#VIRTUALJANECON

May 1-2, 2021 YouTube #VirtualJaneCon 2021

Welcome! I'm so excited for this year's #VirtualJaneCon, and I am so nervous/excited for you to join in in the festivities.

When I started #VirtualJaneCon last year at the start of the pandemic, I was ready for anything. And you all delivered. I want to thank you all for what you do for this event, but also what you do for each other and the community.

If you've never experienced #VirtualJaneCon, then I hope this year is a great experience for you. It's a community con that is 100% put on by the community, and I hope Jane would be proud.

This year has gotten much bigger, so I did a call for volunteers and people showed up to help. I cannot thank the volunteers enough (and you can see their names at the end of this program) for all they did to make this year bigger and better.

Make sure to follow along on social media for any programming updates/changes and for future #VirtualJaneCon info. And let us know if you want to get involved.

Thank you and enjoy the show! -Bianca Hernandez-Knight (Bookhoarding) How this program works

Bios: “I cannot fix on the hour, or the spot, or the look or the words, which laid the foundation. It is too long ago. I was in the middle before I knew that I had begun.”― Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice

Laura Ingalls Gunn, she/her, cannot recall when her lifelong love of Jane Austen began. Forever with her nose in a book she discovered Sense and Sensibility at 13 while volunteering in the school library. Her eternal devotion was sealed with the watching of the 1995 BBC series of Pride and Prejudice. A few years later she chose to marry her Colonel Brandon. Living overseas she adorned their walls with tarnished looking glasses and set the table with faded transferware collected second hand. Her first visit to Bath required vats of smelling salts to combat the swooning. Upon returning to the states she began sharing her love of all things Austen in March of 2008 on the website Decor To Adore. In 2015 she made her first Regency dress out of a sheet and tablecloth. She slightly cringes that the accompanying bonnet, created from a modern sunhat, has now been pinned well over 20,000 times. Still, she remains devoted to the notion that it is better to begin somehow than not at all. Programming - May 1

Description: After her death, Jane's sister Cassandra wrote to their niece that Jane was the “gilder of every pleasure,” a true best friend. But what of Cassandra’s life after that tragic loss?

Both Cassandra Austen and her mother – another Cassandra who lost a sister named Jane – would have found themselves without a companion whose wittiness, society, and friendship must have brought them great joy.

Austen drops hints throughout her texts of the nature of life after the loss of a sister: seeks solace in letters from her niece Jane Fairfax, a replacement for her sister Jane who died years before, and would have likely brought much needed comfort and companionship to her life. In Sense and Sensibility, we watch as Elinor struggles with the possible loss of Marianne; and even the steadfast and sensible Captain Harville can barely speak of his grief over a sister he loved and lost too soon.

We know from historical records that the two Cassandras – mother and daughter – lived many years together after Jane Austen died. Can we assume that her portrait of life after the loss of a sisterly companion is predictive of their future? What other female relationships did Austen model, in her life and her works, and why are they so significant to modern readers?

Wealthy Black Britons in High Society: Comparing Jane Austen's Sanditon (1817) and Alicia Le Fanu's Fashionable Connexions (1823) Time: 3 am May 2/AEST 2 am May 2 KST/10:30 pm IST/6 PM BST/1 pm EDT/12 pm CST/10 am PDT Channel: Lydia Craig- https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcn6j1G5e8C_vnIlCzHh4ag

Description: This film compares Austen's unfinished portrait of the heiress Miss Lambe in Sanditon (1817) to the characterization of the Tornado family, wealthy heirs and heiresses with African ancestry who appear in a lengthy subplot of Fashionable Connexions (1823) by Irish immigrant Alicia Le Fanu. Recently discovering this fascinating novel, (and currently working on an edition), I now reveal that Austen and Le Fanu both witnessed and responded to the same wave of Black immigration to England. Because Austen's novel was cut short by her death, readers are unable to view the wealthy and delicate Miss Lambe's reception in high society; however, Le Fanu's novel provides clues as to how Austen might have portrayed Miss Lambe's social experience in the seaside town of Sanditon. On several occasions, despite their wealth and impressive educations, the Creole Mr. Tornado and his fully Black half-sisters Theodora and Mariamne Tornado are openly discriminated against by racist aristocrats Squire Birkit and Amelia De Ross. Ultimately, Mr. Tornado establishes himself in London with a new bride, and the confident Tornado sisters manage to respectively marry into the elite and British aristocracy, Le Fanu's contemporary acknowledgement of what is now a deliberately "hidden" Black history in the UK. In conclusion, I briefly point to various historical and literary resources on Black Britons and interracial marriage in the Regency and late Georgian eras that are of interest (articles, books, online archives and databases). Description: This presentation will discuss the arguments for and against the question of whether George Knightley groomed in Jane Austen’s novel Emma. The practice of grooming will be defined according the the UK’s National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC), and the presenter will cite examples from the text as well as examples from Austen’s other works, works written contemporaneously, various scholarship, and some examples from modern historical fiction literature and other media.

The presentation will give historical context surrounding marriage and the relative societal freedoms of men and women in 1815 as well as detail the reactions that modern readers have to the age gaps in the relationships of Austen’s heroes and heroines. In particular, the phenomenon of modern readers reacting more strongly to the age gap between Emma and George will be discussed alongside the reactions to the greater age gap between Marianne and Colonel Brandon in Sense and Sensibility, the largest difference in age in Austen’s novels.

Description: In this image-rich talk, Devoney Looser starts with the big picture, looking at the hundreds of novelists who were actively publishing in the era we now call Austen's. Then Looser gives a reading from her forthcoming biography, Sister Novelists: Jane and Anna Maria Porter in the Age of Austen (Bloomsbury, 2022), She’ll share the story of the celebrated Jane and Anna Maria Porter's 1821 visit to Carlton House, the London residence of King George IV. As well-informed Janeites know, Austen visited Carlton House under similar circumstances six years earlier, although she didn’t leave a record of her experience there. Jane Porter did. The Porter sisters’ invitation to tour Carlton House with royal librarian James Stanier Clarke changed the course of their careers. After watching this lecture, you'll leave with a deeper sense of Jane Austen’s and Jane Porter’s royal dedications, as well as how and why women writers of this era were hustling, as they jockeyed for endorsements, readers, and sales.

Austen and the Rom-Com, AKA Should We Blame It on Mr. Darcy? Time: 6 am AEST (May 2)/5 am KST (May 2)/1:30 am IST (May 2)/9 PM BST/4 pm EDT /3 pm CDT/1 p.m. PDT Channel: Amanda Prahl- https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC54sSQhOJfxzjmcN16Z3uVg

Description: A discussion of how Austen frequently gets lumped in with romance/rom-com in popular discourse. It’s true in some ways – including a few unexpected parallels – but to lump the two together misses the whole point. We'll talk through how the elements of a romantic comedy don't always match up with Austen's priorities (it's a Venn diagram, not a circle), from the perspective of structure, craft, and required elements.

So, really, why is there the perception that Austen = rom com and the insistence on comparing everything romantic to Austen? And, in turn, how does that influence how we adapt Austen and what we choose to focus on?

As an assistant professor of English at an HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities), Dr. Emily M.N. Kugler ("Emily") introduces Howard University students to Jane Austen as a key author in the study of women writers and readers in the Atlantic World. In her classes, Austen is read alongside the works of abolitionist activists, Caribbean novelists, and present-day consumer culture. Dr. Kugler's current research includes Austen's relationship with publishers and representations of the navy within a larger project about eighteenth- and nineteenth-century white, Black and indigenous women as writers and readers in the British empire. During the pandemic, she is frequently found online, playing video games and Dungeons & Dragons with Dr. Friedman.

Em & Emily are working on a series of articles related to their Playing the 18th Century project, experimenting with different formats (Twine storytelling, Twitch streaming, workshops) to share their research on Austen-inspired games. Programming - May 2
