10 THINGS TO WATCH IN STUTTGART

1) Grass is Back: The first grass-court events of the ATP World Tour season take place in Stuttgart and ’s-Hertogenbosch this week. At the MercedesCup, Roger Federer returns for his first match since 24 March 2018, when he lost a third-set tiebreaker to No. 175 in Miami.

2) Who’s No. 1?: won his 11th Roland Garros title to remain No. 1 in the ATP Rankings this week. Federer, who is 100 points behind Nadal, would pass him on 18 June by reaching his first Stuttgart final. The Swiss is 2-2 at the MercedesCup, including a loss to No. 302 in his opening match last year.

3) Goat on Grass: Despite his .500-record at the MercedesCup, Federer is 164-24 lifetime on grass with the surface’s best win percentage in the Open Era (.872). After losing to Haas, Federer swept 30 sets en route to his ninth Halle and eighth Wimbledon titles. He already holds the Open Era- record with 36 straight sets won on grass in 2003-04, which he could surpass in the Stuttgart final.

4) Flair for Drama: Lucas Pouille has saved match point en route to three of his five titles, including 2017 Stuttgart, winning a reflex-volley exchange with Jan-Lennard Struff to fight off match point in his opener. Pouille was the only player on tour to win titles on grass, clay and hard courts in 2017.

5) Wild One: Former World No. 4 Tomas Berdych is among the wild cards this week. Berdych beat both Federer and on the lawns of Wimbledon in 2010 before falling to Nadal in his first Grand Slam final. He won his lone grass-court title in a Federer-less draw at Halle in 2007.

6) Tennis Elbow: Nick Kyrgios is scheduled to play the fifth singles tournament of his 2018 season, which has been marred by a right elbow injury. Though his last singles match was on 13 April in Houston, Kyrgios captured his first ATP doubles title on 26 May in Lyon with .

7) No Place Like Home: Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany has earned 30+ wins and enjoyed Top 50 finishes in each of the last 11 seasons. The key to Kohlschreiber’s success has come at home. The two-time Stuttgart finalist is 120-62 in Germany (.659) and 318-274 elsewhere on tour (.537).

8) Canadian Duo: Milos Raonic was the No. 1 Canadian from 11 October 2010 through 20 May 2018 before 19-year-old Denis Shapovalov jumped him in the ATP Rankings. The countrymen clashed for the first time on 10 May in Madrid, with Shapovalov getting the best of Raonic 6-4, 6-4.

9) History Maker: Feliciano Lopez returns after falling to Pouille in last year’s final. The Spaniard is on pace to pass Federer and set an all-time record when he appears in his 66th straight Grand Slam main draw at Wimbledon. Lopez’ only win over Federer came 20 years ago in the juniors.

10) Studs in Dubs: Pouille, Kyrgios and Shapovalov are among the singles stars signed up for doubles. Also in the draw are Struff and Ben McLachlan, who are 11-5 in their first season as a team. The German and Japanese reached semi-finals at the Australian Open, Miami and . MercedesCup Day 1 – Monday, June 11, 2018 Page 2 of 6 www.ATPWorldTour.com
