Substantial research was undertaken by Research and Collections team at the City of Parramatta focusing on the critical contribution nurses and midwives have made in Parramatta throughout history. From the arrival of the Sisters of Charity from Ireland in January 1838 offering care and assistance to female prisoners in the Parramatta Female Factory to present day nurses and midwives working in the public Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) including Cumberland Hospital, Westmead Hospital, as well as in private medical practices. More information and stories on these local nurses and midwives can be found on our website www.arc.parracity.nsw.gov.au All content in this book is released under the Creative Commons, Share-a-Like License. We thank everyone who has helped in any way to bring about this book. 4 INTRODUCTION 2020 has been named The International Year of the Nurse and Midwife by the World Health Organisation. This year marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale – the world’s most famous visionary nurse and leader. Florence Nightingale has been described as a caring and trailblazing British nurse, statistician, social reformer and leader of improved health care who is widely regarded as the founder of modern nursing. Nurses and midwives are the cornerstone of health systems, providing skilled and compassionate care and leadership around the clock. Over 50,000 nurses and midwives work within NSW Health hospitals and health services, providing safe, quality care for the people of NSW.     New Life in Christ Risen Editorial ince the last issue of St Pat’s S Matters the parish’s normal rhythm of life has been astir with out -of-the-ordinary events. First up, was the hosting of the Inaugural Red Mass to mark the beginning of the Law Year. A truly memorable liturgy preceded a most impressive supper afterwards. We did ourselves proud. Then on March 17th there was the double header of celebrating St Patrick’s Day with a Festival, plus the unveiling of a commemorative plaque recognising the first people of the Parramatta area. Aside from these major events, the other pages are packed with many interesting articles, covering a wide range of topics. In ministry we read about the commissioning of our parish SREs and two reflections: one by Michael Hanratty on 30 years as an Acolyte here, the other a farewell by Deacon Willy Limjap as his time of service at the Cathedral draws to a close. Spennemann: Patterns of Land Use Patterns of Late Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Century Land Use by Punjabi Hawkers in Southern New South Wales, Australia Dirk HR Spennemann Institute for Land Water and Society; Charles Sturt University ________________________________________________________________ Abstract.—At the end of the nineteenth century a large number of Punjabi men went to Australia to further their family’s financial and social fortunes at home. The majority of these men went into the hawking trade, providing a crucial service to the expanding Australian farming communities. Yet, in the dominant Australian settler narrative they have been characterized, by and large, as mere ephemeral players. Drawing on in‐depth research on the presence of Punjabi men in in the Riverina of News South Wales, one of colonial Australia’s most productive wool and wheat regions, this paper demonstrates that their relationship to the land was not nearly as tenuous as some writers would have it. Rather, the picture is quite multi‐facetted, with many Punjabi owning land, either as urban bases for their operations, as investment properties until their return to India, or as land that they farmed with the intent of making Australia their new home. ________________________________________________________________ Nineteenth century Australian society was heavily gendered and socially normed, with those who did not conform being watched with suspicion and often institutionalised.1 The common narrative was one of a white settler community, alienating land and making a livelihood for themselves and their family.2 As such movement was unidirectional,3 1.     FLEET STREET HERITAGE PRECINCT An outstanding cultural funding proposal for Parramatta A concept paper for discussion and development prepared by NPRAG and advisors June 3 2020 Fleet Street Heritage Precinct Business Case – June 2020 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This proposal to restore and redevelop Parramatta's Fleet Street Heritage Precinct (FSHP) as part of a 30- hectare botanic and heritage public engagement site takes substantial 50,000-year human investment in this precinct and leverages its unique cultural authenticity into a world class cultural experience. Restoring and recycling the significant Heritage Buildings, First Nations' archaeological and living sites and, the enormous public landscape spatial scope of the Park – can be achieved for much less of the real cost of the 'Parramatta Powerhouse' project. Advancing transport system implementation across Albury Wodonga The NSW’s Government Draft Future Transport 2056 – a strategy for planning and delivering public transport within NSW and adjoining jurisdictions ticks many boxes for the twin city of Albury Wodonga and the broader Riverina Murray Region. We applaud the NSW Government’s commitment to delivering from early 2020 new passenger rolling stock for regional services.
