Just about every year at the yearling sales there is an unexpected buzz about an unproven stallion or two, as bloodstock agents and trainers convince themselves that this surprise package could be the next big thing. Now Lawman could hardly be described as a surprise package. After all, he had started his stallion career at Ballylinch Stud at a fee of i25,000 on the strength of his all-the-way victories in the G1 Prix du Jockey-Club and G1 Prix Jean Prat. However, he hadn=t been snapped up by one of the superpowers of European breeding and his fee had fallen to its current level of i15,000 by 2010, the year his first yearlings reached the sales ring. Having sold for up to i130,000 as weanlings, the Lawman yearlings created quite a stir in France, Ireland and England, with as many as 12 achieving six-figure prices. His top price of 300,000gns came from Shadwell, who signed for three of the top 12 Lawmans. This type of excitement about a young sire doesn=t always translate into equally impressive results on the racecourse, but this time it has. Five of Lawman=s first 2-year-olds earned black type, including Most Improved, who was beaten only half a length in the G1 Dewhurst S., and Loi, a Group 3 winner in France. Loi has proved largely disappointing this year but the same couldn=t be said of Most Improved. He lined up against the winners of the Irish and French 2,000 Guineas in the G1 St James=s Palace S. at Royal Ascot and won a rough race by 3/4 of a length from the 2000 Guineas third Hermival. One of Lawman=s daughters, Forces of Darkness, was a close third in the G1 Prix Saint-Alary. Since then, she has won the G3 Prix Minerve over 1 9/16 miles. Another daughter, Lady Wingshot, has done well around seven furlongs, notably taking the G3 Fairy Bridge S. Then there=s Mustaheel, a Shadwell purchase who won a Listed race over nine furlongs in France, and Fort Bastion, who easily defeated the future group winner Starboard in a Newmarket conditions race.
