Kellogg Program – It’s Not Just a Laptop

What is it?

By purchasing the Kellogg Laptop Program (KLP) package, you can focus on what you came to do at Kellogg. You get a very good computer at a very good price, but the KLP's true differentiator is that your laptop comes with personalized service. The KLP's no-questions-asked, quick-response support lets you spend time on your class work, not on fixing your laptop. 80-90% of students enroll in the KLP each year. Their skill levels range from novice to expert, including many with backgrounds in Information Technology.

How can it benefit me?

The Kellogg Laptop Program laptop comes with a custom-configured software image that works efficiently in the Kellogg environment and provides increased security and improved reliability.

Near-zero downtime: If your laptop suffers hardware failure, you will receive an identical loaner laptop or component to use while we take care of the repair. This process only takes a few minutes, and you can get right back to work. The KLP also comes with ThinkPad Protection, which covers accidental spills and drops (but not theft, loss or fire). These repairs would normally cost up to $1,000, but with ThinkPad Protection and the support of Kellogg Information Systems (KIS), you're taken care of free of charge and without typical delays. No phone calls, no waiting, no arguments with the manufacturer; the hours or days you save not dealing with laptop repairs are invaluable.

Kellogg Laptop Program – It’s Not Just a Laptop (continued)

What if I use my own laptop or my company’s laptop during my coursework at Kellogg?

If you wish to use your own laptop, it must be of comparable quality to the current KLP offering, capable of accessing all network resources at Kellogg (printers, wireless, etc), allow you to install software on your laptop, and be covered by manufacturer warranty through your expected graduation date. You will be responsible for configuring your software for the Northwestern and Kellogg networks, as well as seeking vendor assistance for any other problems.

In the event of hardware failure, software corruption or compromise, or any other issues unrelated to your network account KIS will not be able to assist you or provide you with a loaner laptop or any laptop parts. Should you forget to bring your laptop for class, KIS will not be able to provide a loaner laptop for use during that weekend.

Kellogg is primarily a Microsoft Windows environment and, as such, Kellogg Information Systems does not provide support for Apple Macintoshes. While it is possible to support yourself using a Mac at Kellogg, some services work well, but others do not. Examples include Excel add-ons used in a class that exist solely on Windows, and incompatibilities with Word or Excel files when Microsoft upgraded Office for Windows well before the Macintosh.

If you want to first try using your own/company’s laptop at Kellogg you may do so, and you will have the option of participating in the KLP at any time during your coursework at Kellogg.

TEKcamp – Technology Education @ Kellogg

TEKcamp is the Kellogg School’s technology training session for all incoming students. The class focuses on Kellogg’s technology infrastructure and what resources are available to you as a student. If you participate in the KLP, you will receive your customized laptop, backpack and sleeve on campus during TEKcamp. If you choose not to participate in the KLP, you will receive information on how to configure your laptop for the Kellogg environment.
