A Gr.2-winner by one of the world’s greatest sires, and with the profile boost of being a full-sister to Gr.1 winner Johannes Vermeer, she was offered to dissolve a partnership between Coolmore Stud and China Horse Club. Elliott said the three-year-old’s racing career was at an end and she would be heading to stud for an unnamed European client. He added: “She’s a Gr.2 winner at three, a full sister to a Gr.1 winner Elizabeth Browning (Lot 247), who sold for a record- at two and she’s by Galileo – what’s not to like? She was foaled by the winning Holy Roman Emperor mare Inca Princess, a daughter of Gr.2 Ribblesdale Stakes victress Miletrian, who was a half-sister to Classic-placed Mr Combustible and from the family of leading sire Shirley Heights. Trade at the opening session of this five-day sale bore similarities to that of 12 months ago, albeit the clearance rate dipped from a notable 91 per cent to 83 per cent. The opportunity to buy another 31 horses helped turnover nudge up three per cent to 6,600,900gns, the average of 26,404gns was a two per cent increase, while the median increased four per cent to 14,000gns. After two runs they switched him to Williams and a series of progressive efforts were to follow – he won off a BHA mark of 87 at Newmarket last month and was then pushed up to 95. Some bookmakers had included The Statesman in betting for Cheltenham’s Gr.1 Triumph Hurdle, but Donohoe said: “He looks like a Cup horse – he’s progressive, he stays well and has plenty of speed.” Training plans, he said, were undecided. SHALFLEET’S WINNING DUO A pair of colts from Jeremy Noseda’s Shalfleet Stables made successive six-figure sums, headed by twice successful Winning Ways (Lot 353). A winner at Salisbury and Ascot, the son of Lope De Vega made 250,000gns to a bid from Dermot Farrington, who said: “I’ve bought him in conjunction with [Australia-based agent] Chris McAnulty to race in Hong Kong. Just about every year at the yearling sales there is an unexpected buzz about an unproven stallion or two, as bloodstock agents and trainers convince themselves that this surprise package could be the next big thing. Now Lawman could hardly be described as a surprise package. After all, he had started his stallion career at Ballylinch Stud at a fee of i25,000 on the strength of his all-the-way victories in the G1 Prix du Jockey-Club and G1 Prix Jean Prat. However, he hadn=t been snapped up by one of the superpowers of European breeding and his fee had fallen to its current level of i15,000 by 2010, the year his first yearlings reached the sales ring.
