Why Mass Matters Reflection by Saverio Grosso Be the Baptist he first two chapters of Luke's Gospel alternate between stories of two births: the Annunciation and the Birth of John the Baptist. We know how Jesus’ birth was T foretold by Isaiah, but Luke also highlights John’s role as a “new ” and forerunner of the Messiah in his narrative. In the last book of the Old Testament, the prophet speaks of the Lord’s messenger, the prophet Elijah, who will return to prepare the way of the Lord. In the verses before today’s Gospel, John’s birth is announced by the angel to Zechariah, who was performing his duties as a in the Jerusalem Temple. Zechariah and his wife, Elizabeth, are an old couple who have never had children so, much like Jesus, this conception is miraculous and this child was destined by God for an important mission – the mercy and favor of God in preparing His people for the coming of their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. While the friends of Zechariah and Elizabeth marveled at the wonderful way in which God blessed them with a child, when he was about to be named, as customary on the eighth day, they argued over what name to give him. They were confused when his mother tells them his name is to be John (since tradition would hold that he be named after his father) but Elizabeth is firm in her faith and knows this child had already been named from above! She is determined to see that God be glorified through this child since John means “God has been gracious.” They turn to Zechariah who has been unable to speak because, unlike Mary, he doubted the angel's word. When he writes on a tablet “John is his name” all are amazed, and a great fear comes upon everyone. Throughout Luke’s gospel, fear, along with joy and praise, is John the Baptist Pointed the appropriate response to God's mercy. Zechariah, now able to speak, responds with his famous canticle; the Benedictus. His prayer beautifully Jesus out to Others shows the role John is to play in salvation history. We don’t hear this in today’s reading but instead we jump to the last verses of the chapter, which explain that John will become strong in spirit living in the desert until it is time to show himself to the people of Israel. Consider being part of our While we don’t hear much about his childhood, we can assess that John the Baptist's life was fueled by one burning passion - to point Faith Formation Ministry others to Jesus Christ and to the coming of God's kingdom.
