LOUIS -- The 2019 MVC Larry Bird Player of the Year is senior Marques Townes of regular-season co-champion Loyola. Townes has led the Ramblers to back-to-back regular-season titles for the first time in program history. In league play, he topped the MVC with 18.1 points per game and ranked third with 3.1 assists per game. His 107 assists for the season led the Ramblers as did his 15.9 scoring average. He's the second-straight Rambler to win the league's top honor (Clayton Custer won last year.) Townes received 110 total points to edge Nick McGlynn of Drake (95 points) and teammate Cameron Krutwig (45 points). Five different student-athletes received first-place tallies, including Townes, McGlynn, Krutwig, Tulio Da Silva of Missouri State and Phil Fayne of Illinois State -- each was named to the league's First Team. The voting for the Bird Trophy recipient was the closest since 2010 when Adam Koch of UNI edged runnerup Dinma Odiakosa of Illinois State by 13 points. Townes and Krutwig, 2019 MVC Larry Bird Trophy Voting meanwhile, became the fifth pair of teammates in the past six seasons to finish in the Top 3 of the balloting. Men’s Basketball 1818 Chouteau Ave. • St. Louis, MO 63103 • (314) 444-4300 March 1, 2018 • For Immediate Release • Contact: Mike Kern MVC ANNOUNCES 2018 MEN’S BASKETBALL SCHOLAR-ATHLETE TEAMS Reed Timmer / Clayton Custer are Recipients of Enterprise Bank and Trust Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award ST. LOUIS -- Clayton Custer of Loyola and Reed Timmer of Drake highlight a list of 15 student-athletes honored as part of the 2018 MVC Scholar-Athlete Teams, announced today by the league office. For the first time in league history, two student-athletes share the top honor as both are being recognized as the MVC Enterprise Bank and Trust Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Voting for the 2018 MVC Scholar-Athlete Team was conducted by league’s sports information directors. Timmer is the first in league history to win the league’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award three times (three others have won it twice.) And Custer, who earlier this week was named the Larry Bird Trophy winner, is the fourth MVC Player of the Year to win the league’s top athletic honor and top academic honor (joining Jamaal Tatum of Southern Illinois in 2007; Adam Emmenecker of Drake in 2008; and Adam Koch of UNI in 2010). Timmer leads Drake in scoring and is second in the MVC with 19.6 points per game. Earlier this season he became Drake’s all-time leading scorer. Custer, meanwhile, is also his team’s top scorer, and he ranks in the Top 10 in scoring, field goal percentage, assists, assist:turnover ratio, free throw percentage, steals, three-point field goal percentage, three-pointers made per game and minutes played.

  • Mid-Major Study, Issue XVIII
Issue XVII, Vol. VIII Mid-Major Study WAKE FOREST, N.C. – The goal of this undertaking was to pull back the curtain on the best mid-major players and achieve a sense of what made them successful and why/how they flew under the radar. One can argue – and in many cases correctly – that these players were successful because they picked the proper level to maximize their talents. While that argument has great merit, it’s not the purpose of this study. Drew Cannon, my summer intern, took up this project and is responsible for the hard data and the conclusions that have been drawn. His diligence and hard work represent the bulk of this study. My focus was to keep him on task and help guide him as he navigated the waters. We sincerely hope that you get as much out of this as we did. It’s food for thought as you continue to build your program and succeed in recruiting. In order to gather the information, we had to identify a pool of candidates. First-team all- conference players from the Colonial, Missouri Valley and Atlantic-10 were used to form the subject pool. Cannon interviewed the high school coaches of 32 of the 39 all-league players. “The first point to be made about any mid-major first-teamer is that they need to meet two qualifications. The player has to be good enough to merit all-conference selection, but unlike their BCS conference brethren, questionable enough to slip through the cracks,” Cannon wrote. Cannon assigned the 32 players into the following categories: Identifiable High-Major Talent In H.S.: Marc Egerson (Delaware), Gary Forbes (Massachusetts), B.J.
