"We expect, at Colorado State University, that the excellence of our athletic programs will mirror that of the excellence that has always been the academic foundation at this great university." -- Jack Graham

As Jack Graham moves into his third year as Director of Athletics in 2014, the “Bold New Era” of Colorado State Athletics has matured into the “Be Bold” era. The vision, direction and accomplishments of Graham’s fi rst two years have laid a foundation for the ambitious and achievable plans he brought with him on Dec. 1, 2011. A successful business leader and former Rams quarterback, Graham was chosen by CSU President Tony Frank to lead the institution’s athletic programs, and more importantly to apply the vision and drive necessary to produce excellence in every aspect. “In Jack Graham, we have the perfect combination of dedicated Ram fan, stand-out athlete and experienced business leader with the skills and business acumen to energize and advance our overall athletics program,” Frank said upon announcing the hire. “I am excited about the enthusiasm he will generate among our students, coaches, alumni, donors and fans. He brings high standards, high expectations and a passion for winning that is infectious.” Graham immediately went to work re-shaping the department, beginning with the hire of Jim McElwain as head football coach on Dec. 13, 2011, from his position at Alabama, which was on its way to a second national championship victory in a three-year span. That move provided the fi rst glimpse of what the Bold New Era would mean for Colorado State, and was followed by the high-profi le hire of former national coach of the year Larry Eustachy in men’s basketball, and the hire of Ryun Williams to lead the women’s basketball program. “We have the same expectations for excellence in our sports program that we have for all areas of the university,” Frank added. “With Jack’s leadership, I see no reason why CSU athletics cannot and should not compete at the highest level. To get there, we have to dream big, work hard and settle for nothing less than excellence.” Immediately upon his appointment, Graham also announced he would drive a process to secure approval to build an on-campus football stadium at Colorado State to replace then-44-year-old Hughes Stadium, located several miles from the school’s campus. Graham succeeded in leading an ambitious process that by early October 2012 secured the unanimous recommendation of Colorado State’s Board of Governors to Dr. Frank to allow the Athletics Department to begin the fundraising process for the

There are turnarounds, and then there are complete transformations. What Jim McEl- wain has done in two seasons as head coach at Colorado State easily surpasses the con- fi nes of a turnaround. His impact on the program has not only brought wins, but has transformed every aspect of the way his student-athletes approach each day, both on and off the fi eld. McElwain, a 29-year coaching veteran, became the 20th head football coach in Colorado State program history on Dec. 13, 2011. He spent the 2008-11 seasons as offensive co- ordinator at Alabama, where he played a key role in leading the Crimson Tide to two BCS national championships (2009 and ‘11). Baldwin also scripted the Aggies’ 63-19 win over Wyoming. Baldwin helped USU quarterback Diondre Borel to single-season school records in total offense (3,343 yards in 2009) and fewest interceptions (four in 2009). Turbin in 2009 also became USU’s fi rst 1,000-yard back in eight years and the school’s single-season record holder with 18 total TDs. Baldwin shifted to Utah State from New Mexico, where he spent two seasons (2007-08) as offensive coordinator. His Lobos offense in 2008 ranked third in the Mountain West and 16th in the NCAA in with 208.3 rushing yards per game, led by Rodney Ferguson, who fi nished second to CSU’s Gartrell Johnson in the conference rushing race, but led the league with 13 rushing TDs. The year before, Baldwin’s offense was one of only three FBS programs to produce a 3,000-yard passer (Donovan Porterie 3,006), a 1,000-yard rusher (Ferguson 1,177) and two 1,000-yard receivers (Marcus Smith 1,125, and Travis Brown 1,031). Smith led the MW in receptions and receiving yards, while setting a school record with 91 receptions. The Lobos piled up an impressive fi ve fi rst-team all-con- ference selections (Ferguson, Brown, Smith, and linemen Devin Clark and Vince Natali). Porterie threw for 354 yards to lead Baldwin’s offense in a 23-0 triumph over Nevada in the New Mexico Bowl, its fi rst bowl win since 1961. Before his time in Albuquerque, Baldwin handled the offense for John L. Smith at Michigan State from 2003-06. Over his fi rst three years in East Lansing, his wide receivers coach was Jim McElwain. In 2006, Baldwin orchestrated the largest comeback in NCAA history, on Oct. 21 at Northwestern. Down 38-3 with 9:54 left in the third quarter, the Spartans put up 38 unanswered points in a 41-38 triumph. That season, future NFL QB Drew Stanton, a Unitas Award fi nalist, set a school record with a .642 completion percentage and fi nished second in school history in career completions, passing yards and total offense. WR Mike Trannonset a single-game MSU record with 14 catches en route to the Spartans’ all-time receptions record (148). In 2005, Michigan State fi nished among the national offensive leaders in four categories: No. 5 in total offense (497.3 yards per game), No. 11 in passing (295.5 yards per game), No. 18 in scoring (33.8 points per game), and No. 20 in rushing (201.8 yards per game). The total offense and passing marks established program records. That year, fi ve Spartans had at least 28 receptions and two TDs. Michigan State was the only FBS team with fi ve players to register at least 400 receiving yards. Baldwin’s offenses produced the fi rst two 3,000-yard passers in MSU history: Stanton in 2004 and Jeff Smoker in 2003. Smoker, in Baldwin’s fi rst Spartans season, threw for a school-record 3,395 yards. In 2004, Stanton became the fi rst QB in MSU annals to throw for 300 yards and rush for 100 in the same game. Before moving to Michigan State, Baldwin guided the offense and coached quarterbacks at Baylor for one season (2002). His top Bears receiver, Reggie Newhouse, was a second-team all-Big 12 performer after establishing single-season school records with 75 receptions and 1,140 receiving yards. With Baldwin on staff, Baylor posted its fi rst conference win in more than four years. He served the 2001 campaign as offensive coordinator at Cincinnati, helping the 7-5 Bearcats to the Motor City Bowl. Baldwin tutored Conference USA’s second-leading passer, Gino Guidugli, the league’s Freshman of the Year. He threw to the conference’s leading receiver, LaDaris Vann (6.64 receptions/game). Baldwin’s résumé includes 10 years of head coaching experience at San Jose State (1997-2000) and Cal State Northridge (1996), plus fi ve years as a head coach at the junior-college level. His 58-60 career record includes a 31-21 JC mark, an 18-27 record at SJSU and a 9-12 ledger at Northridge. San Jose State’s head coach and offensive play-caller for four years (1997-2000), his team was a giant slayer. He won three straight games against Stanford (1998-2000). In 2000, in addition to Stanford, San Jose State topped then-No. 9 TCU to end the country’s longest winning streak, 12 games. That year, his club also featured the nation’s No. 4 rusher, Deonce Whitaker (157.7 yards per game). Before Stanford went to the Rose Bowl in 1999, Baldwin handed his former team a 44-39 loss, a year after knocking off the Cardinal to open the 1998 campaign, a 35-23 road triumph, the Spartans’ fi rst victory over a Pac-10 foe in eight years. In 1997, the Spartans upset No. 24 Air Force, 25-22, their fi rst win over a ranked opponent since 1990. Baldwin moved up the head coaching ranks after a two-year stint (1994-95) as head coach at his alma mater, Cal State Northridge. In 1996, he led Northridge to a 7-4 record, its fi rst winning campaign in four years. A successful junior-college head coach in the highly competitive California system from 1990-95, he spent one year (1995) at Santa Rosa, which fi nished 8-3 to earn a berth in the Lions Bowl. He spent the prior four seasons (1990-94) at the reins of Santa Barbara City College, earning 1991 California Community College Region III Coach of the Year after a 9-2 season and an appearance in the Shrine Potato Bowl. Baldwin’s fi rst head coaching mentor was Jack Elway, under whom he spent 10 years (1979-88) as an assistant coach. After Baldwin launched his career as a wide receivers and tight ends coach at his alma mater, Cal State Northridge, Elway took over as Matadors head coach prior to the 1979 campaign and made Baldwin his fi rst defensive backs coach. Baldwin then followed Elway to San Jose State, where Baldwin served as wide receivers coach from 1980-83, and to Stanford, where Baldwin held the same position from 1984-87 until Elway promoted him to passing-game coordinator in 1988. The 1986 Stanford teamfi nished 8-4 to earn an invitation to the Gator Bowl, the program’s only postseason berth in the 1980s. During his four-year tenure as an assistant at San Jose State where his offensive coordinator was Dennis Erickson, the Spartans had three winning seasons, including the 1981 Pacifi c Coast Athletic Association championship and a berth in the California Bowl. Baldwin also groomed four SJSU receivers that would go on to the NFL: Mark Nichols, Stacey Bailey, Mervyn Fernandez and Tim Kearse. Before entering coaching, Baldwin preceded Elway and his future Hall of Fame son, John, in Southern California. In fact, Baldwin played football at Granada Hills High School in the early 1970s before the younger Elway’s arrival at that school, and subsequent college career at Stanford. Baldwin left Granada Hills to play at Cal State Northridge, where he earned three letters. A 1978 graduate of Northridge, Baldwin owns a bachelor’s degree in physical education and health recreation. He also earned a master’s in physical education administration from St. Mary’s College in 1986. Born March 22, 1955, in Denver, Colo., Baldwin and his wife Kathleen have three children. Their son, Sean, married his wife Lindsi in 2008. They also have a son, Ryan, and a daughter, Keiley.

JOHNNY SQUARE Team Advisor | Second Decade at CSU

Johnny Square has been mentoring CSU student-athletes for nearly two decades. A student-athlete attending Colorado State receives an education from one of the nation’s premier institutions of higher learning. But the education a student-athlete receives at CSU extends far beyond the classroom and the football fi eld. Rams Head Coach Jim McElwain and his staff painstakingly work individually and collectively with student-athletes to provide cultural, social and economic guidance as part of their overall educational experience. Square, a former football player at CSU who lettered four years from 1972-75 and played alongside former athletics director Mark Driscoll, provides valuable leadership and guidance to various student-athletes in the Rams’ program. Square has the unique perspective of having competed at the collegiate level, and faced many of the same personal challenges present in the lives of student-athletes in today’s world. He provides that guidance individually and to various groups in the Rams’ program as part of the educational experience available at Colorado State. He also adds another unique perspective: Not only did he compete as a collegian and later play in the NFL, Johnny and his wife, Vicki, are the parents of two former CSU student-athletes. Daughter Justine was a women’s basketball player for the Rams, while son Alex was a running back on Colorado State’s football team from 2005-09. In 1989, Square founded Iasis Christ Fellowship, launching the church in 1994 with a heart for serving the Fort Collins community. Also a leader in the city, Square has helped organize a Pastor’s Prayer Fellowship, which has been meeting monthly for nearly 20 years. He also serves as a chaplain with the Fort Collins Police Department. Johnny and Vicki have lived in the Fort Collins community for more than a quarter century. RODNEY SMITH Special Services | Third Decade at CSU

Rodney Smith serves as a security consultant for the Colorado State football program following his 29-year career with the CSU Polics force. The former Corporal maintains an invaluable position within the Rams’ football program and with CSU Athletics, as he had done previously when he patrolled and protected all of the property owned and leased by CSU, and provided safety and security for all of the students, faculty and staff on both the main campus and the Foothills Campus. Smith provides security for the Rams’ football team both at home and on the road, ensuring the security of prac- tice and team movement and coordinating with Football Operations Director Tom Ehlers and local authorities on all aspects of the Rams’ road-game travel process. For home games, Smith assists the program with its interaction with supervisers of 32,500-seat Hughes Stadium, including the sidelines and stands, and is in constant contact with the referees and visiting teams’ operations directors. Smith also has provided security at the last six Super Bowls and one Pro Bowl for ESPN, NFL Network and CBS Sports through his work with Land- mark Event Staffi ng Services. His event work at CSU also includes security of volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball games in Moby Arena, as well as travel with those teams. He has provided security for all of Colorado State’s bowl games in the 1990s and 2000s. Smith is a graduate of Colorado State University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in liberal arts. He has received numerous Offi cial Commen- dations, as well as the Minority Distinguished Service Award and several community service awards. Smith referees high school basketball games, has served as liaison to CSU Student Government and the Inter-Fraternity Council, and Chapter Advisor for the CSU intramural baseball team. LOWELL WIGHTMAN Mental Conditioning Specialist | 3rd Year at CSU

Lowell Wightman is in his third season with the Rams as the Mental Conditioning Coach. Head Coach Jim McElwain met Wightman in the spring of 2012 during a player academic meeting and the two discovered a shared belief that shaping and changing a team culture requires the brain and body working together to achieve greatness. Wightman designed and implemented the Rams’ fi rst mental conditioning curriculum in June 2012 while com- pleting his doctoral studies in educational leadership in the CSU School of Education. Colorado State is one of just a handful of Division I programs with a formal mental conditioning program, joining an impressive group of schools that have shown improvement each year of implementation. Rams senior linebacker Aaron Davis was quoted in an October 2013 Denver Post story as saying, “He gets us thinking about different sides of the game...about team chemistry, and being a good teammate.” Wightman came to Colorado in 2004 from a suburb of Chicago, where he developed his mental conditioning skills working with Illinois athletes such as Antwaan Randle El (Washington Redskins), Eddie Curry (Chicago Bulls) and Curtis Granderson (New York Mets) from 1996 to 2000. From 1998 to 2000 he coached the Illinois Wolverine basketball club and in 2000 coached the U16 team to an AAU National Championship. In the decade prior, Wightman developed leadership and mental toughness strategies at Loyola Chicago, DePaul University and Northwestern, working with head coaches Joey Meyer at DePaul and Kevin O’Neill at Northwestern. “Building trust with high performance athletes is essential, and Lowell sincerely builds trust quickly,” said Josh Lafrik, Mental Conditioning Specialist at IMG in Bradenton, Fla. Wightman is the founder of 360 Mindset, an adjunct professor in the CSU School of Education’s Adult Education & Training program, and the author of the Master Coaching course offering. He holds a bachelor’s degree in fi nance from Iowa, a master’s in administration and supervision from the University of Phoenix and a PhD from CSU in Human Development and Performance. At Iowa, Wightman played basketball for Dick Schultz in 1973 and then Lute Olson during the 1974-75 seasons. Lowell and his wife Diane have two grown children.
