59 and peaked at #44. The song is a duet with Casey Musgraves, a finalist for Season 5 of the Nashville Star and a Universal Music recording artist. The band's third CD, Small Town Family Dream, was released on April 24, 2012. It was their highest album on the charts, debuting at #5 on Top Country Albums, selling 21,000 copies in the U.S. in its first week. The second single, Touch, was released in early February and became available digitally on February 14. His music video includes reality TV star Melissa Rycroft and her husband Ty Strickland, another of Abbott's fraternity brothers. The single was featured in The Longest Ride, based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks. In August 2015, the band announced their fourth studio album, Front Row Seat, a concept album detailing Abbott's relationship and failed marriage. The album's first single, Amnesia, was released in August 2015 with SiriusXM The Highway, the premiere of the lyrical video for the single. Front Row Seat was released on November 6, 2015 and debuted on the Top Country Albums chart at #9, 12,800 copies in the first week. Josh Abbott's single Wasn't That Drunk featuring Karlie Pearce was released on radio on March 21, 2016. The second single from Front Row Seat, Wasn't That Drunk, caught the attention of the national radio and media audience. The band debuted on national television with the single Jimmy Kimmel Live! On May 31, 2016, he performed Amnesia at CONAN on January 18, 2017. On August 18, 2017, the Josh Abbott Band released their fifth studio album, Until My Voice Goes Out, which included a string and a section. The string and horn section were also included in the national while my vote is out the tour. Until My Voice Goes Out is an eclectic album built from Abbott's life experience, from the birth of his daughter to his father's sudden and heartbreaking death a month after the album's creation, all woven together with bright strings and horns.
