Course Overview Ballet I is a course designed to introduce novice movers to the concepts surrounding through body practice, study, visualization, and discussion. Together, we will investigate the mechanical properties of how to move through at the , phrases in the center of the floor, and progressing towards petit and grande (small and big) jumps through space. Ballet, being an artform using the French language, will be studied with the use the text, Ballet Basics by Sandra Noll Hammond (please rent/purchase in the UWW bookstore). We will start with the basics of ballet and work to build a well-integrated mind/body awareness through our time together in class.

Course Objectives -Consistent attendance, -Be completely present in class (mentally/emotionally/physically), -Introduction of basic ballet repertoire (plié, tendu, dégagé, frappé, fondu, adagio, grand jeté, ect.), -Introduce and continue working on basic ballet positions (feet and arms), -Understanding ballet alignment in stillness and during movement, -Introduction and eventual recognition of French ballet terms, -Effortful approach accompanied by a positive attitude, -Accuracy, growth and comprehension of movement, -Approaching the dance space as research: constant study and refinement (mind/body), -Acknowledge the Barre as a temporary resource (not to become dependent upon), -Development of port de bras (carriage of upper body/arms), -Ability to recognize/use connecting ballet movements (chassé, tombe, pas de bouree, balance, ect.), -Move with a basic sense of , -Ability to move with a variety of dynamics, styles, and use of weight/weightlessness.

Required Materials: -Journal/Notebook: Note-taking is encouraged -Required Textbook: Ballet Basics, Author: Sandra Noll Hammond -No phones, tablets, or laptops allowed in the research space (when necessary, devices can be used for recording dance phrases)

Attire: -Close-fitting clothing (top and bottoms) that facilitate ample movement and allow sight of the body’s lines: Women: (options) with pink , lycra/cotton/spandex athletic top (tanks, razorbacks, ect.) and bottoms (shorts, capris, leggings) Men: (options) lycra/cotton/spandex athletic top or t-shirt and bottoms (men’s black tights, running leggings) MEN WILL NEED TO PURCHASE A (Please discuss with Instructor) ***NO BAGGY CLOTHING---As an instructor, I need to see the body moving! No jeans/sweatshirts! Hair: Please pull hair into an “up-do,” preferably a bun. No hats, please! Food/snacks: No open drinks/snacks or eating inside the dance space. Please finish eating before entering the studio. No chewing gum!

Student Expectations: Attendance: Mandatory. Three (3) absences are allowed; each additional absence beyond 3 results in a full letter-grade penalty (A becomes a B, C=D, ect.) If called to be absent due to a University event, an excused absence is granted per documentation/ discussion with faculty. It is the student’s responsibility to get any missed material (handouts, tap steps, ect.). Observing: If you are injured/ill and still attend class, I will ask you to observe a student and take notes on their performance. Notes to be given to instructor at the end of class. Two “OBSERVES” is equal to 1 absence. Tardiness: If you are more than 10 minutes late to class, I will ask the student to observe and take notes. Each tardy counts as an absence. Instructor Coaching/Help: The best dance instruction cannot always be done verbally or visually. Often, it is important to show a student what part of the body is to be used through light touch. If one has personal concerns or injuries that may effect minimal physical instruction and/or is uncomfortable, please indicate via email or in-person discussion. Readings/Documenting: Read/view materials when assigned. Exams will include information gained from readings/viewings and physical practice.

Student & Classroom Conduct: -Consistent attendance, -Come prepared to class (proper dance attire, ballet slippers, hair) and having completed/read supplemental materials when assigned, -Check your UWW email regularly for changes in schedule or additional work, -No computers or cell phones to be used, or powered ON. -Positive attitude from all = positive experience for all.

No Class: Monday, February 1st and Spring Break (March 21st & 23rd)

Grading: Attendance/Participation/Physical Practice/Attire: 50% 50% of your grade is attributed to consistent attendance (4+ absences produce a full letter grade deduction), active mind/body and personal focus, and proper dance clothing.

Physical & Written Assessments: Midterm = 20% & Writing/Readings = 10% = 30% 30% of your grade is made up of your effort and energy put forth through our Midterm dance evaluation and any assigned readings/video viewings/responses. th Final Exam: 20% Wednesday, May 11 10:00am-12pm 20% of your grade is based on your attendance, energy and effort during our REQUIRED Final Exam.
