2014 Fall Career Fair Summary

Executive Summary: This year was the 32nd annual Fall Career Fair and the first time to host the event outside the Murphy Center. Because of Murphy Center renovations, the Fall Career Fair was held in the New Student Union Building. This, in essence, made it an entirely new event.

Some major changes in the fair included:  Moving the event later in October.  Hosting employers in the ballroom and graduate and professional schools in the atrium.  Moving it to an afternoon only format and not providing an employer lunch.  Duration of event reduced from 4 hours to 3 hours.  Parking employers on the edge of campus and shuttling to the venue.  Limiting the number of employers and graduate and professional schools who could register due to venue capacity.  Tracking only students and alumni attending the employer fair in the ballroom; not students attending graduate and professional schools in the atrium. Overall, the new venue was very well received by the employers and graduate/professional schools. This combined with a 21.7% increase in student attendance resulted in an increase in favorable responses to many questions on the employer survey. The least favorable responses involved parking and room layout.

We did not find out until after registration had closed that the venue could hold more employers than we had anticipated. We had a wait list of over 25 employers and were able to get some to attend.

Employer Comments:

 "Tables reconfigured." - 21st Mortgage  "Time of day was perfect! Awesome staff. Many students didn't have resume." - Buckle  "It was difficult to transport the display on the bus-very tight quarters with all the other employers. Students were not dressed professionally and could use some direction." - Cintas 2014 Career Fair Summary Page 8 of 19

 "Another great career fair! Could have used more time to get more and more students in. Great students at MTSU and the more time the merrier for us!" - Fastenal  "Students-write major under their name." - Passport-Experian Health  "Disappointed w/ table space as a sponsor. Would have appreciated double tables for all sponsors. Also, better visibility of "sponsor row" with perhaps some balloons, etc. Excellent sponsor parking perk and great arrival assistance." - Sam's Club  "The location and length of event was great! Thank you for the opportunity." - SMX Staffing Co.  "There was a poor turnout by construction students. We will probably focus on department specific events from now on. Also, would be very helpful for students to have majors listed on nametags (or color-coded)." - Structural Group  "Thanks for the assistance with unloading my display for my table. Appreciated the emails concerning parking and the shuttle bus. It was a good day!" - TN Dept of Audit  "Parking-closer location was better last year in arena." - TQL  "I am a medical recruiter, not a single student was medical. Wish we had known there would be none. When I arrived my table was being used by a multitude of exhibitors to eat their lunches. No sign, no water." - U.S. Army  "Absolutely fantastic. Students were really well-prepared!" - UBS  "Students need majors on name tag. What class are they?" - United Health Group  "Feedback for students. Students are not well versed in being able to start the conversation about themselves. They just ask, “What do you have?” versus telling us about them. Avoid saying just any job." - Walgreens  "Better signs for parking."  "Change the rows of the booths. Have the back of the booths meet, more effective."  "It felt a little cluttered, maybe have the employers line the outside of the room/get a bigger space."  "Keep the event in this room next year! Educate students on how to dress appropriately when meeting potential employers."  "Love the time of the event."  "Love this location over the Arena BUT should have tables facing each other vs. all one direction. Very awkward staring at the backs of other companies. Also, students not dressed appropriately."  "More time."  "Parking signs were too small."  "Parking!"  "Really great event! Wish I could specify that I'm looking for interns versus full-time employees on info given to students. Thank you!"

Graduate and Professional School Comments:

 "Loved being in front of the food court. Lots of traffic." - University of Memphis  "Drop off at the door for materials would be appreciated. Student hosts were super! Appreciative of advisors and faculty that came by too!" - Lipscomb Pharmacy  "It would be nice to have the grad school recruitment/health care recruitment be an event on a separate day from the career fair."  "Might want to put refreshments for reps in a more secure place. Pleased to see graduate and professionals schools separated from employers. Beautiful student union." - Memphis Law School  "We would prefer to be in the same location as the employers in order to get more student traffic." - Freed- Hardeman University  "Separating grad and businesses sounds like a great idea but it was dead downstairs the entire time. Of course students are looking for jobs right now and not more debt so they are not going to come down here. We should be up there at least in the hallway with them if not in the same room with them." - Lipscomb University
