Page three CONVENOR’S REPORT 2014/2015

At the start of my report last year I spoke of a wind of change that was blowing through the land. That wind continues unabated. Elections have been fought and won, and although there have been significant changes in the political landscape, the Crichton continues to attract attention and investment both from within the academic institutions on Campus and beyond. In its turn the Foundation continues to provide support for both the students and their colleges. Over the last year we have awarded grants to a record number of students, over one hundred in all.

One of the Foundation’s more significant accomplishments this year was the establishment of the Dame Barbara Kelly Fellowship. This prestigious award fully supports a doctoral studentship over three years. The successful candidate from a large field of excellent applicants was Professor David Clark of Glasgow University, who has chosen to award the Fellowship to Jacqueline Kandsberger, a Glasgow graduate. She will be commencing her PhD later in the year, undertaking research on aspects of end of life care.

As academic institutions mature links develop with other bodies and I am pleased to report that following a visit in January from the Master of Balliol College, Oxford, Sir Drummond Bone, a Balliol/Glasgow (Crichton) Fellowship in Interdisciplinary Studies is planned and the Foundation will be proud to sponsor this for the next ten years.

Neither of these awards or our other grants would be possible without the hard work and dedication of a large number of superb fund raising volunteers. The Gala Committee, chaired by Stevie Norris, put on a wonderful event in November. The Gatsby Glamour Gala had a jazz theme, attracted a big crowd, including very gratifyingly a large number of younger supporters. Sybelle Thomson ran a very successful auction which rounded off a lovely evening. Vicky Jardine Paterson, with her committee, continues to organise the Dumfries and Galloway Women’s Lunch. This year nearly four hundred attended, a record, and again there were many disappointed applicants. This year’s speakers were Victoria Stapleton, founder of the very successful knitwear company Brora, and Dr Brooke Magnanti, best known for writing about her experiences as a London call girl. Both were very well received and it was gratifying that the Women’s Lunch and the Gala contributed very significant funds to the Foundation.

The Founder’s Day Lunch, held in June 2014, was special in that we were able to thank Dame Barbara for all she has done for the Foundation over many years. The Board’s decision to establish the aforementioned Dame Barbara Kelly Fellowship was announced. Sir Kenneth Calman then delivered the Henry Duncan Lecture on the interesting subject of happiness and the part it plays in our wellbeing.

The Crichton Conversations have become part of our local culture. They continue to attract high quality speakers from across a wide range of disciplines. This year’s contributors were superb and I am hugely grateful to Barbara for continuing to pull in stars from all over the country to provide us with a showcase which aims to draw the population of Dumfries and Galloway to the Crichton.

I firmly believe that the Foundation can contribute to the wellbeing and advancement of the Crichton Quarter in ways other than simply providing financial support. We have an important presence on the Crichton Campus Leadership Group and as a member of the Creative Mix I believe that we can help to shape future developments.

Once more I am delighted to thank a number of very important people. Our office bearers and Trustees give so very much, without reward, and ensure that all business is conducted properly. Kirsty Barbour and Pam Stokes run the Foundation immaculately, and Sue Howes manages our finances with absolute professionalism. To them I am hugely grateful. And again I want to thank all of you, Patrons, Friends, Members and supporters for your continuing help. The Foundation is extremely grateful to you all.

A successful series of seven Crichton Conversations lectures ran from August 2014 to March 2015. These were delivered by high profi le speakers on a range of contemporary topics.

The Crichton Conversations programme continues to play an important part in maintaining the links between the Crichton and the wider community. These events attract signifi cant audiences with over 700 people attending the series, including a growing number of students. Sponsorship helps to keep the costs of attendance to a minimum whilst making sure that overall income from the series covers expenditure.

The Foundation is very grateful to the sponsors for all of our events: Armstrong Watson, Brewin Dolphin, Crichton Carbon Centre, Crichton Development Company, the Crichton Institute, the Open University in Scotland, Scotland’s Rural College, the Solway Centre, the University of Glasgow, the University of the West of Scotland and anonymous donors.

Gatsby Glamour at the Crichton Gala Evening

Gala Committee 2014 Photo: Allan Devlin On Friday 7th November 2014 the Foundation hosted the Gatsby Glamour Gala. Over 200 guests enjoyed fizz, fine food and fabulous music with a glamourous Gatsby theme. Fraser Clark, a local pianist, played a selection of jazz pieces throughout dinner, this set the mood for the entertainment to follow. After a candle lit three course meal guests were entertained by the talents of the Society Syncopators Dance Orchestra led by Roy Percy. As well as the authentic British and American Dance Band Music from the ‘20s and ‘30s guests were encouraged to the dance floor by the youthfully enthusiastic demonstrations of contemporaneous footwork by dancers led by Jenn Gamracy. A raffle and auction added to the evening’s entertainment with prizes including fine dining experiences, artworks and a villa in Portugal to be won. The event was organised by the Committee of enthusiastic volunteers led by Stevie Norris. The evening was held at the Easterbrook Hall and proved to be a great success generating a fundraising profit of £12,191. The Foundation is grateful to the many donors who supported the auction and raffle and who took advertising in the programme. Our thanks also go to Sybelle Thomson who kindly acted as our Auctioneer.

Women of Dumfries and Galloway Lunch

The Women of Dumfries and Galloway Lunch took place on Friday 20th March 2014. Chairman Vicky Jardine-Paterson was delighted to welcome a record audience of 380 guests. This event remains hugely popular and once again tickets were sold out within a week of going on sale. After a glass of fizz and a two course lunch the speakers were welcomed to the stage. Victoria Stapleton took guests on a fascinating journey starting with her father’s careers advice through the humble beginnings of the Brora name to the New York opening. Dr Brooke Magnanti then regaled guests with the very different story of her journey from postgraduate student to child health scientist via her work as a London call girl. Bonham’s once again provided generous support as the main sponsor. The Foundation offers them its grateful thanks for their support. The many businesses that took advertising within the event programme and donations from businesses and individuals helped to ensure the success of the event which raised £11,647. Our thanks also go to the Women’s Lunch Committee under the Chairmanship of Vicky Jardine-Paterson.

Elizabeth Crichton Founder’s Day Lunch and Henry Duncan Memorial Lecture This event was held on 5th June 2014. Guests enjoyed a two-course lunch hosted by our Trustees. The event is a way of connecting with the local business community and allows us to recognise and thank our many donors and friends for their support over the year. The Foundation is grateful to main sponsors Lloyds Banking Group and our other sponsors for their generous support which makes the event possible. DUMFRIES AND GALLOWAY COLLEGE Awards: It’s been a very positive year with Dumfries and Galloway College (DAGCOL) in the running for a number of awards. DAGCOL was shortlisted in the EAUC (Green Gown); Scottish Qualifi cations Authority Star and College Development Network’s Annual Awards for projects and work with students. The Marketing Team won silver at the FE First Marketing Awards for Event Management and DAGCOL was part of the Scottish Power Energy Network Submission at the National Utility Achievement Awards ceremony held in London. The Marketing team also received Bronze at the College Development Network Awards ceremony. Employer Advisory Boards: Two Employer Advisory Boards events were held in November 2014 and January 2015, and there was an excellent turnout. The enthusiasm of the businesses to become involved was extremely encouraging. Developing Scotland’s Young Workforce: Individual visits with secondary schools across the region were held to explore opportunities to work together on delivering some of the key recommendations in Developing Scotland’s Young Workforce report. These visits have been encouraging as the College is expecting a 33% increase in pupils enrolling on College programmes in 2015-16 and further developments for 2016-17. Dumfries and Galloway Secondary School Head Teachers conference was hosted by the College in March. This was attended by 40-50 senior staff from schools and one of the sessions focussed on developing school/college links. Growth: Scottish Funding Council have offered 1% growth in activity targets for 2015-16 and an allocation of ESF funding (Youth Employment Initiative). Together this equates to the equivalent of 130 additional full- time FE places, although there is fl exibility in how this is used. The additional activity has been accepted however, Dumfries Campus is now operating at full capacity and it will be diffi cult to accommodate any further growth without enhancements to the estates. Learner Activities: A series of events were organised by learners to showcase the wide and varied number of projects they involved themselves in as part of citizenship week. This included the Prince Trust team participating in a dementia workshop before visiting care homes to assist the residents in tidying up and planting their gardens. Dumfries Construction learners helped to clear the grounds at Moat Brae House, and Stranraer Construction learners built some outdoor furniture for Par Primary School. Many other fund raising activities took place across all curriculum areas of the College. Hospitality learners from Stranraer campus had an exciting evening cooking at the Scottish Parliament Members restaurant. They used local produce, helping to showcase the rich and diverse food selection from across the region.
