NAEMSP® National EMS Medical Directors Course & Practicum® January 7-9, 2019 Austin, Texas Course Co-Directors Beth Adams, MA, BSN, RN, NRP, FAEMS A nurse paramedic, Beth spent 20+ years as an EMS educator, prior to becoming the Quality Manager for the Fairfax County Fire & Rescue Department (Virginia). She served two terms on the National Association of EMS Physicians’ Board of Directors and was the 2008 recipient of NAEMSP's Keith Neely Outstanding Contribution to EMS Award. She represented NAEMSP on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration EMS Core Content Task Force and the National EMS Performance Measures Project. Beth is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Clinical Research and Leadership with The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Science. She is a contributing author for multiple EMS textbooks and has presented regionally and nationally on EMS education, clinical care topics, management and quality improvement. Robert A. Swor, DO, FACEP, FAEMS Robert Swor DO, FACEP, FAEMS, has been an Emergency Physician at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan for over 30 years. He serves as both the Research Director for the Department of Emergency Medicine Beaumont Health, and Director of EMS programs for Beaumont-Royal Oak. He serves as medical director for a number of local EMS agencies and is a Professor of Emergency Medicine at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine. He has served as a past president of the National Association of EMS Physicians, and as the past Chairman of the State of Michigan EMS Coordinating Committee. He is currently Chair of the Board of Directors, for the National Registry for Emergency Medical Technicians. He is an active researcher and published widely in peer review publications on the topics of trauma, cardiac arrest resuscitation and quality improvement in EMS. Dr. Swor served as a technical advisor on a number of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration EMS projects, serves as an associate editor for Prehospital Emergency Care, and is a reviewer for a number of peer review journals. He is board certified in Emergency Medicine and sub specialty certified in Emergency Medical Services, Bob was the 2017 recipient of the Ronald D. Stewart Award from NAEMSP in recognition of his impact on the growth and development of EMS as the out-of-hospital system of care that it is today. Course Faculty Peter Antevy, MD Peter M. Antevy, MD is a Pediatric Emergency Medicine (EM) physician practicing in-hospital emergency medical care at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, a level I trauma and tertiary care center in South Florida. Board-certified in pediatrics, emergency medicine and the complex subspecialty of EMS, he is also the founder of Pediatric Emergency Standards, Inc., and he serves as the Medical Director for Davie Fire-Rescue, Coral Springs-Parkland Fire Rescue, Southwest Ranches Fire Rescue and American Ambulance, all in South Florida. Dr. Antevy also serves as Associate Medical Director for several other agencies including Palm Beach County, Florida and he is also the longstanding medical director for two highly-regarded paramedic training programs as well as several mobile integrated healthcare (MIHC) programs in greater Broward County, Florida. Dr. Antevy was recently appointed to serve as the lead pediatric EMS specialist/consultant for the highly-influential Metropolitan EMS Medical Directors Coalition. This highly-cohesive international consortium, known for envelope-pushing education and operational advances in 9-1-1 care, is largely comprised of the jurisdictional, accountable medical directors of the 50 to 60 largest municipalities in the U.S. and Europe as well as several key U.S. federal agencies. 2019 Medical Director’s Course (MDC) Faculty 1 In turn, he has been the recipient of many regional, national and international honors and awards including the 2014 Raymond H. Alexander EMS Medical Director of the Year in Florida and the 2015 EMS 10 Innovator of the Year Award from the Journal of Emergency Medical Services. In 2017, he was awarded the prestigious Ron J. Anderson Memorial Award in Dallas, TX, the international public health service accolade bestowed for his far- reaching public health contributions in emergency medical care, particularly for his efforts to improve outcomes for critically ill and injured children. Most recently, Peter was named National Medical Director of the Year by the NAEMT. At the same time, Dr. Antevy remains a grounded, in-the-trenches EMS medical director as exemplified by his recent intrepid on-scene patient care at the Parkland, Florida high school shooting incident and, in turn, his connected follow-up of patients, families and rescuers. A world-class lecturer and training expert, he has become an admired and sought-after educator-speaker for innumerable state and national conferences. Jeff Beeson, DO, FACEP, FAEMS Dr. Jeff Beeson serves as the Chief Medical Officer at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth, Texas. He has been involved in EMS over 25 years as an EMT, Paramedic, Flight Nurse and most recently as an EMS Medical Director. Jeff has been a pioneer in Integrated Health Delivery establishing multiple MIH programs and overseeing Medical Command Centers providing Nurse Navigation to 911 call centers. Dr. Beeson serves as the Medical Director and a Medical Team Manager for Texas A&M Task Force a FEMA and State US@R team. Thomas H. Blackwell, MD, FACEP, FAEMS Dr. Tom Blackwell is the Assistant Dean for Longitudinal Clinical Education and Director of the EMT Training Program at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville (USCSOMG) and is a Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Greenville Health System. Prior to joining faculty at USCSOMG, Tom was an attending physician in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC. He served as a clinical professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of North Carolina (UNC)-Chapel Hill, and on the faculty of UNC- Charlotte in the Department of Public Health Sciences and Center for Homeland Security and Major Disasters. During his 18 years in Charlotte, Dr. Blackwell served as medical director for the Mecklenburg EMS Agency, the Charlotte Fire Department, 14 volunteer fire and rescue organizations, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department SWAT Team and Aviation Unit, the Charlotte Offices of the FBI and Secret Service, the Charlotte Douglas International Airport, and Carowinds amusement park. He also served as medical director for Bank of America Stadium, the Charlotte Motor Speedway, the Wachovia/Wells Fargo PGA Championship, and the Convention Center. Dr. Blackwell assisted in the development of the new academic Department of Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medicine Residency Program at the Greenville Health System and is the Director of Prehospital Medicine at GHS. He has served as a visiting professor at multiple universities and medical centers and has published numerous articles relating to his interests in EMS performance and response, and disaster medicine. He has won many awards for his research and commitment to Emergency Medicine. Marina Del Rios, MD, MS Dr. Marina Del Rios is Associate Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Emergency Ultrasound Faculty, and Director of Social Emergency Medicine and Population Health. She is an active member of the Science Subcommittee of the Emergency Cardiovascular Care Committee and Advocacy Ambassador of the Council on Cardiopulmonary, Critical Care, Perioperative and Resuscitation of the American Heart Association (AHA). Dr. Del Rios is one of the project leads and Director of Community Engagement of the Illinois Heart Rescue Project, a state-wide QA/QI project tasked with more than doubling neurologically intact survival of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest victims. She has extensive experience with community engagement, CPR education, and cardiovascular health promotion in high-risk populations and has organized more than 500 community CPR training events in the state of Illinois. She was a member of the Committee on the Treatment of Cardiac Arrest of the Health Division of the National Academy of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (formerly known as the Institute of Medicine) and is co-author on the 2015 Report "Strategies to Improve Cardiac Arrest Survival: A Time To Act". She has received competitive funding from the National Institutes of Health, the American Heart Association, and several private philanthropic foundations. Her current research focuses on community, pre-hospital, and emergency department interventions to improve cardiovascular health in low income, minority, and limited English proficiency 2019 Medical Director’s Course (MDC) Faculty 2 neighborhoods in Chicago. Robert Dunne, MD, FAEMS. FACEP Robert Dunne graduated from the University of Michigan’s Inteflex program (a combined bachelor’s degree MD program). He completed emergency medicine residency training at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI where he was chief resident. He has served as EMS coordinator, associate program director and research director. He has held faculty positions at the University of Michigan and Wayne State University (WSU). He is currently the vice chair of emergency medicine and St John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit and associate professor at Wayne State University, School of Medicine. Robert is a supervisory medical officer on MI-1 Disaster Medical Assistance team, a federal medical response team. He has been deployed for many disasters from 1997 to the present, including Katrina, the World Trade Center response and many US special events including presidential inaugurations and the G8 summit. He serves on the State of Michigan Emergency Medical Services Coordinating Committee. He is past President of Michigan’s American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) chapter and current chair of the MCEP state EMS committee. He is the author of peer reviewed papers, book chapters and educational materials. He lectures extensively on EMS, preparedness, cardiac arrest and topics in trauma and emergency medicine.
