New discoveries in New World Atissini as revealed in revision of Pelignellus Sturtevant & Wheeler (Diptera: Ephydridae) Tadeusz Zatwarnicki1 & Wayne N. E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Pelignellus is resurrected from synonymy with Atissa and is revised. The genus and both included species—P. subnudus Sturtevant & Wheeler from the USA (California) and P. freidbergi n. sp. from Central America (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Panama)—are described with an emphasis on structures of the male terminalia, which are fully illustrated. The species are keyed and their distribution data are provided. For perspective and to facilitate recognition of genera and species, the tribe Atissini is diagnosed and a key to genera is provided. KEYWORDS: Ephydridae, Atissini, Pelignellus, shore flies, New World, Central America, identification key, new species. RESUMEN Pelignellus es recuperado de la sinonimia con Atissa y se revisa. El género y sus dos especies, P. subnudus Sturtevant & Wheeler de los Estados Unidos (California) y P. freidbergi n. sp. de América Central (Costa Rica, El Salvador y Panamá), se describen con un énfasis en las estructuras de los genitales masculinos, que están completamente ilustradas. Las especies se distinguen en la clave de iden tificación y se proporcionan sus datos de distribución. -

Arthropod fauna of the UAE, 6: 636–761 (2017) Order Diptera, family Ephydridae A conspectus on shore-flies from the United Arab Emirates Wayne N. Mathis, Tadeusz Zatwarnicki, Jens-Hermann Stuke & John C. Deeming INTRODUCTION Among families of acalyptrate Diptera, the Ephydridae demonstrate exceptional diversity, with nearly 1900 species worldwide (Mathis & Zatwarnicki, 1995). The family, more commonly known as shore or brine flies, also exhibits considerable adaptive evolution, prompting Oldroyd (1964: 188–189), a noted British dipterist, to write that the Ephydridae are “...nothing if not versatile...” and that this family of flies is “...in the full flower of its evolution, and as such they offer attractive material for study.” We concur with Oldroyd and submit this conspectus to document the family's richness and evolutionary diversity in the United Arab Emirates. We hasten to add, however, that numerous taxa remain to be collected and/or described. The diversity exhibited by shore-flies includes more than species richness, as Oldroyd alluded. Although most shore-fly species are aquatic or semi-aquatic as immatures, feeding as browsers or filter feeders, the larvae of others are terrestrial, feeding as leaf miners, parasitoids in spider eggs, predators in clusters of frog eggs, or being saprophagous on carrion, feces, and stranded snails. Many species have adapted to such inhospitable environments as sulphurous hot springs, highly alkaline or saline lakes, and, perhaps most notably, to exposed pools of crude petroleum (Foote, 1995). With a few notable exceptions, however, the family's natural history, the immature stages in particular, largely awaits discovery and documentation. Thus, an objective of this conspectus is to encourage further research on all aspects of the rich and versatile natural history of this family. -

From 61 collected species, 27 (Clanoneurum cimiciforme (Haliday, 1855), Psilopa aequalipes (Becker, 1907), P. leucostoma (Meigen, 1830), P. nana Loew, 1860, P. pulicaria (Haliday, 1839), Atissa hepaticoloris Becker, 1903, Hydrellia albifrons (Fallén, 1813), H. albilabris (Meigen, 1830), H. maura Meigen, 1838, H. subalbiceps Collin, 1966, Athyroglossa nudiu- scula Loew, 1873, A. ordinata Loew, 1873, Ditrichophora calceata (Meigen, 1830), Gymnoclasiopa aulisioi (Canzoneri, 1977), G. insolita (Canzon- eri & Meneghini, 1977), Hecamedoides unispinosus (Collin, 1943), Hyadina guttata (Fallén, 1813), Ilythea spilota (Curtis, 1832), Philygria fl avipes (Fallén, 1823), P. stictica (Meigen, 1830), Parydroptera discomyzina Collin, 1913, Pelina nitens Loew, 1873, Brachydeutera ibari Ninomyia, 1929, Philotelma parvum (Kramer, 1917), Scatophila caviceps (Stenhammar, 1844), S. signata (Loew, 1860) and S. unicornis Czerny, 1900) are new for the island. Psilopa aequalipes (Becker, 1907), P. nana Loew, 1860, Hecamedoides unispinosus (Collin, 1943), Brachydeutera ibari Ninomyia, 1929 and Philotelma parvum (Kramer, 1917) are new for Italy.
