Joseph Cassady Olin Aerospace Company Redmond, WA Abstract Pulsed plasma thrusters (PPTs) offer the combined benefits of extremely low average electric power requirements (1 to 150 W), high specific impulse (- 1000 s), and system simplicity derived from the use of an inert solid propellant. Potential applications range from orbit insertion and maintenance of small satellites to attitude control for large geostationary communications satellites. While PPTs have been used operationally on several spacecraft, there has been no new PPT technology development since the early 1970's. As a result of the rapid growth in the small satellite community and the broad range of PPT applications, NASA has initiated a development program with the objective of dramatically reducing the PPT dry mass, increasing PPT performance, and demonstrating a flight ready system by October 1997. This paper presents the results of a series of near-Earth mission studies including both primary and auxiliary propulsion and attitude control functions and reviews the status of NASA's on-going development program. Each subsequent thruster incorporated modifications that resulted in improvements in thruster performance compared to previous generations. Operational frequencies evaluated thus far include 2.45 GHz, 7.5 GHz, 8 GHz, and 14.5 GHz. As each thruster increased in operational frequency, plasmas have been ignited with successively lower amounts of input power. With higher frequency and lower power requirements, the physical sizes of the thruster and the power supply have been reduced. Decreased size results in a lighter propulsion system, which is ideal for space missions. This thesis concerns the design and development of a thruster operating at 30 GHz. Electromagnetic modeling was used in the design of the thruster to determine the optimal input antenna size and length. A 2.4-mm antenna size was chosen with a length that is flush with the bottom of the cavity.

    AAS 05-398 Gravity-Assist Trajectories to Jupiter Using Nuclear Electric Propulsion ∗ ϒ Daniel W. Parcher ∗∗ and Jon A. Sims ϒϒ This paper examines optimal low-thrust gravity-assist trajectories to Jupiter using nuclear electric propulsion. Three different Venus-Earth Gravity Assist (VEGA) types are presented and compared to other gravity-assist trajectories using combinations of Earth, Venus, and Mars. Families of solutions for a given gravity-assist combination are differentiated by the approximate transfer resonance or number of heliocentric revolutions between flybys and by the flyby types. Trajectories that minimize initial injection energy by using low resonance transfers or additional heliocentric revolutions on the first leg of the trajectory offer the most delivered mass given sufficient flight time. Trajectory families that use only Earth gravity assists offer the most delivered mass at most flight times examined, and are available frequently with little variation in performance. However, at least one of the VEGA trajectory types is among the top performers at all of the flight times considered. INTRODUCTION The use of planetary gravity assists is a proven technique to improve the performance of interplanetary trajectories as exemplified by the Voyager, Galileo, and Cassini missions. Another proven technique for enhancing the performance of space missions is the use of highly efficient electric propulsion systems. Electric propulsion can be used to increase the mass delivered to the destination and/or reduce the trip time over typical chemical propulsion systems.1,2 This technology has been demonstrated on the Deep Space 1 mission 3 − part of NASA’s New Millennium Program to validate technologies which can lower the cost and risk and enhance the performance of future missions.

The DS4G concept is able to operate at very high specific impulse, power and thrust density values well in excess of conventional 3-grid ion thrusters at the expense of a higher power-to-thrust ratio. A small low-power experimental laboratory model was designed and built under a preliminary research, development and test programme, and its performance was measured during an extensive test campaign, which proved the practical feasibility of the overall concept and demonstrated the performance predicted by analytical and simulation models. In the present paper, the basic concept of the DS4G ion thruster is presented, along with the design, operating parameters and measured performance obtained from the first and second phases of the experimental campaign.

Previous aerocapture guidance studies focused on lift modulation using reaction-control system (RCS) thrusters. This pa- per investigates the guidance law performance of drag-modulated aerocapture for a single, discrete, jettison event. Venus is selected as the target planet to observe performance in the most challenging environment. Three different guidance algorithms are studied, including a deceleration curve-fit, a pure state-predictor, and a numerical predictor-corrector utilizing both bisection and Newton-Raphson root-finding methods. The performance is assessed us- ing Monte Carlo simulation methods. The deceleration curve-fit achieves a capture rate of over 55% for a 2000km apoapsis target and 1000km tolerance.

Contour plots representing thruster performance (exhaust velocity and effi- ciency) were generated numerically as a function of the scaling parameters. The analysis revealed the benefits of underdamped current waveforms and led to an efficiency maximization criterion that requires the circuit’s natural period to be matched to the acceleration timescale. A fundamental characteristic velocity that depends on the inductance per unit length and the square root of the capacitance to the initial inductance ratio is identified. An analytical model of the discharge current predicts scaling laws in which the propulsive efficiency is proportional to the EM-PPT performance scaling number, defined here as the ratio of the exhaust velocity to the EM-PPT characteristic velocity. The importance of the effective plasma resistance in improving the propulsive performance is shown. To test the validity of the predicted scaling relations, the performance of two gas-fed pulsed plasma thruster designs (one with coaxial electrodes and the other with parallel-plate electrodes), was measured under 70 different operating conditions using an argon plasma. The measurements demonstrate that the impulse bit scales linearly with the integral of the square of the discharge current as expected for an electromagnetic accelerator. The measured performance scaling is shown to be in good agreement with the theoretically predicted scaling.
