    A Faithful Soldier Charles Jerry Vines by Nancy Lee Smith “A preacher must be both soldier and shepherd. He must nourish, defend, and teach; he must have teeth in his mouth, and be able to bite and fight.” ~Martin Luther In an interview right before his retirement, a news reporter asked Jerry Vines the question, “Let‟s just say that you could gather every single person on the First Coast to listen to your last sermon here, what would be your message?” Vines answered saying he would speak on a familiar passage from the third chapter of the book of John. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” He then added, “That‟s the whole thing in a nutshell.” Proclaiming the message of God‟s love from John 3:16 has been the nutshell of Jerry Vines‟ ministry for over 50 years. From small country churches in the red hills of Georgia to meetings with United States Presidents, Jerry Vines‟ ministry has flourished. His retirement from the pastorate and his new focus on preachers marks the end of one chapter and the beginning of a new one. Hearing a message of love from Jerry Vines may not be what some people expect from the nationally known preacher. Indeed, his sermons, his opinions, and his writings cause some to label him controversial, even contentious. “Any time a man preaches the truth of Scripture, that in and of itself becomes controversial in our culture, especially,” Vines says.

    HOW ORTHODOX AND NON-ORTHODOX CHRISTIANS DIFFER Two Separate Models of Spirituality and Salvation By The Most Reverend Chrysostomos Former Archbishop and Metropolitan Emeritus of Etna I. Orthodoxy, Non-Traditionalist Orthodoxy, and Non-Orthodox Christianity It is difficult, in trying to explain to non-Orthodox (heterodox) Western Christians how Or - thodoxy and Western Christianity differ, without first explaining why, in the Orthodox world, there is an internal division between so-called traditionalist and non-traditionalist Orthodox (or ecu - menists and anti-ecumenists, a distinction that I will address subsequently). I shall, therefore, try to address that very complex issue, before presenting a model for understanding the things that separate Orthodox and non-Orthodox Christians. Traditionalists often, though not exclusively, operate under the banner of the Old Calendar (more precisely, the Church or Festal Calendar) and resistance to the adoption of the Papal or so- called “Revised Julian Calendar” by some Orthodox, and almost all Orthodox in America, in the twentieth century. Non-traditionalists have abandoned many of the traditions of Orthodoxy, some - times the Church Calendar—for which reason they are, in that instance, called “New Calen - darists”—and sometimes, though holding to the Church Calendar, other traditions, such as traditional forms of clerical dress, fasting, and worship, emphasis on monasticism, and so on. Be - tween the traditionalists and non-traditionalists there are varying degrees of interaction, variously marked by brotherly toleration of differences in practice and belief and, unfortunately, shockingly opprobrious hostility and enmity. This division in Orthodoxy not only makes it difficult to explain how Orthodox and non- Orthodox Christianity differ, but occasions immense confusion, since the non-traditionalist Ortho - dox, and especially in America, have adopted many of the traditions, much of the language, and a great deal of the ethos of Western Christianity, creating a sort of ethnically-centered but hybrid Or - thodoxy.

H. Mogashoa, Ph.D. Date Completed: March 2014 Landmarkism was a sectarian view of Baptist church history and practice. It arose in the mid-eighteenth century and was a dominant force in the first half-century of the life of the Southern Baptist Convention, America’s largest Protestant denomination. J. R. Graves was its chief architect, promoter, and apologist. He initiated or helped propagate controversies which shaped Southern Baptist life and practice. His influence spread Landmarkism throughout the Southern Baptist Convention through religious periodicals, books, and educational materials. Key Landmark figures in the seminaries and churches also promoted these views. After over fifty years of significant impact the influence of Landmarkism seemed to diminish eventually fading from sight. Many observers of Southern Baptist life relegated it to a movement of historical interest but no current impact. In an effort to examine this assumption, research was conducted which explored certain theological positions of Graves, other Landmarkers, and sects claimed as the true church by the promoters of Baptist church succession.

    The Nature of the Distinction between the Universal and Local Church in the NT: The Marks of a True Church Jackson Lawson Bi 480 Biblical Studies Seminar April 23, 2019 1 Introduction Although many have used the term “true church,” there has been confusion and disagreement over what is required to have a legitimate NT church. Particularly, there is disagreement over whether discipline as a mark of the church is a mark of a true church or simply a mark of a healthy church (or more biblical church). Rolland McCune states that, “Bible- believing Christians would probably agree on all three” marks that followed the reformation (the third being discipline).1 Albert Mohler Jr., in his journal article titled, “Church Discipline: The Missing Mark,” asserts that, “Evangelicals have long recognized discipline as the ‘third mark’ of the authentic church,” citing the Belgic Confession (1561), that includes discipline as a mark of the true church.2 In the end of his article, Mohler quotes John Leadley Dagg as saying, “It has been remarked, that when discipline leaves a church, Christ goes with it.” Mohler follows this quote by saying, “If so, and I fear it is so, Christ has abandoned many churches who are blissfully unaware of His departure.”3 And yet, as we shall see, John Hammett4 and Mark Dever5 disagree: the mark of discipline is not necessarily required in order for there to be a true church. Does Mohler (as well as McCune) confuse what is required for there to be a true church with what is required for a healthy church? Or are Hammett and Dever wrong? I will establish that they both agree in principle.

Trustees of a mission board, empowered to enact policies they believe best represent Southern Baptist doctrine and practice, pass a new policy which stipulates that any missionary candidate who speaks in a private prayer language has disqualified himself from consideration. This stricter set of regulations is first birthed via general guidelines which the trustees believed needed to be codified with stronger language. Subsequently, one trustee speaks out against the new directive questioning the definition of glossolalia (Gr., “speaking in tongues”).1 Moreover, the president of the agency, elected because he was considered a conservative, incredibly speaks out against the new policy, although he subsequently promises to follow its guidelines.2 Finally, accusations are then leveled at some of the trustees, alleging a dispensational view of Scripture is behind these actions.

The book points us to the person of Jesus. The word in print points us to the Word in person. As followers of the Word made flesh, we must resist succumbing to an approach to God’s Word that was as popular in Jesus’ day as it is today. An approach that would unwittingly rewrite the above passage to say, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God... And the Word became print and page and dwelt among us, at least, among those of us who are literate and educated, and it rolled off our printing presses and was memorized and studied and debated and divided over.” We must make no mistake here.

Duvall Introduction When Clarence Walker began publishing The Trail of Blood in 1931, neither he nor J. M. Carroll, the author, could have imagined the impact the booklet would have on Baptists in the United States and around the world. The first thousand copies had been sold quickly by another publisher and sales continued steadily from Ashland Avenue Baptist Church in Lexington, KY. Today there have been nearly three million copies sold. The booklet has been enlarged by the present publisher,1 and it has been translated into several other languages: Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Russian and possibly others. It is now on the Internet in at least three languages. The Trail of Blood describes in a brief outline form what successionist historians had written for nearly two centuries. They believed there had been a succession of churches that held the basic doctrines of Baptists, and they were not associated in any way with the Roman Catholic institution. The Trail of Blood does not claim to be a complete history as such, but what might be called a “Baptist Manifesto.” It was written in such a way that pastors and teachers could present a thumbnail sketch of their Baptist ancestors. Contested ownership and Bible translation in Southern Africa1 Jeremy Punt Department of Old and New Testament University of Stellenbosch Abstract An important but often neglected aspect of the use of the Bible in Africa is its ownership and issues related thereto. Ownership of the Bible obviously concerns its personal possession and all that that entails, but goes beyond the commodification of the Bible in modern consumerist culture to refer, ultimately, to the control of the biblical texts. The limited attention to the ownership of the Bible is mostly restricted to hermeneutics, often identified as a site of struggle in Africa. However, claims to ownership are becoming increasingly visible and up-front in the area of vernacular translations, where such claims and other conditions imposed on Bible translations illustrate the affinity people have with the Book, how their sense of identity and worldviews are moulded by it and how a Bible translation acts as an important player in issues of power at various levels. 1. INTRODUCTION: BIBLE TRANSLATIONS IN AFRICA The Bible has been read in translated format, since its earliest years and even when it was still in fragmented form. For many centuries the translation language of choice would be the Latin of the Vulgate,2 but since the sixteenth century vernacular translations became increasingly common, and on the African continent even more so with the impact of eighteen-century missionary activity.
