e-Vision volume ten 1 South Park: A Public Service Announcement by William Ackleson In a nation that prides itself on valuing free speech, a large number of U.S. citizens would have a quick response if I were to ask them what the most offensive and off-the-wall television show is today. The majority of the respondents would, after a second's pause, with a knowing smile on their face, say Trey Parker and Matt Stone's South Park. This seemingly tasteless show is synonymous with vulgar humor for most people. Parents cringe at the sexual depictions and children praise the generous helping of foul language, but underneath all of this cheap humor and offensive behavior, Parker and Stone convey a much more meaningful message. Each South Park episode leads viewers through a series of outrageous circumstances that culminate in an interesting and oftentimes profound conclusion. Whether Parker and Stone simply give Al Gore a little shove off of his high horse or make a bold statement about an important social issue such as whether or not we as humans should play God, they inevitably have something of consequence to say regarding a current social issue; and millions of viewers tune in every week to find out what it is. It is because of this that Stone and Parker hold influence over the beliefs of people all over the world. The episode that aired October 14th, 2009, "Butters' Bottom Bitch," follows the model fairly closely. As with most of Parker and Stone's creations, the title goes a long way in describing the episode's content.

Compiled South Park Greed Perhaps one of the things that South Park makes the most fun of is the greed element of many of its primary characters. Cartman is perhaps the worst offender, frequently becoming excited by the idea of stealing or receiving gifts. For example, in episode 4, season 9, Cartman is seen making up a story about Kenny, stating he did not want to be fed by a feeding tube in order to get Kenny’s belongings after his death. He is even seen licking his fingers. The children, while perhaps not particularly greedy, tend to be a little self- absorbed. For example, in episode 5 it is noted that the children do not play basketball for themselves, and instead do so only because of their parents and that they would rather lose their games so that the season ends earlier so they can play video games. Self-loathing While not overtly stated – many characters do not admit they hate who or what they are – but there are cases where characters look at their prior selves and discover they would have hated who they have become, or that they hate how they were. For example, in episode 2, the Marshes (the parents) reminisce how they were when they were hippies in the 70s, and how proud they were. But then they discover how much they hate hippies. The most obvious example of self-loathing occurs in episode 1, season 9, when it explores the feelings of three characters who feel as if they should be something different than how they appear.

Williams Fun With Frames: Exploring Metacommunication and Real Media Frames in South Park’s Fake News Daron B. Williams Abstract The popular cable show South Park has steadily entertained audiences since its debut in 1997. Much of the show’s humor and entertainment value comes from its satirical treatment of public figures, institutions, and timely trends. One of the institutions often lampooned on the show is that of television news broadcasting. This thesis project seeks to shed light on entertainment media portrayals of television news journalists and television news journalism as a whole by examining the issues covered, how those issues are framed, and how the journalist is used as a figure on the border of entertainment and information in one show. A content analysis was performed on all news broadcasts contained within all 181 episodes of South Park through its twelfth season. Results indicate that Semetko and Valkenburg’s (2000) five generic frames penetrate well into the entertainment realm; a broadcast’s “relationship to reality” is framed significantly differently when Conflict and Speculation frames are employed; news broadcasters are not portrayed as exemplars of the media’s “liberal bias;” and that South Park has used significantly more reality-based storylines in recent years than in its early years.
