OUR GUEST S PEAKER ”Flintstone” Mateen Cleaves Flint’s #1 Ambassador

Speaking to an excited, packed house last Friday at the Flint Golf Club was Flint’s own Mateen Cleaves. The “to the core” Flintstone, former Michigan State and professional standout was introduced by Judge Duncan Beagle. The judge told the group that he has known Mateen for several years, even before his high school years at Flint Northern. They have a strong personal relationship that goes way back. Judge Beagle said that he actually sponsored Mateen’s youth basketball team, the Legal Beagle’s. Little did Judge Beagle or Mateen know how far Mateen’s career would grow from there. The judge introduced him as “Flint’s #1 Mateen Cleaves Ambassador. With President Joe Fioroni (breaking dress code,

At Michigan State, Cleaves was a 2-time Big Ten Player of the Year, a Consensus All-American, and led the 2000 to the NCAA Championship, earning the tournament’s “Most Outstanding Player” award. Professionally Mateen played for the , the , along with other NBA teams. He also spent time playing with professional teams overseas. After basketball, he became a basketball analysis for CBS Sports Network, the Detroit Pistons, and Fox Sports Detroit. He also hosts a show on Sirius XM radio.

Mateen was there to talk about the many organizations he is active in and how he gives back to the community he cares so much about. He said it was an honor to be speaking to the group.

His community involvement includes the 1 goal 1 passion Initiative, which is a tribute to his mother who taught him to give back to the community. He also started the Home for the Holidays program, he helps in the restoration of playgrounds, and he is very active with the Boys and Girls Club “Books and Basketball” program which honored him with Community Hero award. He says he wants to empower children to dream big and set goals.

Mateen is well aware of the tough times in city, finding it hard to see and read about it in newspaper and media. He says he doesn’t shy away from it, though. He says, for him, it’s time to take some action. When he travels, people ask him why he is still in Flint. He says he loves his city and is a Flintstone to the core. He loves to give back because that’s what he learned from his mom and dad, a respect for the community. Both were very passionate about kids and the community. He said he feels blessed by his upbringing. He also recognizes that many people have helped him on his rise up. From Community school directors who kept him active to his AAU coach, Raymond Jones, who took him and his teammates across the country to play basketball and to represent Flint. They took pride in being from Flint. He said he appreciates people like that, who do it from the heart. Mateen acknowledged all the great Flint athletes that came before him. People such as Jeff Greer, Andre Rison, , Fernando Smith, Carl Banks, Lonnie Young, Mark Ingram, and Cortney Hawkins who all gave him hope and inspiration that he could do it, too. He also recognized Flint’s own championship boxer, Andre Dirrell, who was at the meeting, too.

Mateen said the Flintstones and Flint pride was taken to MSU basketball with Antonio Smith, who was the first to sign with the team. Then joined, then Mateen, and Charlie Bell had no choice but to follow his teammates. He said it was leap of faith to go into an unknown and untested basketball program but the Flint team had a good feeling about Coach , almost as if he, too, was a Flintstone. Mateen said Coach Izzo loved the Flint boys because of what they did for the program. He said Coach Izzo is still huge in their life and is tied to Flint in other ways.

The Flintstones felt it was their job to carry the torch for all those that came before them and the great tradition of top athletes from Flint. He said it was not a competition but their time to continue the tradition of those great athletes. This is another reason he wants to give back, to pay tribute to those who came before him and laid out the path. He also said there are a lot of other successful people from Flint that the community can be proud of.

Now his major focus is the 1 Goal 1 Passion Initiative. He said he feels very blessed and has more gratification from the program than making a winning basket. He said to imagine that feeling times ten. That’s what he feels when he helps someone who really needs it. He said he was extremely gratified from the reaction from a person who doesn’t have much and is given a gift of a stipend to pay bills or food, or receives a gift when they would not have any. He is very proud of his Home for the Holiday program which continues to grow. He said they are looking to help 1000 families over the Christmas holidays all over Michigan. He said it feels good to do it.

His basketball camp very well attended by over 1000 kids but he said it is only the draw to get kids in the door. Once inside, the learning begins. It includes history, eco friendliness, personal responsibility, respect for others, life skills, and goal setting. The kids didn’t even see it coming. In the three days the camp is held, he has seen tremendous turn-arounds in the kid’s attitudes and from that, he personally gains a lot. It inspires him to continue his work. He preaches respect, giving back to the city, and to treat people the right way. He said it is the right thing to do.
