It offers not only scenic value, but also a very challenging race course. The course features a mixture of high-desert mountains, sand-washes, and some of the most panoramic views. Racers travel through the Pahroc Summit area where they will see unbelievable rock formations and the Delamar Valley, where the ghost town of Delamar is located and gold was discovered in 1890. Then the race passes through the Cathedral Gorge, an area of eroded spires, towers and columns of tan bentonite clay. Then, on to Pioche, a city that in 1870 was considered to be one of the wildest mining camps in the West. Pit 3 is in Caliente, a town dating back to the late 1800’s! The race starts 15 miles north of Alamo, an area established in 1901 that was important for cattle ranching and still is today. From there, it continues north through Caliente, a town where in 1901, the Union Pacific Railroad and the Oregon Short Line claimed the same territory and the same set of tracks. The course also travels to the Caselton area where silver was discovered in 1868 at the Prince Mine. The entire area is rich in history, and this race provides an opportunity to go back in time and experience what it must have been like to live as a cattle rancher, a miner, or a railroad man. This is not only a great race, but also a great event for your entire family and race team. Remember, Best In The Desert is about creating memories. The Lifestyle Expo, located in the Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center, will see more than 180,000 Grand Prix fans walk through multiple times. Our annual media luncheon takes place on Thursday, April 6, and will feature drivers from many of the racing series that will be here over the weekend.     NORRA COMBINES FORCES WITH THE MINT 400 FOR VINTAGE “SHOW N’ SHINE” AT “GREAT AMERICAN OFF-ROAD RACE” -- Historic Desert Racing Machinery Part of Mint 400’s Huge Pre-Race Celebration on Las Vegas’ Iconic Fremont Street -- MARCH 13, 2013: Since the late 1960’s, the legendary Mint 400 off-road race in Las Vegas has been one of motorsports most recognized events. With early star power coming from the likes of Parnelli Jones, James Garner and Steve McQueen, the “Great American Off-Road Race” has always created a special kind of historic significance. That history will come alive on Friday, March 22 as organizers of the General Tire Mint 400 and the National Off Road Racing Association (NORRA) have joined efforts to bring a large collection of vintage off-road racing machinery to Las Vegas’ Fremont Street for a first-of-its-kind “Show N Shine.” NORRA promotes and organizes the General Tire Mexican 1000 Rally, a vintage-flavored on and off-road rally that takes place down the Baja peninsula in late April. With the list of famous off-road vehicles expected at the Mint 400’s “Show N’ Shine” growing as the display date grows closer, visitors to the race’s famed Tech and Contingency Day activities can expect to get up close to some iconic desert racing vehicles – many that competed in the Mint 400 during their heyday.     Introduction to R&C Database Compilation & Index I have a long history and fondness for Rod & Custom magazine. This is the first magazine I purchased at age 10, and I’ve been hooked ever since. I often refer back to my collection, but find it hard to quickly lay my hands on a given article. This is for fellow HAMB members who share a love for this little magazine. This Index covers Rod & Custom Magazine from May 1953 through May 1974. I stopped at 1974 since R&C went out of print then. R&C was restarted in December 1988 and lasted until October 2014. This index is created for general reference, technical reference, research, tracing automobile histories, and genealogy. I have attempted to use a consistent categorization or article grouping scheme across all 20+ years, even though editors or previous compilations may not have used this convention.     Ridgeline Off-Road Racing racks up wins he first-generation Honda Ridgeline was raced in a Stock Mini Truck class by the California Race Tand Rally team with success in 2008-10. The current racing program with Jeff Proctor’s Honda Off-Road Racing Team began in 2015, originally in Class 2 for "Limited 4-wheel, two-seat open wheel vehicles with 3.5-liter forced air induction engine, maximum 105 inch wheelbase and minimum weight of 2000 pounds.” The team and truck later moved to Class 7 for “Unlimited V6 race trucks,” where it competes very successfully in both SCORE and other off-road racing events. The Honda Ridgeline Baja Race Truck features Honda Performance Development’s 3.5-liter HR35TT V6 with the same block and cylinder heads as a production Honda Ridgeline, tweaked to 550 hp. Additional custom powertrain elements include an HPD-designed intake plenum and custom ECU programming.
