Ballet, Aix-en-Provence Artistic direction: Angelin Preljocaj The exhibition: A typology of collaborations Scenography: Constance Guisset The CNCS wished to celebrate the 30 years of the Preljocaj Ballet with a unique exhibition imagined by Constance Guisset, offering visitors a chance to stroll through the most emblematic Exhibition curator: ballets created by the choreographer. The exhibition benefits from major audio-visual support material as in parallel to his choreographic creations, Angelin Preljocaj has produced or has collaborated with several producers on the cinematic recording of his works : Snow White in 2009, Black House with Pierre Coulibeuf in 2006, Eldorado / Preljocaj with Olivier Assayas in 2007… He also created the advertising film for Air France the Flight, which reproduced the choreography of the Park (2011). An artist who emphasizes collaboration and a wide range of perspectives in his creative process, McGregor brings his own brilliant intellect and painterly vision to life in each of his works. In FAR, we witness the mind and body as interconnected forces; distorted and sensual within the same frame. As ten stunning dancers hyperextend and crouch, rapidly moving through light and shadow to a mesmerizing score, the relationship between imagination and movement becomes each viewer’s own interpretation. An acronym for Flesh in the Age of Reason, McGregor’s FAR investigates self-understanding and exemplifies the theme from Roy Porter’s novel by the same name, “that we outlive our mortal existence most enduringly in the ideas we leave behind.” Strap in.

    Where are the female choreographers? A study on the gender imbalance among professional choreographers working in the fields of classical ballet and contemporary dance. Jessica Teague August 2016 This Dissertation is submitted to City University as part of the requirements for the award of MA Culture, Policy and Management 1 Abstract The dissertation investigates the lack of women working as professional choreographers in both the UK and the wider international dance sector. Although dance as an art form within western cultures is often perceived as ‘the art of women,’ it is predominately men who are conceptualising the works and choreographing the movement. This study focuses on understanding the phenomenon that leads female choreographers to be less likely to produce works for leading dance companies and venues than their male counterparts. The research investigates the current scope of the gender imbalance in the professional choreographic field, the reasons for the imbalance and provides theories as to why the imbalance is more pronounced in the classical ballet sector compared to the contemporary dance field. The research draws together experiences and statistical evidence from two significant branches of the artistic process; the choreographers involved in creating dance and the Gatekeepers and organisations that commission them. Key issues surrounding the problem are identified and assessed through qualitative data drawn from interviews with nine professional female choreographers. A statistical analysis of the repertoire choices of 32 leading international dance companies quantifies and compares the severity of the gender imbalance at the highest professional level. The data indicates that the scope of the phenomenon affects not only the UK but also the majority of the Western world.

The evening-length piece uses 21 dancers and alternates between several ensemble sections and intimate duets, with as many mood and costume changes. Neither linear nor literal, the movements sometimes evoke images of worship, sacrifice, purification, or bondage, and culminate with two little lambs on stage. But Preljocaj’s use of them is never dogmatic and their meanings remain elusive. Preljocaj states that he takes the word “apocalypse” for its Greek meaning, which is to “unveil,” and aims to “reveal, unveil, or highlight elements that could be present in our world but are hidden from our eyes.” Created for the France-Russia Year 2010 and originally conceived as a collaboration between Ballet Preljocaj and the Bolshoi Ballet, the dance features sets designed by Indian visual artist Subodh Gupta, costumes designed by Russian fashion designer Igor Chapurin, and music by French DJ Laurent Garnier.

    SMITH, AMY C., M.A. Deconstructing the Staged Death in 20th and 21st Century Concert Dance: A Phenomenological Investigation of Choreographic Potentiality. (2014) Directed by Dr. Larry Lavender. 62 pp. This study investigates choreographic and performance decisions and philosophies of performing death onstage in four distinct concert dance works: Michel Fokine’s The Dying Swan, Vaslav Nijinsky’s The Rite of Spring (and other recreations), Angelin Preljocaj’s Blanche Neige, and Maureen Fleming’s Nude Descending Stairs. I analyze the imagistic and symbolic representations and embodiment of death presented in all of these works through personal observations as well as research of choreographic intention and critical and scholarly reviews. My experiences with these distinct choreographies unearth five perpetuating themes related to philosophical and psychological interpretations of death’s social and physical presence: the dramatic death; becoming and transformation with a focus on a shared performance experience; the life/death/rebirth cycle; sacrifice; and gendered portrayals of death. To gain further knowledge of these themes, I created my own performance of death in a piece titled Elementary Cycles, which directly involves choreographic ideas and symbols previously explored by other choreographers. This phenomenological approach to danced death not only gives me greater bodily knowledge of the five themes but also reveals the choreographic potentialities, or future choreographic possibilities of staging a dying body, imbedded in this study

  • Angelin Preljocaj Laurent Mauvignier Adel Abdessemed
    ANGELIN PRELJOCAJ The current director of the National choreographic centre of Aix-en-Provence, Angelin Preljocaj is a central figure in French dance. After training with Karin I EN Waehner, herself a pupil of German legend Mary Wigman, he went to New York to work with Merce Cunningham, another giant of the discipline. Back in France, he moved to Montpellier to dance for Dominique Bagouet, the great French reformist, and created his first play, Marché noir (Black Market), which was then followed by forty-eight works at the crossroads between contemporary music, visual arts, and literature. He who once said “I will never be done questioning the body, movement, and human passions,” has created a body of work at once sensual and abstract, and always in touch with the world. His creations are now part of the repertoire of many prestigious institutions (among them La Scala in Milan, the New York City Ballet, and the Ballet de l’Opéra national in Paris…). In 2012, he evoked social violence and the body as victim with Laurent Mauvignier’s What I Call Oblivion. He is collaborating with Laurent Mauvignier once again for this creation in the Cour d’honneur. LAURENT MAUVIGNIER Born in 1967, Laurent Mauvignier is a graduate of the École supérieure des Beaux-Arts of Tours, his hometown. In 1999, his first novel, Loin d’eux (Far from Them), is published by the Éditions de Minuit, which will remain his publisher throughout his career. In 2011, he publishes What I Call Oblivion, a novel based on a true story, which has already served as the inspiration for a ballet by Angelin Preljocaj.
