    What Took You So Long, Jerrie Mock? A learning game for high school students from the Columbus Council on World Affairs with support from the Lindorf Family Foundation Introduction for Teachers What Took You so Long? is a game based on the 1964 flights of Newark, Ohio native, Jerrie Mock, and Joan Merriam Smith of Long Beach, California. Though they were not officially racing they were both eager to be the first woman to pilot a plane around the world. By 1964 men had already orbited the earth in outer space and it had been 27 years since Amelia Earhart’s attempt to circle the globe with her navigator, Fred Noonan. Still, no woman had ever piloted an airplane around the world. The title of the simulation also refers to the many phone calls and cables Jerrie Mock received from her husband along the way urging her to proceed with haste even when it wasn’t feasible or safe.     Earhart's Final Resting Place Believed Found Legendary aviatrix Amelia Earhart most likely died on an uninhabited tropical island in the southwestern Pacific republic of Kiribati, according to researchers at The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR). Tall, slender, blonde and brave, Earhart disappeared while flying over the Pacific Ocean on July 2, 1937 in a record attempt to fly around the world at the equator. Her final resting place has long been a mystery. For years, Richard Gillespie, TIGHAR's executive director and author of the book "Finding Amelia," and his crew have been searching the Nikumaroro island for evidence of Earhart. A tiny coral atoll, Nikumaroro was some 300 miles southeast of Earhart's target destination, Howland Island. A number of artifacts recovered by TIGHAR would suggest that Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, made a forced landing on the island's smooth, flat coral reef. According to Gillespie, who is set to embark on a new $500,000 Nikumaroro expedition next summer, the two became castaways and eventually died there. "We know that in 1940 British Colonial Service officer Gerald Gallagher recovered a partial skeleton of a castaway on Nikumaroro. Unfortunately, those bones have now been lost," Gillespie said. The archival record by Gallagher suggests that the bones were found in a remote area of the island, in a place that was unlikely to have been seen during an aerial search. A woman's shoe, an empty bottle and a sextant box whose serial numbers are consistent with a type known to have been carried by Noonan were all found near the site where the bones were discovered.

But Amelia’s mom didn’t want her girls to just follow the rules other people made. Amelia’s mom wanted her girls to have adventures. Amelia and Pidge liked to climb trees. They also hunted rats and loved to go sledding down snowy hills. These were not things girls were supposed to do. One day Amelia and her uncle made a wooden ramp, kind of like a roller coaster. Amelia rode down the ramp in a wooden box. The wooden box crashed and broke. Amelia’s lip was bruised but she was so excited. She shouted, “Oh, Pidge, it’s just like flying!” When Amelia was in high school, her family moved to Chicago. Amelia went to Hyde Park High School and took lots of science classes. After she finished school she wanted to find a job. She kept a scrapbook of newspaper articles about women who had interesting jobs. She liked some of the jobs that men did. She thought those were more exciting. After Amelia finished high school, airplanes were still new.
