Chapter 6

The appointing of the seven

Growing # of believers • :41 (41) So those who received his word were bapzed, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.

• Acts 2:47 (47) praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.

:4 (4) But many of those who had heard the word believed, and the number of the men came to about five thousand.

:14 (14) And more than ever believers were added to the Lord, multudes of both men and women,

Can’t even count them any more! Acts 4:34 (34) There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold

Servants/ • Qualificaons Servants 3 Good repute, full of Spirit, and wisdom Deacons • 1 Timothy 3:8-12 (8) Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain. They must hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. And let them also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless. Their wives likewise must be dignified, not slanderers, but sober- minded, faithful in all things. Let deacons each be the husband of one wife, managing their children and their own households well.

The reason for servants/Deacons

Acts 6:4 (4) But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word."

— Acts 6:6 These they set before the apostles, and they prayed and laid their hands on them.

— Impart the power of the Holy Spirit

— Setting apart for a particular work Setting apart for a work

Acts 13:2-3 (2) While they were worshiping the Lord and fasng, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me and Saul for the work to which I have called them." (3) Then aer fasng and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off.

To receive power of the spirit

Acts 8:14-17 (14) Now when the apostles at heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John, (15) who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, (16) for he had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been bapzed in the name of the Lord . (17)Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit.

Acts 19:5-6 (5) On hearing this, they were bapzed in the name of the Lord Jesus. (6)And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying.

2 Timothy 1:6-7 (6) For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gi of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, (7) for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

Of the libernes In Jerusalem, and probably in other large cies, the several were arranged according to naonalies, and even cras. Thus we have in this verse menon of the synagogues of the Cyrenians, Alexandrians, Cilicians, and cs. Libernes is a Lan word (liberni, freedmen), and means here Jews or their descendants who had been taken as slaves to , and had there received their liberty; and who, in consequence of the decree of Tiberius, about 19 a.d., expelling them from Rome, had returned in great numbers to Jerusalem. They were likely to be the chief opponents of Stephen, because they supposed that by his preaching, their religion, for which they had suffered at Rome, was endangered in Jerusalem.

From what chapter?

“Foretold by the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ would suffer” "And it shall come to pass aerward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions.

(Now this man acquired a field with the reward of his wickedness, and falling headlong he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out.

But Peter and the apostles answered, "We must obey God rather than men.
