Men's Singles Championship 2018 US OPEN Flushing, New York, USA | 27 August-9 September 2018 S-128, D-64 | $53 million | Outdoor Hard www.usopen.org DAY 14 MEDIA NOTES | Sunday, 9 September 2018 MEN’S SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP ARTHUR ASHE STADIUM [3] Juan Martin del Potro (ARG) vs [6] Novak Djokovic (SRB) Djokovic Leads 14-4 (4-0 in Grand Slams) DAY 14 HIGHLIGHTS • Former US Open champions No. 3 Juan Martin del Potro and No. 6 Novak Djokovic meet on Sunday in the championship of the final Grand Slam tournament of the season. This is the first US Open title match featuring two former champions since 2015 when Djokovic defeated Federer. That was also Djokovic’s last title in Flushing Meadows. Djokovic owns a 14-4 head-to-head advantage over Del Potro, including 4-0 in Grand Slams, winning twice at the US Open (3R in 2007, QF in 2012). Djokovic has won the past three meetings, all last year, and Del Potro’s last win came in the first round of the Rio Olympics in 2016. Both players are trying to win their third title of the season. Djokovic is 2-1 in finals and Del Potro is 2-2. • Del Potro is making his second Grand Slam final appearance, the first since capturing the 2009 US Open title (d. Federer). The 29-year-old Argentine has only lost one set (17-1) in six matches leading into the final and that came in the opening set tie-break of his quarter-final against Isner. He is trying to win his second Grand Slam title in his 22nd tournament since capturing his maiden crown here nine years ago. That would be an Open Era record for most events played in between a first and second Grand Slam title. He is also trying to snap a streak of eight consecutive Grand Slam titles won by players 30 & over. Andy Murray (29) is the last under-30 Grand Slam champion at 2016 Wimbledon. • Djokovic is appearing in an Open Era record-tying eighth US Open final (2-5) and 23rd overall Grand Slam title match (13-9). He’s won five of his last six Grand Slam appearances with his only loss coming two years ago here to Wawrinka. The 31-year-old Serb has won 13 consecutive sets since dropping the third set tie-break to Tennys Sandgren in the second round. Overall he has won 18 of 20 sets. The 2011 and 2015 US Open champion is also trying to tie Pete Sampras for third place all-time on the Grand Slam singles titles list with 14. Djokovic is attempting to win multiple Grand Slam titles in a season for the fourth time in his career. He won three in 2011 and 2015 and two in 2016. • Big Four Lead the Way: At least one member of the Big Four (Nadal, Federer, Djokovic, Murray) has reached the US Open final in 14 of the last 15 tournaments (except 2014, Cilic d. Nishikori). During that stretch, 11 of the last 14 US Open titles were won by a Big Four member except Del Potro in 2009, Cilic in 2014 and Wawrinka in 2016. Since Roland Garros in 2005 when Nadal won his first Grand Slam title, the Big Four have accounted for 49 of the past 54 Grand Slam titles. During the stretch, Nadal has won 17 titles, Federer 16, Djokovic 13 and Murray 3. The three other players to win a Grand Slam title during the span are: Wawrinka, a three-time champion (2014 Aust. Open, 2015 Roland Garros, 2016 US Open), Cilic (2014 US Open) and Del Potro (2009 US Open). • WHAT’S AT STAKE: Prize Money ATP Ranking Points Champion $3,800,000 2,000 Finalist $1,850,000 1,200 ATP RACE TO LONDON (updated going into Championship) No. Player Points KEY 1 Rafael Nadal * 7,480 Top 8 qualify for Nitto ATP Finals in London, 11-18 November 2 Novak Djokovic * 5,645^ * Qualified 3 Juan Martin del Potro 4,910^ ^ Add 800 points for Final win 4 Roger Federer * 4,800 5 Alexander Zverev 4,365 6 Marin Cilic 3,815 7 Kevin Anderson 3,450 8 Dominic Thiem 3,365 9 John Isner 2,930 10 Kei Nishikori 2,475 2018 US OPEN – Day 14 Media Notes Sunday, 9 September 2018 Page 2 of 6 OPEN ERA 30 & OVER GRAND SLAM TITLE LEADERS (min. 2): Djokovic is trying to add his name to the list: No. Tournaments Rod Laver 4 1969 Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon, US Open Ken Rosewall 4 1968 Roland Garros, 1970 US Open 1971-72 Australian Open Roger Federer 4 2012 Wimbledon, 2017 Aust. The Argentine is 5-16 against Federer with all five wins on hard courts, none more meaningful than when he rallied from a set-and-a-break down to deny Federer a sixth straight US Open title. Del Potro can prevent history from being made again as Federer and Rafael Nadal are one win from meeting for the first time at the US Open. The Swiss and Spaniard have been this close six times now, including in 2009, when del Potro defeated Nadal 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 in the semi-finals before beating Federer in the final. • Nadal’s quarter-final opponent on Wednesday is #NextGenATP player Andrey Rublev. The 19-year-old Russian is the youngest US Open quarter-finalist since Andy Roddick in 2001. Rublev would be the youngest semi-finalist at the US Open since Lleyton Hewitt in 2000 and at any Grand Slam event since Nadal at 2005 Roland Garros. A teenager has never defeated a World No.

Both will aim to use home advantage to have a good run here this year – Monfils will look for a repeat of his 2008 performance when he reached the semifinals, while Pouille will hope to emulate the form he displayed in reaching the last 4 at the Australian Open in January to impress the home fans in Paris. • Monte Carlo champion Fabio Fognini takes on fellow Italian Andreas Seppi in the first match on Court Simonne Mathieu today. • Physics of Tennis Lesson 4 Energy
The Physics of Tennis Lesson 4: Energy changes when a ball interacts with different surfaces Unit Overview: In this unit students continue to develop understanding of what can be at first glance a complicated system, the game of tennis. In this activity we have taken two components of the game of tennis, the ball and court, to see if we can model the interactions between them. This activity focuses on the energy interactions between ball and court. Objectives: Students will be able to- • Describe what forces interact when the ball hits a surface. • Understand what changes occur when potential and kinetic energy conversion is taking place within a system. At the high school level students should include connections to the concept of “work =FxD” and calculations of Ek = ½ 2 mv and Ep =mgh according to the conservation of energy principal. • Identify the types of energy used in this system. (restricted to potential & kinetic energy) • Comparative relative energy losses for typical court compositions. Lesson Time Required: Four class periods Next Generation Science/Common Core Standards: • NGSS: HS-PS3-1.Create a computational model to calculate the change in the energy of one component in a system when the change in energy of the other component(s) and energy flows in and out of the system are known. • CCSS.Math. Content: 8.F.B.4 Use functions to model relationships between quantities. • Construct a function to model a linear relationship between two quantities. Determine the rate of change and initial value of the function from a description of a relationship or from two (x, y) values, including reading these from a table or from a graph.
