  • Mangled Horses, Maimed Jockeys
The New York Times March 24, 2012 Mangled Horses, Maimed Jockeys By WALT BOGDANICH, JOE DRAPE, DARA L. MILES and GRIFFIN PALMER RUIDOSO, N.M. — At 2:11 p.m., as two ambulances waited with motors running, 10 horses burst from the starting gate at Ruidoso Downs Race Track 6,900 feet up in New Mexico’s Sacramento Mountains. Nineteen seconds later, under a brilliant blue sky, a national champion jockey named Jacky Martin lay sprawled in the furrowed dirt just past the finish line, paralyzed, his neck broken in three places. On the ground next to him, his frightened horse, leg broken and chest heaving, was minutes away from being euthanized on the track. For finishing fourth on this early September day last year, Jacky Martin got about $60 and possibly a lifetime tethered to a respirator. The next day, it nearly happened again. At virtually the same spot, another horse broke a front leg, pitching his rider headfirst into the ground. The jockey escaped serious injury, but not the 2-year-old horse, Teller All Gone. He was euthanized, and then dumped near an old toilet in a junkyard a short walk from where he had been sold at auction the previous year. In the next 24 hours, two fearful jockeys refused their assigned mounts. The track honored two other riders who had died racing. As doctors fought to save Mr. Martin’s life, a sign went up next to the track tote board: “Hang in there, Jacky. We love you.” On average, 24 horses die each week at racetracks across America.

  • How John Liviakis Selects Mares and Plans Matings
PHOTO CREDIT How John Liviakis selects mares and plans matings 22 / BloodHorse.com / FEBRUARY 13, 2016 / TheBloodHorse / BloodHorse BEHIND THE BREEDINGS BY LENNY SHULMAN hen the first blanket of snow covers the Bluegrass, we know that breeding season is about to commence. For the past Wfew years at this time Blood-Horse has asked prominent breeders to share their philosophies of choosing stallions for their mares, and this time around we travel out to California to talk with John Liviakis who, when not running his Liviakis Financial Com- munications, one of the leading financial public relations firms in the world, keeps busy reading pedigree analyses and checking in on his broodmares in Kentucky and Florida. Liviakis, a former Standardbred trainer, has bred grade I winner Gomo, multiple graded stakes winners Handsome Mike and Reneesgotzip, grad- ed stakes winners Tommy Macho, Mighty Caroline, and Renee’s Titan, and stakes winner Renee’s Queen. Although all of the above won added-money events within the last five years, Liviakis no longer owns any of their dams. Because Liviakis invests heavily in the young companies he helps to devel- op, his disposable income ebbs and flows, affecting whether he holds or sells bloodstock. “When you’re a breeder and have all these foals every year, your numbers go up geometrically,” Liviakis said from his Mill Valley, Calif., headquarters. “Unless you’re extremely wealthy, you can’t handle the numbers. So I’ve had to sell, and you can only sell the ones people want. But besides the financial rea- sons, I’m also a big believer in the fact that mares regress in their productivity as they get older and have more foals.

Testimony of Marty Irby Executive Director Animal Wellness Action before the U.S. House Subcommittee on Commerce and Consumer Protection H.R. 1754, "The Horseracing Integrity Act" January 28, 2020 On behalf of Animal Wellness Action, one of the nation's leading animal protection organizations on Capitol Hill, I submit this testimony in support of H.R. 1754, the Horseracing Integrity Act. I express my sincere thanks to Chair Jan Schakowsky and Ranking Member Cathy McMorris Rodgers for conducting this hearing and offer special thanks to Representatives Paul Tonko, and, Andy Barr for introducing this reform effort. I also express thanks to Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Frank Pallone and Ranking Member Greg Walden for their participation in this process. This hearing builds on the testimony and other information gathered during the 2018 hearing conducted before the Subcommittee on H.R. 2651 in the 115th Congress. I first want to underscore that Animal Wellness Action does not oppose horseracing. We join with many horse owners, breeders, trainers, and racing enthusiasts in speaking out on the broader topic of the protection of horses within the American horseracing industry and across the greater equine world. We seek to promote the proper stewardship of horses at every stage of their lives, including during their racing careers. We are deeply concerned about on- and off- track risks to the horses, including catastrophic injuries sustained during racing. America was built on the backs of horses, and they have always played a central role in the economy and culture of the United States. We owe them a debt of gratitude, and the very least we must do is ensure their safety, welfare, and protection.

  • Fashionably Late
drf.com/breeding DAILY RACING FORM Sunday, February 9, 2014 PAGE 11 fashionably late JOHN P. SPARKMAN As the stud career of the late, great Storm Cat began to wind down in the early 2000s, the Kentucky breeding indus- try needed a successor as the designated young sire of sires. The obvious choice seemed to be Unbridled’s Song, who had begun his stud career brilliantly, with Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner Unbridled Elaine, Grade 1 winner Songandaprayer, and multiple Grade 2 winner Even the Score in his first crop and Grade 1 winner Buddha in his second. As recently as the middle of last year, however, the investment the breeding industry made in sons of Unbridled’s Song looked like an expensive wager gone very wrong, since Even the Score, the sire of Dullahan and Take the Points, was his only son to have sired a Grade 1 winner. That lackluster record began to improve dramatically in the last half of the year, as Unbridled’s Song’s sons First Defence, Benoit & AssociAtes Dunkirk, and Rockport Harbor all added Fashion Plate wins the Las Virgenes Stakes on Feb. 1, becoming the first Grade 1 Grade 1 winners to their stud records. winner for Unbridled’s Song’s son Old Fashioned. After last Saturday’s Grade 1 Las Virgenes Stakes at Santa Anita, another Honest Man, both by Unbridled’s Song, with similar disdain in the 1 1/8-mile, name can be added to that list, a name that were only a few months away from their Grade 2 Remsen Stakes at Aqueduct a could turn out to be the most promising maiden victories.

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 22, 2015 36 HOURS WITH THE NTRA SAFETY AND INTEGRITY ALLIANCE Eskendereya Progeny Show Spirit It looks as though we are destined to wonder what might have been whenever we hear Eskendereya’s name. As a racehorse this son of Giant’s Causeway appeared to have the 2010 GI Kentucky Derby at his mercy, after he had won all three of his starts earlier in the year. He had been notably impressive in taking the GII Fountain of Youth S. by eight and a half lengths and the GI Wood Memorial by nine and a half. Unfortunately, just a week before The NTRA Team: Kilpack, Gates, Durenberger & Koch the Derby, Eskendereya was found to have a slight filling in his left front leg, from the ankle to the knee. Cont. p10 by Lucas Marquardt Back in 2008, the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) launched the Safety and Integrity Alliance. The goal was to promote and implement national standards for racetracks. Through a Code of Standards and an accreditation process, the Alliance addressed myriad issues: injury reporting and prevention; PERENNIAL CHAMPION HUNGRY FOR MORE safety equipment and a safer racing environment; medication Daithí Harvey talks to Irish champion jockey Pat Smullen and testing; health and safety of jockeys; aftercare and second about his career to date and his ambitions for the future. careers for retired equine athletes; and wagering security. But having unfolded on network television on the one day the whole world was watching, the story of Eight Belles had all the elements necessary for a modem media melodrama: a female victimized by a cruel and villainous industry and ultimately ridden to her death by greedy, callous, and glory-seeking male tormentors I The American thoroughbred racing industry is plagued with numerous regulatory problems; however, it took a 2008 tragedy to bring any of these issues to light. As the 133rd running of the Kentucky Derby concluded, second-place finisher Eight Belles suffered compound fractures in both of her front ankles, requiring her immediate euthanization.
