Sleepy Hollow Homeowners Association May 3, 2013 Board of Supervisors of Marin County 3501 Civil Center Drive San Rafael, CA 94903-4157 Re: Stream Conservation Area (SCA) Proposed Amendments to the Development Code Honorable Members of the Board of Supervisors: INTRODUCTION The Sleepy Hollow Homes Association (SHHA) objects to the proposed changes to Chapters 22.33 (Stream Protection) and 22.63 (Stream Conservation Area Permit) as they would apply to the residents of the unincorporated portion of San Anselmo known as Sleepy Hollow. We ask that the County exempt and/or delay implementation of any changes to Chapters 22.33 and 22.63 as to the city-centered corridor streams, including Sleepy Hollow. The SHHA supports implementation of the proposed amendments to the San Geronimo Valley, to protect wildlife habitat in streams where Coho Salmon currently exist. The SHHA supports regulations to ensure the health and survival of the species in these areas. The SHHA recognizes the urgency of this matter to the San Geronimo Valley, both for the survival of the endangered and declining Coho population and for the property rights of the affected residents who are currently subject to a building moratorium.

The myth of the unbeatable fighter is just that, a myth. In what will go down as the single most memorable UFC fight in history, Ronda Rousey was not only defeated, but systematically destroyed by a fighter and a coaching staff that had spent years preparing for that night. On 2/28, Holly Holm and Ronda Rousey were the two co-headliners on a show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The idea was that Holm, a former world boxing champion, would impressively knock out Raquel Pennington, a .500 level fighter who was known for exchanging blows and not taking her down. Rousey was there to face Cat Zingano, a fight that was supposed to be the hardest one of her career. Holm looked unimpressive, barely squeaking by in a split decision. Rousey beat Zingano with an armbar in 14 seconds.

SOAS Working Papers in Linguistics Vol. 17 (2015): 147-167 Writing System Mimicry in the Linguistic Landscape Paul Sutherland [email protected] 1. Introduction The study of the linguistic landscape of cities, introduced by Landry and Bourhis (1997), has so far attended to a variety of different uses of written language in the public sphere. One use it has yet to address in significant detail is what I term writing system mimicry, and it is the principal aim of this paper to begin to address this gap. Writing system mimicry will be defined in more detail in Section 3, but may be loosely described as the choice to make a text in one writing system superficially resemble text in another. Figure 1 is an example of this from West London, in which the word <bollywood> 1 (written in Latin script and clearly intended to be read as English) mimics certain features and graphemes of the Devanagari script, e.g. the horizontal connecting bar and the grapheme <ठ> /ʈʰ/ that resembles Latin <o>. Figure 1: A typical example of writing system mimicry.2 In this paper I investigate the possibility that the choice to mimic another writing system may have a sociolinguistic explanation. In particular, I attempt to find answers to the following: 1. How have various academic fields and non-academic discourses described and accounted for writing system mimicry? 2. How might it fit into existing theories and frameworks of linguistic landscape studies? 1 Throughout this article, I use the following standard transcription conventions: /phonemic/, [phonetic] and <orthographic>. 2 Source for all figures: the author.
