DOG WORLD September 2020 35 INTRODUCING A VERY REMARKABLE DOG ‘JACK’ HEYDEN – Lynne Heyden For anyone who has ever truly loved a dog, you will understand the depth of emotion and respect I hold for this remarkable boy. Jack was born in 2006 and died at the age of 12 in 2018. He will never be forgotten by so many people who loved him but never more than by myself. His parents were both Grand Champions and from the moment I held him as a baby I knew he had wings. Like all Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Jack was called up first with all the assessors he loved people so he took to the show ring clapping wildly. easily, taking in his stride any command I gave him and was titled early in his career. Socialising We were assigned as a Delta Team to the with humans and dogs was a joy to him – cats he Boorapool Nursing Home (Bupa) and began the cleverly respected!! best days of our life. Jack took to his visits like a duck to water. He had such wonderful empathy A career change saw us packing up our swags and with the terminally ill, gently laying his head on moving from Queensland to Geelong in Victoria. their hands or body if they wanted him to and they My husband had a 24 x 7 job and I was left to find certainly did. On the with each resident, and it was always hard to walk very first day we arrived, I picked up the local away for both them and for us. newspaper and there it was …. ‘Wanted Delta Therapy Dogs’ …. It was a sign!!!! After complying I could recount many an amusing situation but will with regulations including Police Clearance, just stick to two that were both amusing and sad vaccinations etc for Jack we attended the big at the same time. One was a beautiful lady named testing day. There were 20 dogs there, all different. On our very first visit The testing procedure was gruelling, requiring she thought her boy had come back to her!! We close depth of understanding and response from stretched out our 10 minutes to 15 – I then picked both the handler and their dog. The hardest test up Jack and made to leave. Pat went into panic of all was walking your dog past dishes of food mode, pressed the emergency button and wildly and expecting the dogs not to partake. Jack did accused me of trying to steal her baby away from hesitate at the last plate and looked up at me as I her. When the nurse arrived, I indicated to her that gave his lead a little tug, asking me the question ‘Pat’s boy needed to toilet’ and so escaped to our ‘please’, a firm ‘No’ and he continued on with his next visitor. As Pat had advanced dementia, she tail still wagging. Only 9 dogs were considered apparently forgot quickly and so we went through

36 DOG WORLD September 2020 this drama every visit for 2 years until Pat passed away. She adored him. The other case was a similar situation, which I quickly learned to deal with – a delightful Scot, called Paddy. Apparently he was a farmer and had a beautiful Border Collie called Joe who he had adored for many years. So, every week Jack became Joe and Paddy would wrap his arms around him and never let go!! Consequently, Paddy became our last visit and we would sit there with him, with Jack understanding Paddy’s need to love him – usually until Paddy would go to sleep and then I could steal my dog back and go home. Never once did Jack turn his head away from any of the 56 residents. We also visited the Geelong Hospital and were assigned to the Cancer Ward. This was a difficult assignment as Jack could ‘smell’ death and he became unusually quiet and reticent. I would pick him up to place him on the bed with a patient (as was our usual routine) and he would look at me conveying such terrible sadness that I asked to be reassigned to another ward. He really loved the kids. Some 8 months down the track a little boy with a remote-controlled fire engine chased him around the ward with the damned siren blaring and Jack resorting to hiding under beds and cupboards. Finally, Jack looked at me and said loudly ‘ENOUGH’ get me out of here. We progressed on to primary schools and ‘dog reading’ to assist young children who had confidence problems in communicating with their peers and teachers.

His job was to win the confidence of the children and listen to them read giving them a lick of encouragement and being so wonderfully patient with them. My job was to ‘read’ for Jack, ask his opinion on what ‘he’ was reading and engage the children. We had many wonderful and productive sessions with these children. Jack interacted perfectly, sometimes being completely overwhelmed with so many loving little hands, but always responding to the gentle commands I gave to him. I still have 5 Cavaliers whom I love so dearly, but have never quite made the wonderfully unique connection that I valued so dearly with Jack.
