The Statue of Clarity national if anyone in Japan really thinks of Amida Buddha as an actual god. I got my chance when a foreign minister stayed at our home for several days. This was part of an orientation program for minsters in Japan who might like to be assigned in America. It was just he and I driving together. I was at the wheel and there was a pause in the small talk so I leaned in and asked the question, “Do the Japanese think of Amida Buddha as a God.” He looked at me like I just asked a really dumb question – almost verging on an insulting one. He said absolutely not. He said Amida is wisdom itself working within our lives. Good answer, good answer. I thought to myself. It was the answer I was hoping for. Then the car grew silent again. I hoped I hadn’t been out of line. I began to think about his reaction to my question. Was it insulting? Then it hit me. How would I have felt if he had asked me – in all seriousness – if Americans think of the Statue of Liberty as a real woman, a divine being, who actually In high school, I had an English teacher who once asked welcomes and cares for visitors to the United States. I why one of the female characters in an Ernest Hemingway would have thought the question was a little insulting or short story was atypical? I was confused by the question. It even naïve. I likely would have thought that he was being seemed that a word was missing. I thought he meant to ask sarcastic. Every one knows that the Statue of Liberty is a why was she a typical heroine or a typical mother? But he beautiful and powerful symbol of what it means and how it told me that “a” in front of a word acts as a negater. So feels to be an American. “atypical” means not typical. In other words, why was she I have never confused the Statue of Liberty with a god. I not a typical Hemingway female character? have always understood that it is a personification of an It is the same with “Amida” Buddha. “Mida” is a Sanskrit ideal, a way of life, a feeling. But perhaps I could do this word for a measurement or to measure. Our word “meter” – because this statue is a national symbol rather than a a measure of distance - derives from this word. If we put an religious one. Interesting that it is so easy in one context yet “a” in front of “mida” then we have “Amida” – a word that so difficult in another. describes something that is not measureable. In our case, it I think that if I had grown up in Japan – a Buddhist is a Buddha that is not measureable - it is an Immeasurable country - then I would have naturally thought of Amida Buddha. Amida Buddha describes a reality that is Buddha the same way I think of the Statue of Liberty. I constantly manifesting enlightenment all around us. It is would have internalized Amida Buddha as the Statue of both what caused Shakyamuni to seek the path and the Clarity rather than as a person or a god. content of his realization under the Bodhi tree. I don’t think referring to Amida Buddha as the Statue of Thus, Amida is not a person and not a god but it Clarity will ever catch on but it is this kind of openness and sometimes sounds like it is to the western ear within a wordplay that will one day bear fruit allowing the teachings Christian culture. Just yesterday, a woman new to our to be accessible to anyone who is interested – without any temple said that she was sometimes confused because special training. If ever confused about Amida Buddha just what she hears often sounds a bit like Christianity. I told her whisper the Statue of Clarity to yourself and then say that this is common and I felt the same way when I first Namuamidabutsu. began attending OCBC. This seeming similarity occurs for many reasons but one of the major ones is the statue of In gassho, Amida Buddha. Rev Jon Turner We are taught that Amida Buddha is a personification of enlightenment but in the West it can seem much more like an actual real person. This is especially so whenever some one refers to Amida and his teachings. That pronoun “his” is very misleading. To a Christian ear it really does sound like a God.

Adding to the confusion, the Japanese sometimes refer to Amida Buddha as a loving father but this is not a heavenly father. They are describing a relationship rather ® than a person. Amida as father is how enlightened reality feels. When we realize that we are embraced by truth in our Buddhist Education Center everyday lives, then we feel safe and secure as does a child Information regarding the schedule of classes offered by the within the arms of its father. Buddhist Education Center can be found at : But I have always been a little suspicious of this metaphor. The image of Amida as a heavenly father is hard http://www.ocbuddhist.org/buddhist-education-center/ to shake. I have secretly always wanted to ask a Japanese

Alan Endo, OCBC President This still leaves many unanswered questions and I would like to offer my best information as this is a developing situation that continues to evolve. These are some of the common questions that have been asked with the best information to my knowledge.

1. When did the assignment start? June 5, 2017, Rev. Fujimoto was removed from his position at the Sacramento Betsuin. Rev. Umezu has had numerous meetings to try and resolve the situation, but with no positive outcomes. Due to such a complicated situation, it necessitated Rev. Harada to immediately be assigned as the “Supervising Minister”.

2. Why Rev. Harada? Wouldn’t a minister in the Northern District be better? Another minister in the district would be closer, but the delicate nature of the situation necessitated Rev. Harada to attend to the matter.

3. Does this mean that Rev. Harada might potentially have to serve at Sacramento full-time? No, this is a temporary assignment until either a Rinban or a second SAVE THE DATE! minister can be assigned to Sacramento.

Jumping into Summer No sooner have we celebrated spring and Hanamatsuri, we now head straight into summer and Obon festivities! Catch your breath and dive right in! Fortunately, we are up to the task of making this festival a great success as well. ABA need not worry about filling the chairmanship for chicken teriyaki because Mark Sollberger has again volunteered his services as CECO (Chief Executive Chef Officer). He was outstanding in that job during Hanamatsuri, lending his expertise in the fine art of chicken teriyaki roasting. Not everyone knows how to cook chicken to golden brown perfection. After 15 years as CESMC (Chief Executive Spam Musubi Czar, AKA “The Spam Lady”), Joan Tani, and ADSO (Assistant Director of Spam Operations), Gordon Tani, have handed over their responsibilities to a well- qualified and enthusiastic pair, Lynn and Glen Morita, who will surely give their all to 15 or more years of spam musubi. OCBC Junior Girl Scout Troop 855 had another Yes! (Do they know what they’ve gotten into)? Rest wonderful year of scouting! Our 5th graders were able to assured, Sangha volunteers will lend support to the Moritas attend the annual “Bridging Event” in San Francisco with as they have for the Tanis. July Korin Page 12 50th Anniversary Project Challenge!! In Memoriam

Completing the Dream In this month's 50th Anniversary Project article, we noted The Orange County Buddhist Church wishes that OCBC is now just $78,566.00 short of our fundraising to express its deepest sympathies and goal of $9.3M. This is a tremendous achievement, but we are condolences to the families of the late: not yet done. However, an anonymous and ardent Sangha member wants to insure that we will meet that final goal by our planned Hondo dedication ceremony on October 8th and John Kano has offered to match, dollar-for-dollar, all new donations OCBC receives from now to September 30th or until we reach May the family members find solace and that goal. This means if our Sangha and friends donate just $39,283.00 we will reach our ultimate goal! Let's meet our comfort in the infinite compassion of Amida generous Sangha member's challenge and get this done! Buddha
