  • Masculinity in Emo Music a Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Arts and Social Science in Candi
CARLETON UNIVERSITY FLUID BODIES: MASCULINITY IN EMO MUSIC A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCE IN CANDIDACY FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC BY RYAN MACK OTTAWA, ONTARIO MAY 2014 ABSTRACT Emo is a genre of music that typically involves male performers, which evolved out of the punk and hardcore movements in Washington DC during the mid-80s. Scholarly literature on emo has explored its cultural and social contexts in relation to the “crisis” of masculinity—the challenging of the legitimacy of patriarchy through “alternative” forms of masculinity. This thesis builds upon this pioneering work but departs from its perpetuation of strict masculine binaries by conflating hegemonic and subordinate/alternative masculinities into a single subject position, which I call synergistic masculinity. In doing so, I use emo to explicate this vis-à-vis an intertextual analysis that explores the dominant themes in 1) lyrics; 2) the sites of vocal production (head, throat, chest) in conjunction with pitch and timbre; 3) the extensional and intensional intervallic relationships between notes and chords, and the use of dynamics in the musical syntax; 4) the use of public and private spaces, as well as the performative masculine body in music video. I posit that masculine emo performers dissolve these hierarchically organized masculinities, which allows for a deeper musical meaning and the extramusical signification of masculinity. Keywords: emo, synergistic masculinity, performativity, music video, masculinities, lyrics, vocal production, musical syntax, dynamics. ABSTRAIT Emo est un genre musical qui implique typiquement des musiciens de sexe masculine et qui est issu de movement punk et hardcore originaire de Washington DC durant les années 80.

  • Come the Foxes"
Come the Foxes" From the Book West to Cambodia by S. L. A. Marshall The Battery Press, Inc. PO Box 3107, Uptown Station, Nashville Station, TN 37219 "Come the Foxes" When the company started its long march at 0800, moving northeast from Hill 637 in the hope of bivouacking at Hill 292, all hands were content with one thing—the man on the point for Second Platoon. That was a phenomenon compounded, because the point man is the eyes, ears, and nose of an infantry column thrusting into enemy country; if his senses fail, so may the unit. Yet Spec. 4 David E. McLemore, age 19, had been with the company only five weeks. More about him later. The unit was Charley Company, Second Battalion of the 35th Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, under command of Capt. Michael R. Tryon, age 25. The day was 28 October, 1966, and it turned out to be hot and fair, a dazzling sun boosting the temperature above 80 before mid-morning, with not one cloud appearing in the sky thereafter. The scene was the western Central Highlands. The march, should one wish to be technical about it, was to extend from coordinate YA 778-567 to coordinate 796-597 on the same map sheet. It was very rough country—straight-faced, slab-sided hills for the most part, with interspersed jungle patches, the canopy of which occasionally rose to 70 feet, the undergrowth so dense that the column front had to hack its way through, though there was little bamboo and no bamboozles (great snarled clumps of the stuff at ground level) whatever.

The label was responsible for popularizing the pop-punk/emo sound of the early to mid-2000s. After facing financial obstacles in getting their bands' music into stores, Drive-Thru entered into a distribution deal with MCA/Universal. MCA was dissolved and changed into Geffen Records. One of the clauses of that agreement was MCA/Geffen being able to sign any band of their choosing from Drive-Thru's roster. Once the Universal deal ended, they signed a contract with independent label Sanctuary Records. Starting with a new roster, the label garnered a top 10 platinum hit with "Here In Your Arms" by the Hellogoodbye. However, Sanctuary was on the verge of bankruptcy, and sold their assets to Universal Music. Drive-Thru Records got trapped in that deal, and were stuck with UMD, the catalog division of Universal. The label's last release was in 2008, when Richard and Stefanie Reines decided to concentrate on artist management and put Drive-Thru Records on indefinite hiatus.

  • 1 East and West Poems by Bret Harte
1 EAST AND WEST POEMS BY BRET HARTE PART I. A GREYPORT LEGEND. (1797.) They ran through the streets of the seaport town; They peered from the decks of the ships that lay: The cold sea-fog that came whitening down Was never as cold or white as they. "Ho, Starbuck and Pinckney and Tenterden! Run for your shallops, gather your men, Scatter your boats on the lower bay." Good cause for fear! In the thick midday The hulk that lay by the rotting pier, Filled with the children in happy play, Parted its moorings, and drifted clear,— Drifted clear beyond the reach or call,— Thirteen children they were in all,— All adrift in the lower bay! Said a hard-faced skipper, "God help us all! She will not float till the turning tide!" Said his wife, "My darling will hear my call, Whether in sea or heaven she bide:" And she lifted a quavering voice and high, Wild and strange as a sea-bird's cry, Till they shuddered and wondered at her side. The fog drove down on each laboring crew, Veiled each from each and the sky and shore: There was not a sound but the breath they drew, And the lap of water and creak of oar; And they felt the breath of the downs, fresh blown O'er leagues of clover and cold gray stone, But not from the lips that had gone before. They come no more. But they tell the tale, That, when fogs are thick on the harbor reef, The mackerel fishers shorten sail; For the signal they know will bring relief: For the voices of children, still at play In a phantom hulk that drifts alway Through channels whose waters never fail.

SURFING FOR PUNKS: THE INTERNET AND THE PUNK SUBCULTURE IN NEW JERSEY by AARON ROBERT FURGASON A Dissertation submitted to the Graduate School-New Brunswick Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Program in Communication, Information and Library Studies written under the direction of Professor Linda Steiner And approved by ________________________________ ________________________________ ________________________________ ________________________________ New Brunswick, New Jersey October, 2008 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION SURFING FOR PUNKS: THE INTERNET AND THE PUNK SUBCULTURE IN NEW JERSEY BY AARON ROBERT FURGASON Dissertation Director Professor Linda Steiner This study examines the influence of the Internet on the punk subculture in New Jersey. Previous research by academics on the effect of the Internet on popular music has centered on the impact of Napster and peer-to-peer networks on the distribution of recordings (Alexander, 2002; Ayres & Williams, 2004; Bishop, 2004; Daniel & Klimis, 1999; Fox, 2004; Mardesich, 1999; & Oberholzer & Strumpf, 2004). However, unexamined is the influence of the Internet on a specific music subculture, punk. This is important because the subculture is occupied mainly by youth engaged with both the Internet and punk music. The Internet's influence on the punk subculture is a particularly important area of study because the Internet alters how participants in the subculture (punk fans, bands and independent labels) communicate with one another, as well as changes the distribution of punk artifacts and information. ii Central to this study is the history of the major labels' dominance over the distribution and promotion of punk music, a domination examined via critical political economy theory.
