To be in business today, our most important job is to be head marketer for the brand called You.” Tom Peters succinctly labeled and called attention to the concept of a personal brand in the August 1997 issue of Fast Company Magazine. The Beatles had that figured out well before 1997 and built a reputation, musically and personally, that stretched from Liverpool to every corner of the planet. -

KLOS Harrisongs B'day 2015
1 Three hours of GEORGE HARRISONGS – With and without the Beatles to celebrate his birth which took place this week 72 years ago. PLAYLIST Feb.22nd 2015 2 OPEN/9am George Harrison – Apple Scruffs - All Things Must Pass ‘70 This was a salute to the girls (and sometimes boys) who stood vigil at Apple, Abbey Road and anyplace a Fab was to likely to be. Upon recording the tune, George invited the “Apple Scruffs,” into the studio to have a listen. The Beatles - I Want To Tell You - Revolver (Harrison) Lead vocal: George The backing track was recorded in five takes on June 2, 1966. George Harrison's third song on “Revolver,” was, he later said, "about the avalanche of thoughts that are so hard to write down or say or transmit." Once again Harrison had no idea what to call his composition. The band briefly kicked around random ideas, and the song was recorded under the working title “Laxton's Superb,” a type of apple. It later became known as “I Don't Know,” which was George’s answer when producer George Martin asked whether Harrison had come up with a title. By the day of the final mix (June 6, 1966), Harrison had settled on the title “I Want To Tell You.” Contains the first bass overdub on a Beatles record. Paul had his bass recorded on a different track really allowed for more options when it came time to mix the song. On U.S. album: Revolver - Capitol LP 3 The Beatles - Blue Jay Way - Magical Mystery Tour (EP) (Harrison) Lead vocal: George Written by George Harrison on August 1, 1967 while vacationing in a rented house in the Hollywood Hills above Los Angeles. -

1 95.5 KLOS PLAYLIST DEC. 2ND 1 2 9AM THREE HOURS OF GEORGE HARRISONGS George Harrison – Isn’t It A Pity (version one) - All Things Must Pass ‘70 Simple, effective, majestic – this track is one of the most magnificent tunes of George’s solo career. First composed during the “Let It Be” sessions, it was recorded on June 2nd, 1970. Some considered this to be a parody of “Hey Jude,” with it’s length and similar sounding backing chorus – but the song is anything but a parody – but another piece of firm evidence of George’s power as a master songwriter. 9.10 BREAK 2 3 The Beatles - Blue Jay Way - Magical Mystery Tour (EP) (Harrison) Lead vocal: George Written by George Harrison on August 1, 1967 while vacationing in a rented house in the Hollywood Hills above Los Angeles. The story is essentially the same as the lyrics imply. On a foggy night in L.A., George sat at his rented house waiting for friends to arrive, but the maze of thin and winding streets and the thick fog rolling in got the best of them and they became lost. George: “I’d rented a house in Los Angeles on – Blue Jay Way, and I’d arrived there from England. I was waiting around for Derek and Joan Taylor who were then living in L.A. I was very tired after the flight and the time change and I stared writing, playing a little electric organ that was in the house. It had gotten foggy and they couldn’t find the house for some time. -

32 The Role of The Beatles in Popularizing Indian Music and Culture in the West Rodrigo Guerrero Faculty Advisors: Dr. Charles Brewer, Dr. Sarah Eyerly, and Dr. Douglass Seaton College of Music Abstract: The Beatles were responsible for several long-lasting innovations that shaped the history of pop music and Western culture in general. As a British rock band that dominated the popular music scene during the 1960s, they made one of their most significant, yet sometimes overlooked, contributions through the incorporation of elements from Indian culture in their music and lyrics. This essay discusses the role that the Beatles played in introducing and popularizing certain features of Indian culture, and specifically Indian music, in the Western hemisphere. I first describe their relationship with Indian culture. In this section, I bring forth questions, such as why they became interested in this culture, why they decided to go on a spiritual retreat to India, and how the trip influenced their thoughts about foreign culture. After that, this essay analyzes the influence of Indian culture and Indian music on the Beatles’ lyrics and music, respectively. Finally, I will illuminate the lasting effect that this cross- fertilization had in subsequent years. he 1960s was a decade of experimentation in popular music. The Beatles, the British rock band that dominated the popular music scene Tduring this decade, was responsible for long-lasting innovations that would shape the history and style of pop music and Western culture. One of their most significant, yet overlooked, contributions to Western culture was the incorporation of Indian musical elements into their songs. -
The Beatles and the Counterculture
TCNJ JOURNAL OF STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP VOLUME XII APRIL, 2010 THE BEATLES AND THE COUNTERCULTURE Author: Jessica Corry Faculty Sponsor: David Venturo, Department of English ABSTRACT Throughout the 1960s, the Beatles exerted enormous influence not only as a critically acclaimed and commercially successful band, but also in the realm of social and cultural change. A number of factors facilitated the Beatles‟ rise to success, including the model of 1950s rock „n‟ roll culture, their Liverpudlian roots, and a collective synergy as well as a unique ability to adapt and evolve with their era. As both agents and models of change, the Beatles played a key role in establishing three main attributes of the embryonic counterculture: the maturing sensibility of rock music, greater personal freedom as expressed by physical appearance, and experimentation with drugs. United by the goal of redefining social norms, activists, protestors, hippies, and proponents of the growing counterculture found in the Beatles an ideal representation of the sentiments of the times. Embodying the very principle of change itself, the Beatles became a major symbol of cultural transformation and the veritable leaders of the 1960s youth movement. “All you need is love, love, love is all you need” (Lennon-McCartney). Broadcast live on the international television special, “Our World,” the Beatles performed “All You Need is Love” for an unprecedented audience of hundreds of millions around the world. As confetti and balloons rained down from the studio ceiling, the Beatles, dressed in psychedelic attire and surrounded by the eccentric members of Britain‟s pop aristocracy, visually and musically embodied the communal message of the 1967 Summer of Love. -
Apple Label Discography
Apple Label Discography 100-800 series (Capitol numbering series) Apple Records was formed by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr in 1968. The Apple label was intended as a vehicle for the Beatles, their individual recordings and the talent they discovered. A great deal of what appeared on Apple was pretty self indulgent and experimental but they did discover a few good singers and groups. James Taylor recorded his first album on the label. Doris Troy recorded a good soul album and there are 2 albums by John Lewis and the Modern Jazz Quartet. The Beatlesque group Badfinger also issued several albums on the label, the best of which was “Straight Up”. Apple Records fell apart in management chaos in 1974 and 1975 and a bitter split between the Beatles over the management of the company. Once the lawyers got involved everybody was suing everybody else over the collapse. The parody of the Beatles rise and the disintegration of Apple is captured hilariously in the satire “All You Need Is Cash: the story of the Rutles”. The Apple label on side 1 is black with a picture of a green apple on it, black printing. The label on side 2 is a picture of ½ an apple. From November 1968 until early 1970 at the bottom of the label was “MFD. BY CAPITOL RECORDS, INC. A SUBSIDIARY OF CAPITOL INDUSTRIES INC. USA”. From Early 1970 to late 1974, at the bottom of the label is “MFD. BY APPLE RECORDS” From late 1974 through 1975, there was a notation under the “MFD. -
