Ethnicity in and

The first part of this document will detail the ethnic minority population of Kent and Medway as a whole, showing numbers and percentages of those who are of Asian, Black, Chinese, Eastern European, Mixed and Other White ethnicity in each of the electoral wards in the county.

The following section will look at ethnicity in each Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) within Kent and Medway. Ethnicity is broken down by age group, economic activity, by the percentage of the ethnic minority population born outside of the UK and by the percentage change in ethnic minority population since the Census in 2001.

Map 3 shows that the wards containing the highest numbers of Asians are mainly in the Gravesham, Dartford and Medway areas, as well as Cheriton ward. The ward with the largest percentage population of Asians is Pelham (Dartford LA), with 25%.

The numbers and percentages of ethnic blacks in Kent and Medway are shown in maps 5 and 6. Again, the numbers are concentrated in wards close to in the Dartford and Gravesham Local Authorities. Medway wards also have relatively high numbers of ethnic blacks, as does Blean Forest where the University of Kent is.

Joyce Green in Dartford has the highest percentage of ethnic blacks making up the overall population, with just over 8%. Just over 6% of the populations of Littlebrook, Town (both Dartford LA) and Riverside (Gravesham LA) wards are comprised of ethnic blacks. Four wards have no ethnic blacks; Boughton Monchelsea and Chart Sutton ( LA), Capel-le-Ferne (Dover), , and () and Frittenden and (Tunbridge Wells). Map 5

Map 6

Maps 7 and 8 show the numbers and percentages of ethnic Chinese in the overall population. Map 7 shows a high number of ethnic Chinese in the Canterbury area, and in other wards spread across Kent and Medway. The percentage of ethnic Chinese in the Blean Forest (Canterbury LA) ward is much higher than in other wards in Kent and Medway at nearly 6%. Harbledown (Canterbury LA) has the next highest percentage at nearly 3%. Canterbury also has high percentages of ethnic Chinese in several other wards to the south of Blean Forest.

Cliftonville West (Thanet LA) has the highest percentage of Other White ethnics, at just over 20%, with the next highest ward being Pelham (Gravesham LA) at 13%. Canterbury has a cluster of wards with above 10% of the population comprised of Other White ethnics.

Brief overview of Kent and Medway Ethnicity

Areas with the highest percentage of ethnic minority groups tend to be towards the North side of the county; Dartford, Gravesham and Medway. There are many wards in these areas where the ethnic population is above 10% of the overall population, and in some wards this is over 30%. Canterbury also has fairly high numbers of ethnic minority members, particularly around the University. The South of the County appears to have the lowest percentages of ethnic population; in many wards the figure is less than 5%.

Map 21 shows the electoral wards with the highest percentage of economically inactive ethnics, and they tend to be the wards which contained high numbers of older people. Map 22

The wards with the highest percentage increase in ethnic minority population are mainly those surrounding Ashford town centre. Only one ward has a decrease in ethnic minority population, which is Wye ward.

Canterbury and Coastal CCG

Canterbury and Coastal CCG has the third highest percentage of ethnic minority residents across Kent and Medway at 10.9%. This equates to nearly 22,000 people (Table 5). The following maps (23-27) show the percentage ethnic minorities, split into age bands, resident in Canterbury and Coastal CCG. The age bands used are as follows: 0-15 (children), 16-24 (young adults), 25-64 (adults of working age), 65-74 (older people), and 75+ (elderly people).

Map 27

The above maps show that the younger ethnic population tend to live closer to Canterbury city centre, particularly in the age 16-24 category. This may be due to the student population at the University of Kent. The older population tend to live nearer the coast, in Reculver, Tankerton and Chestfield and Swalecliffe wards.

Tables 8 and 9 detail the numbers and percentages of each ethnic minority group in each of Canterbury and Coastal CCG’s electoral wards.

Map 28 shows the percentage of ethnic minority members who were born outside of the UK. Four wards have over 71% of ethnic minorities born outside of the UK; these wards are mainly centred around the city of Canterbuy, except Boughton and Courtenay Ward. Map 29

The highest percentage of ethnic minority members (above 50%) who are economically inactive again tend to be in the electoral wards surrounding Canterbury; Harbledown, Blean Forest and St Stephens. This may be due to the large numbers of overseas students who attend the University.

Map 30 shows that the greatest percentage increase in ethnic population has occurred in wards close to the city centre; Wincheap, Westgate and Northgate wards, as well as Abbey ward and Marshside ward. Map 30

Dartford, Gravesham and Swanley CCG

Dartford, Gravesham and Swanley CCG has the highest percentage of ethnic minority residents, at 17.4% (Table 5). This equates to just over 46,000 residents of ethnic minority background. The following maps (31-35) show the percentage ethnic minorities, split into age bands, resident in Dartford, Gravesham and Swanley CCG. The age bands used are as follows: 0-15 (children), 16-24 (young adults), 25-64 (adults of working age), 65-74 (older people), and 75+ (elderly people). Map 31

Tables 10 and 11 above detail the numbers and percentages of ethnic minority members who live in each electoral ward.

Map 36 belows shows the percentage of ethnic minority members in each ward who were born outside of the UK. Again, the wards with the higher percentages tend to be the ones which border London; Town, Newtown, Stone, Pelham, Central and Riverside wards all have at least 60% of their ethnic population born outside of the UK. Map 36

Map 37

Map 37 above shows that the wards with the highest percentages (over 33%) of economically inactive ethnic members were Crockenhill and Well Hill, Shorne, Cobham and Luddesdown and Istead Rise wards. These wards all had fairly high percentages of the older ethnic population living in them (maps 34 and 35).

Map 38

The wards with the highest percentage increase in ethnic minority population are those nearest London, with many wards experiencing an increase of over 115%, and in some cases over 180%. These wards also tend to be the ones with the higher rates of the younger ethnic population (Maps 31-33).

Medway CCG

Medway CCG has the second highest percentage (14.1%) of ethnic minority population across Kent and Medway (Table 5), just under 39,000 people. The following maps (39-43) show the percentage ethnic minorities, split into age bands, resident in Medway CCG. The age bands used are as follows: 0-15 (children), 16-24 (young adults), 25-64 (adults of working age), 65-74 (older people), and 75+ (elderly people).

Map 43

The above maps show that the majority of 16-24 year old ethnics live in the River, Gillingham South and Gillingham North wards, close to where the university is. This is opposite to the older population, who are located in the wards towards the outskirts of Medway CCG rather than the centre of it.

Map 44

The wards which contain a high percentage of ethnics who were born outside of the UK are again located around the university area, perhaps representing students who come from overseas to study. The wards with over 65% of ethnics born outside of the UK are River, Gillingham South and Chatham Central.

Map 45 below shows that the two wards with over 37% of ethnic members economically inactive are River and Gillingham North, perhaps due to the student population. Other wards with high levels of economic inactivity among ethnic populations are the ones which contained high levels of older people; such as, Cuxton and Halling, Rainham Central and Rainham South. Map 45

Map 46

Map 46 shows that the following wards have a large percentage increase (over 230%) in ethnic minority population; River, Gillingham North, Gillingham South, Luton and Wayfield and Chatham Central wards.

South Kent Coast CCG

South Kent Coast CCG has the second lowest percentage of ethnic population across Kent and Medway at 8.3% (Table 5). There are just over 16,000 ethnic minority residents in South Kent Coast CCG. The following maps (47-51) show the percentage ethnic minorities, split into age bands, resident in South Kent Coast CCG. The age bands used are as follows: 0-15 (children), 16-24 (young adults), 25-64 (adults of working age), 65-74 (older people), and 75+ (elderly people).

There are high percentages (over 78%) of the ethnic population who were born outside of the UK in a number of the wards in South Kent Coast; St Magaret’s at Cliffe, Town and Pier, Folkestone Harvey Central, Folkestone Cheriton, Hythe East and Folkestone Sandgate. There is a large number of Ghurkas stationed in Folkestone, who have bought their families with them.

Map 53

There is a high percentage of economically inactive ethnics towards the South end of South Kent Coast CCG, and in the Town and Pier and Aylesham wards.

Map 54 shows that many of the wards around Folkestone and Dover have had a large percentage increase in ethnic minority population between 2001 and 2011. Two wards have had a percentage decrease in ethnic population; Lympne and Stanford and Folkestone Sandgate wards. Map 54

Swale CCG

Swale CCG has the lowest percentage of ethnic minority groups across Kent and Medway in the overall population at 7.4% (Table 5). This represents just over 7,000 people. The following maps (55-59) show the percentage ethnic minorities, split into age bands, resident in Swale CCG. The age bands used are as follows: 0-15 (children), 16-24 (young adults), 25- 64 (adults of working age), 65-74 (older people), and 75+ (elderly people). Map 55
