2007-08 VMI BASKETBALL KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES VMI Begins In-State Big South Road Swing at Radford Keydets Seeking Out Revenge for Overtime Loss at Cameron Hall Against Highlanders Keydets Last Time Out: The Winthrop Eagles placed five in double-figures scoring and held VMI to 37% shooting from the floor in an 80-70 win over VMI Wednesday night at Cameron Hall. VMI saw its three-game conference winning streak snapped and fell to 13-12, 5-6 Big South Conference. Winthrop claimed its ninth straight in the series and won its fourth straight conference game, moving to 18-9 and 9-3 in the Big South. VMI (13-112, 5-66 Big South) at Two significant records fell on the night as VMI senior forward Reggie Williams scored 27 points and moved past Gay Elmore Radford (9-117, 3-77 Big South) (1983-87) for the top spot on the VMI career scoring list. Now with 2,430 points, Williams surpassed Elmore’s 2,423 points. Winthrop senior guard Chris Gaynor became the Big South’s all-time steals leader registering eight thefts against the Keydets to Saturday, Feb. 23; 4 p.m. move past Campbell’s Brad Childress (243). Gaynor now has 246 for his career. Williams, who was selected as one of 50 preseason nominees for the John Wooden Award, ranks second in the INTERNET- Live Audio and Stats nation in scoring with 27.1 points per contest entering Friday’s play. Williams, who was also voted to the Big South Conference’s online at www.VMIKeydets.com. Preseason All-Conference team, is also the leading scorer in Big South history, while topping both the VMI and Big South scoring average charts at 22.5 ppg for his career. Williams has also scored in double-figures in 46 straight games, the third-longest streak in school history. TELEVISION- The contest will be carried on MASN. Junior guard Chavis Holmes became the 32nd member of VMI’s 1000-point club earlier this season, while his twin brother Travis joined him in the club just a month later. The Holmes’ are the fourth set of twins to each reach 1,000 points in NCAA Division I history, Tale Of The Tape joining VMI’s Damon and Ramon Williams on the prestigious list. Chavis currently sits at 16th on the VMI career scoring chart with VMI RU 1,284 points, while Travis ranks 20th with 1,180 career points. They sit as the fifth-highest scoring set of twins in NCAA Division I histo- ry, currently with 2,464 points, after passing Jarvis and Jonas Hayes (2,460 pts.) against Winthrop.
