  • GATHER at 21C MUSEUM HOTEL LOUISVILLE
    LOUISVILLE THE STORY OF 21c MUSEUM HOTELS BEGINS WITH 21c LOUISVILLE Laura Lee Brown and Steve Wilson, native Kentuckians, sought to marry their passion for contemporary art with a desire to make a considerable contribution toward revitalization efforts in downtown Louisville. Their bold decision to open a contemporary art museum open to the public free of charge, and to combine it with Louisville’s first boutique hotel created both an economic driver for the community and an oasis where art challenges, amuses, stimulates conversation and provokes new ideas. Brown and Wilson partnered with New York-based architect Deborah Berke to reimagine a series of five deteriorating 19th century buildings along Louisville’s West Main Street, with a design that highlighted the original brick, timber and cast iron construction. The result was 21c Museum Hotel, a 91-room boutique hotel with 9,000 square feet of exhibition space and Proof on Main, an award- winning restaurant featuring locally and sustainably raised foods. The property opened in March 2006. With the success of the Louisville property came opportunities for expansion. Brown and Wilson founded 21c Museum Hotels in 2007 to oversee the expansion and management of 21c nationally. With strong local partners who share the belief that art can be an economic driver for a community, 21c is expanding to new cities throughout the country. 21c’s growth and expansion presents the opportunity to share Brown and Wilson’s original goals – to collect and exhibit the work of living artists and to integrate contemporary art into daily life – in new cities. These goals, as well as a desire to bring today’s most dynamic and engaging art to the public, have been Brown and Wilson’s mission, one that has helped transform downtown Louisville into an internationally recognized cultural center.

    The Mint Museum’s new four-story window installation Foragers offers a transcendent experience while celebrating the female workers and makers that helped shape NC FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 10, 2020, Charlotte, NC — Unlike anything ever seen at The Mint Museum before, Brooklyn-based artist Summer Wheat’s Foragers is a monumental piece of public artwork spanning four stories and 3,720 square feet at Mint Museum Uptown’s Robert Haywood Morrison Atrium. A myriad of vibrant panels giving the illusion of stained glass fill the atrium’s 96 windows and weave a story of the people and workforce that have made Charlotte a thriving metropolis. “In so many ways, Foragers is a monumental tribute to all those anonymous female makers and laborers who have made North Carolina the place that it is today: the Catawba clay workers, the Cherokee basket makers, the enslaved and freed African-American fishers and farmers, the countless woodworkers, weavers, and quilters,” says Jen Sudul Edwards, PhD, the Mint’s chief curator and curator of contemporary art. Foragers will be on view when The Mint Museum re-opens to the public Sept. 25 and will remain on view through Sept. 6, 2022. Foragers is part of a larger exhibition, In Vivid Color, opening Oct. 16, which brings together four innovative contemporary artists— Wheat, Gisela Colon, Spencer Finch, and Jennifer Steinkamp—who create works celebrating the power of color and its ability to permeate the space around us. Their work is juxtaposed with a selection of paintings and works on paper, drawn primarily from The Mint Museum’s permanent collection, which showcase artists’ more traditional exploration of color.
