  • Framing of Corporate Crises in Dutch Newspaper Articles
Framing of corporate crises in Dutch newspaper articles A corpus study on crisis response strategies, quotation, and metaphorical frames T.J.A. Haak Radboud University Date of issue: 20 December 2019 Supervisor: Dr. W.G. Reijnierse Second Assessor: Dr. U. Nederstigt Program: MA International Business Communication Framing of corporate crises in Dutch media Abstract Research topic - The purpose of this study was to find answers to how corporate crises are framed in Dutch media. A journalist frames a crisis by making choices about information, quotation, and language. This thesis focusses on these aspects by analysing what crisis response strategies can be found, and how this information is reported by the journalist using quotation and metaphor. Hypotheses and research – It was expected that a company’s cultural background would influence the crisis response strategy that is reported in the newspapers. The hypotheses stated that companies originating from countries with an individualistic culture appear in newspapers more often with a diminish strategy and less often with a no response or rebuild strategy than companies originating from countries with a collectivistic culture. The denial strategy was expected to appear equally frequent. Furthermore, it was studied whether a link exists between these crisis response strategies and the occurrence of quotes and metaphors within Dutch newspaper articles. Method – These topics were studied using a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods. A corpus of Dutch newspaper articles (N = 606) covering corporate crises was analysed. Findings – No significant relation was found between the reported crisis response strategies and companies’ cultural backgrounds (individualistic or collectivistic). A relationship was found between the reported crisis response strategy and (in)direct quotation of the company in crisis.

  • JOME 007 02 02-Van Es.Indd
Journal of Muslims in Europe 7 (2018) 146-166 brill.com/jome Muslims Denouncing Violent Extremism Competing Essentialisms of Islam in Dutch Public Debate Margaretha A. van Es Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, Utrecht University, the Netherlands [email protected] Abstract This article explores statements made by Dutch Muslims against violent extrem- ism, and explains these statements in the context of the growing pressure exerted on Muslim minorities in Europe to present themselves as peaceful and loyal citizens. It problematises the often-repeated call on Muslims to denounce terrorism, and reveals that Dutch Muslims have condemned violent extremism more often than is commonly acknowledged. However, essentialist statements about Islam as a violent religion often provoke competing essentialisms of Islam as a ‘religion of peace’. In analysing such statements as ‘performative performances’, the author demonstrates how public de- bate about violent extremism feeds into Muslim perceptions of what Islam ‘really’ is. Keywords Islam – terrorism – violent extremism – securitisation – Islamophobia – media – Muslim voice – essentialism 1 Introduction Since the 9/11 attacks in 2001, Muslims in the Netherlands and elsewhere in Europe have repeatedly been urged to denounce terrorism. The pressure on Muslims increased after the Madrid train bombings and the murder of the Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh in 2004, the London tube bombings in 2005, and the Danish cartoon crisis that started in 2006. During the past few years, the emergence of the ‘Islamic State in Iraq and Syria’ (isis) together with a series of terrorist attacks in Europe have stirred new debate as to whether Muslims © Margaretha A.

Using the phenomenon of the urban ‘living room’ as its starting point, the thesis asks how this hegemonic policy doctrine, made most famous by the arrival of the Guggenheim Bilbao in 1997, has evolved into the present day, and how its fundaments have diffused into smaller peripheral cities. A historical perspective is used to trace the origins and justifications for the arrival of two self-professed urban ‘living rooms’: the LocHal public library in the city of Tilburg, the Netherlands, and the V&A design museum in Dundee, Scotland. Both of these cultural institutions opened within a few months of each other in two former textile cities united by post-industrial restructuring and serious image deficits. Despite the seemingly very different functions between a design museum and a library, the thesis is able to draw a variety of conclusions related to the concept of the ‘living room’ which unites these institutions in several shared economic, social and cultural aims.

  • Dutch Celebrities and Brabantish Identities
Paper Dutch celebrities and Brabantish identities by Aafke Lettinga©, Sandra Wagemakers© & Jos Swanenberg© (Tilburg University) [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] May 2015 This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License. To view a copy of this license, visit http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/4.0/ Dutch celebrities and Brabantish identities Aafke Lettinga, Sandra Wagemakers, Jos Swanenberg 1. Introduction This paper departs from the notion of Brabantishness, the perception of a collective regional identity in Noord-Brabant, a province in the south of the Netherlands. As a province, Noord-Brabant is geographically determined by administrative borders; inhabitants of this territory are ‘Brabanders’. Brabantish identity as a collective concept however is a much more complex phenomenon. The perception of a regional identity is a subjective social practice. Brabantishness is a sense of belonging to a group in a certain space that is considered different from other groups. The space does not need to be the actual administrative area of the province but may be a much vaguer conception of a geographical entity “where we are from”. Brabantishness is often associated with stereotypical characteristics such as hospitality, sociability, conviviality, compliance, and exuberance, and it is associated with specific cultural and linguistic features (traditions, regional dishes, accent and dialect). The inhabitants of Noord-Brabant are generally known for being ‘gezellig’ (fun, sociable), for speaking with the ‘soft G’1, and for having their own festive traditions such as carnival. Despite differences in language use and traditions throughout the province, 51% of Brabanders think ‘a real Brabander’ exists (Leerdam & Van Sloten, 2011).
