Volunteering at HaysMed is a great opportunity for students if they are interested in healthcare as a career. Students must be 14 years of age and not be afraid to interact with family members and patients. Volunteers will visit with family members, escort HaysMed Surgical Waiting Room Volunteer 2019-20 visitors where they need to go, answer the phone in the surgical waiting room, etc. Program There is an application process and orientation. All volunteers need a TB skin test and flu shot to volunteer at the hospital; both are offered free of charge at HaysMed. The program is from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. See your counselor for details. Fort Hays State University offers a nursing guaranteed admission opportunity to qualified first-time, full-time freshman students majoring in nursing (transfer students are not eligible). If selected, the student is granted admission preference and will not have to participate in the competitive application process in the sophomore year. U.S. Service Academy Appointments are awarded on a competitive basis to qualifying students who are interested in any of the four Armed Forces Academies. The U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, and Merchant Marine Academy. This event will be limited to approx. 30 high school seniors and is specifically for students from central and north central Kansas. Tiger October 8, 2019 Tiger Takeoff Takeoff will provide students the opportunity to learn about FHSU, meet with an academic department, tour campus, as well as get vital information regarding financial aid, housing, and admissions. Night @ The Lab is an exciting new program from the KU Medical Center Area Health Education Center that was created to provide an opportunity for high school students to (a) explore the connections between health and science and (b) showcase their knowledge to the community. This program gives students the opportunity to research medical topics and create a visual display as well as an oral presentation. Together, the students will gain valuable experience in both research skills and professional presentation skills. October 9 KU Night at the Lab--OPPORTUNITY Each school participating will have one team of three students to represent their school at one of the six regional competitions across the state.

Brewster is the only Army National Guardsman in the nation to make the men’s team this year. The championship pits the four Services - Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force - against each other.
